@@mistertofu The Bohemiean Rhapsody arrangement was written by the Tuba player closest to the camera, Lsgt Ian Shepard. He also composed the new march for this year's (2019) QBP, Twice the Man!

The centre trombone player seems to act as drum mayor. This actually is not that strange. For instance, when the massed bands ar on parade, the drum majors start to counter march and when the drum major has passed the centre trombone player he raises his instrument to signal to the bands that they have to counter march.

Not the belittle the job of drum major, but with a well rehearsed routine it seems he's just there for show ;-). The DoM was there, conducting Bohemian Rhapsody.

From what I was aware, there was no Drum major available to lead the band, so the bands Trombonist took the lead. The Band is actually conducted by the Assistant Bandmaster, of the band who has now moved onto the RAC Band.

@@charlesmallo I guess in a way the drum majors are there just to add a nice touch and make the band member's job easier too. But a band can for sure function without a drum major.

Haha yeah, from my past band experience, we usually use special suspended cymbal mallets to make that whooshing sound on the cymbals.

When performing on stage that is indeed better. But when marching I can imagine you don't want to fumble around with another pair of mallets.
