I worked on the F-18D while in the Marines. Went to Kuwait in 1999 to enforce a no-fly no occupation zone. Our MO (Maintenance Officer) showed us (probably classified) footage of a mission destroying a SAM site and evasion of a SAM missile. So in my opinion the F-18 platform is a VERY good 4th generation plus /LOW 5th generation support aircraft. I loved the F18D but I know her time has passed....... God Bless America

An f18 with a big increase in speed and a bleeding edge radar would make it a monster.
@Max_Da_G
@Max_Da_G 13 күн бұрын
You'd need to give it new variable intakes which would need to be integrated into FCS and FADEC. Bigger issue is the wing: its sweep angle and profile are optimized for speeds it currently flies at. It's an optimized aircraft, so increasing top speed would make you need to basically redesign the whole thing.

They missed 2 things in my opinion: 1. Conformal fuel tanks. They were spec'd but not added. 2. The new GE414-400HE engine that has 20% more thrust and 20% more range. I am pretty sure that other nations like Canada were going to choose the F-18 over the F-35, so the US dropped those 2 features to get them to invest in the F-35.

The fact that both China and Russia have developed and likely further improving their A-A missile s such that they greatly outrage ours is VERY concerning. China s recent unveiling of its newest 5th Gen make the risk of an asymmetric threat advantage even more worrisome. Keep in mind that one hit by ship killer onto a carrier deck takes that ship out of the war for a year. Sinking is not necessary As I view it ,we need to field a fighter with operational range to 1000 miles, stealthy, and with A-A weapons that can range out 200 to 400 miles more. If the Chinese lose 50 aircraft in taking out 1 carrier, it's a net win for the Chinese. I fear we are behind, and that gap is increasing. China wants a war, but NOT until it is sure it can win. Nuclear is a total loss for China.

F/A-18 Hornet & Super Hornet got an extended lease on life, NOT because they were "so good," but due to cost-cutting: 1) Aging out of A-6's 2) The cancellation of the A-12 due to mismanagement and Clinton Admin military downsizing 3) F-35 cost of $102M per vs $66M per Super Hornet.

Let's just say my numbers _"are all wrong,"_ as you stipulate - ARE THE PER UNIT AND OPERATING COSTS OF THE F-35 HIGHER THAN THE SUPER HORNET?? 'Cuz that's my point. Super Hornet costs per SlashGear were $55.7M in 2020, but since they made only 17 (not 20) the Wiki cost of $66M figure makes sense. Something like $28M for each "classic" F/A-18 built in MUCH bigger numbers. F-35 cost cited was in 2023 per Defense One and Breaking Defense (I couldn't make it thru the 99 page Wiki entry). Operating costs per hour were much higher for the F-35C too.

as an aussie have seen how reliable the 18 has been and seen the growler supersede the F111C in certain roles. not happy with the failings in the F35 though as the wide sales provides massive security risks. That is false. The F-35As now costs around 60-70 Million USD per unit, while also meeting every capabilities that is required (an incredible datalink, good range, great kinematic performance, incredible RADAR, incredible sensor fusion, and so many others.) The F-22 is the only fighter to not be exported due to national security risk, but otherwise in a modern day competition, it is behind the F-35.

What are you talking about? Neither Russia nor China have a stealth fighter jet. The F/A-18 Super Hornet is superior to Russia's and China's best fighter jets in many ways. Neither Russia nor China can track an F-22 or F-35 on radar. They cannot see them. Their supposed "stealth" jets can be easily tracked up to 200 miles away by US radar. Russia and Chinese radar can't pick up the Super Hornet on radar until it is within 75 miles. A hamburger in any package is still a hamburger. Russian pilots get a fraction of the flight time of US pilots. Plus the SU-34/35 tech is old, not upgraded like the block 3 Hornet or the F-15EX...Even the F-22 tech, altho old, is light years further along than other Russia or China. The F-35 is Cat5+....
@M16_Akula-III
@M16_Akula-III 11 күн бұрын
@@OldGlaseye-gf7si This is incorrect. Su-35S has relatively new electronics, the F-22 in-fact, is the most outdated out of any modern U.S Fighter, being the only one without HMD, no EOTS in-so requiring 2 EOTS pod, limited upgradability, very limited DATALINK. Its advantages are kinematic performance and a great radar, but it stops right there. On the other hand, China has severely caught up, and have implemented a lot of technologies into their jets. The newer J-16s are now on-par with the F-15EX.

Canada finally an attack helicopter. Griffon will have 50 cal (12.7 mm) machine gun , 7.62 mm self-defence machine gun, with the CH-148 capable of firing Air and ship-launched lightweight torpedo. Canada should keep their fleet of F-18A/B and with the F-35sA in the future, Canada needs at least one medium size carrier. F-18s speed mach 1.8 and range is perfect a big country like Canada. F-35 mach 1.1 doesnt match the speed of the F-18.

Wednesday, November 06, 2024 . . . I propose a "Nth Generation Air Dominance(NGAD)"; the technology exists today or should commence development of a Fighter vehicle(tier-one) with the capability of launching from ground level, say an Airport, and continuing into Space(i.e., ELO). This would be a three-tier development package where whereby a second-level space Drone(tier-two) is also capable of terrestrial takeoff and space-penetration capability; its purpose would be refueling and weaponizing tier-one; it would also, of course, be capable of defending itself into space-penetration with assist from terrestrial fighter escorts into space-penetration. The "third tier" would likely be a larger vehicle that would service both (tier-one and tier-two) while also providing defensive support for itself and the two subordinate tiers; any additional refinements to this initial configuration would be entirely discretionary.

@@MichaelRoberts-t7c This is the biggest misstake the US made. Same with the F-16. Instead of building new gen 5 fighters they upgrade the old ones. Your comment is interesting but your missing out regarding the logistics support for any weapon system. You need spares to support equipment in the field and that's not cheap. Many are upset with Foreign Military Sales (FMS) but wars can be controlled by with holding spare parts. New aircraft designs are taking too long to field now, the F-35 contract was awarded in 1997 and it is still not fully functional. Not only is new designs expensive but the support, repair manuals, tooling, test equipment, etc., and spares all need to be in the yearly budget. @@Neo-xn7vc

@@Neo-xn7vc the reason many aircraft in the US inventory are upgraded vs replaced with the latest shiny fighter many times is cost. The new aircraft will cost more, development for starters, the cost of training, aircraft spares for support, the additional requirement for support equipment to work on the aircraft and the components, factor in the cost of publications to detail the repair concept for a three level maintenance currently in place (Organizational, Intermediate and Depot). All this is in place now on older aircraft so upgrades make more sense.

@@BlufalconGaming Well Americans were laughing at the fact that the Russian jet was rough and ready much like in combat American jets would be all shiny. I never said anything about what that pilot did and combat you did. I said outgunned because the Russian planes are like a mule and the American planes are like a donkey/ass. American planes are too expensive and too complicated. Russian planes are built to be repaired anywhere. That is why Russia is winning in Ukraine because they know what they are doing.
