I was at Philmont Scout Ranch in the NM mountains in '64. Back when the cast aluminum Dutch Oven was considered the ultimate in lightweight camp gear. We had this industrial powdered soap called Tetrox. We made a paste of it with water and doped the bottom of mess kits when cooking over open fire. You didn't wanna get any inside, or everybody eating from that pot would get the ''Tetrox Trots.'' I guess bar soap would work too.

The Vietnam vs China war directly led the Chinese to start realizing that the SKS Type 56 was not quite up to snuff when the Vietnamese were general issued the AK series rifle. This led to not only some interesting firearms based on the SKS with removable magazines but more AK Type 56 being issued and the development of the Type 81 to replace both the Type 56 Rifle and Type 56 Carbine (I think the SKS was referred to as the rifle and the AK was the carbine) as well as the Type 63, among others that had been developed in small production runs.

Interesting. I saw a video of the modern PLA mess kit and it's pretty neat too. My guess is that the Red Chinese kit [prior to getting the stove bottom attachment] was based on the WWII Imperial Japanese Army's Han Gou, [rice cooker]. That kit was copied from the German M31 Kochgesshir, but deleted the handle on the top pan, and had shallower pans. Officer's kits were rectangular, [like the French one on your wall], while the rank and file had kidney-shaped kits. I don't own one but I've seen videos.
@scottysurvival4 ай бұрын
@@HootOwl513 I've seen the PLA kits your talking about. Those seem to pretty nice made out of stainless steel. I'm going to have to look up that Japanese kit though. That's interesting. @HootOwl5134 ай бұрын
@@scottysurvival Oh, OK. I thought that was the French pre-War mess tin. It was not unlike the German M31 but rectangular, not kidney shaped. After France fell, Germans issued some to their troops, before retooling for Wehrmacht gear. Must be distortion from a laptop screen. I do have that Czech Officers' kit, with a cutting board and KP utensils on the top, and three nesting Pots/Frypans, like a Russian Doll. I've been busy since I got it and haven't played with it yet. Looks about right for car camping with a Coleman 425 stove on the tailgate. There's also a French officers mess set [sold by Sportsmans' Guide as Italian] that has a giant two gallon oval bucket, lid, roaster pan with side handles, two half-span D-shaped cake pans, and another pan. One Christmas Eve, I made a Cioppino [fish stew] with vegetables, tomatos, diced potato, halibut, shrimp, clams, mussels and lobster. It was grand.

That Mess Kit is a new one to me. Am looking forward to a field test please. The Wax Block? Best ask the the Sender. Size? Take away the bottom Burner Section and the two Mess Kits look to be pretty similar in size. Fuel? Alcohol-based Gel or Liquid Fuel. I live in Switzerland and would in my case, just use a small metal container as the burner (the bottom of a soda pop or energy drink can works fine). Filled with Alcohol Gel Fuel ('Sicherheitsbrennpaste' / Safety Burning Paste) and popped into that receptacle in the stove section, it will provide enough heat to boil water or cook just about anything one wishes. The brand available in Switzerland is extremely clean-burning .. being the Swiss go-to for their indoor dining table cheese fondue evenings (during Winter, a Swiss National Sport 😏). Liquid Alcohol-based fuel works just as well. Fill the burner with Ceramic / Glass Wool to reduce the risk of burning fuel spillage and Bob's your Uncle. A strip of tightly-rolled Carbon Cloth stuffed into the burner works just as well. Something else .. Aluminium, Food and a High Heat don't make for good Companions. Solution .. control the Heat and Stir, Stir, Stir 😁. Thanks for sharing .. take care ..

I think the size difference is mostly because Western armies rely on compact, freeze dried foods that just require adding water and warming up. The Chinese army at that time still relied on rice with fresh vegetables added that required cooking. The wax block may have nothing to do with the mess kit.
