CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Chris (River Phoenix) confides in Gordie (Wil Wheaton) about a teacher who betrayed his trust.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the Stephen King short story The Body, Rob Reiner's easygoing nostalgia piece is set in Castle Rock, OR, over Labor Day weekend, 1959. A quartet of boys, inseparable friends all, set out in search of a dead body that one of the boys overhears his brother talking about. The foursome consists of intellectual Gordie (Wil Wheaton), born leader Chris (River Phoenix), emotionally disturbed Teddy (Corey Feldman), and chubby hanger-on Vern (Jerry O'Connell). The boys' adventures en route to the elusive body are colored by the personal pressures brought to bear on all of them by the adult world. Richard Dreyfuss, playing the grown-up Gordie, narrates the film, while Kiefer Sutherland dominates every scene he's in as a brutish high-school bully.
CREDITS:
TM & © Sony (1986)
Cast: River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton
Director: Rob Reiner
Producers: Bruce A. Evans, Raynold Gideon, Andrew Scheinman
Screenwriters: Raynold Gideon, Bruce A. Evans, Stephen King

I think Stand By Me is the greatest depiction of adolescent friendship ever put on film, such a deep emotional story, this scene especially to see him break down too about wanting to be forgiven and admitting his wrongdoings and sincerely wishing for a new reputation. Such a powerful scene, much respect to the actors, Rob Reiner and Stephen King, they don't make honest movies like this anymore and they should

This clip itself shows how much potential River Phoenix had to be starred in several other great films. The sad tragic thing about River that is unbearable is that he was one of a kind, even his name itself 'River Phoenix', nobody would forget him, he even stood out from his family, he was just that special. The style, the charisma, the authentic look, the edge, the multi-talent & direction he had made me see that he was one heck of a gift to this world. He paved the way for people like Keanu Reeves, Leonardo DiCaprio etc. Although we never got the chance to see him star in Box Office phenomenons, I know if he stayed he would have been the all-time best because he was getting better with each film, he topped it up. To compare this performance with his performance in 'The Thing Called Love' differenciates each other in such a way that you know the man can adjust to any portrayal given. He has inspired me to be my own person, I thank him for that. If there was any role-model I'd be proud to have at the age of 20. It would be River Phoenix & this goes on to be remembered. R.I.P, may environmentalism be enhanced the way you would have wanted it.

This gives me chills and brings me to tears every single time. The enormous feeling of frustration that we can see in Chris is just so... Familiar, you know? Verne was definitely the more sheltered and naive of the 4 , teddy and Chris coming from abusive households and Gordy coming from a broken family , Verns home life isn’t mentioned in the film though briefly in the beginning with his mom cleaning his room implying he’s probably got loving parents who care for him to borderline coddling him which explains his innocence and naivety.

Apparently the director said to River to think about what ever hurt him so bad that the tears would come out. So he thought about and went to shoot it and it brought genuine emotion. River never told the director what it was about but he didn't care and immediately embraced him like a father hugging their son.

Joe Whitehead That's a really good question. If he was still alive, in my opinion I would say probably not. Usually when a person is hurt to that extremity, I don't think anyone would want to talk about it ever again. An example was Malcolm Young (former guitarist of AC/DC). There was one gig they did that resulted in 3 fans being trampled to death and when he found out what happened was so devastated and heartbroken that even before he was diagnosed with dementia years later wouldn't talk about it.

I remember how unbelievably real that scene was. I’d never EVER seen a kid show that much raw emotion in a scene. We later learn that those were real tears, that Reiner had somehow tapped into the emotion required for the scene...Wil Wheaton later talked about that scene, how even he was shocked by the change that came over him when they filmed that wonderful take. Reiner said that afterward, he had to comfort River, because he couldn’t shake the emotion. Heart warming. River was an old soul for sure. So sad that he died so young. We were the same age.

i am 20 year old boy that had never been so moved by a movie before. This movie makes you cherish your childhood memories and friends so much. i wish i was brought up in the 50s/60s where having fun outside seemed to be so much funner. nowadays you cant seem to do anything as child without there being some sort of law objecting against it. When I found out that he died so tragically, I felt so sad that I wanted to cry, i think it’s hard to explain how can you feel something for someone you didn’t ever met, like I wasn’t ever born when he died. I think that shows how impactful his legacy is. He was a great human being and a great actor. I'm reading Last Night at the Viper Room, and apparently in this scene River wasn't emoting enough. The director pulled him aside and asked him to think about a time a grown up really let him down, and keep thinking about it thru the scene. That was the take that made the cut. And the director cries everytime he watches it. And now I do too.

To be honest, I actually find myself a lot more personally affected by River's acting than James Dean's- but then part of that I think is just that the acting style that was popular back in the day was different. I almost always find, watching films from the 40s and 50s, that the acting, even if excellent for what it is, feels a little overstated for my taste. But River, man... he was so completely authentic and natural that you watch scenes like this and almost feel guilty because it feels like you're intruding on someone's real, vulnerable, intimate moment! That's such a rare level of talent.

they say he used real sad feelings were from an experience in life were a teacher/adult let him down., this happened to my best friend growing up in about 1996 we were in the same class together he was known as a trouble maker in our class just like chriss chambers in the movie, one day the teacher took him out in the bag room it was later we found out that the teacher beat him, NO one believed him and he cried just like river does in the scene, me and my mum were the only ones, I havnt scene him in a long time but he is a 1 in a million friend hes a mate brother that would take a bullet for you, theres not many selfless people like that in this world anymore

This scene was the one that I always had to fast forward when I watched the movie when I was younger. It was just too relatable and painful. Rob Reiner got Phoenix to go to a place - as an actor - that had never been approached by anyone of that age, before or since. It is extraordinary. The world missed out on a developing, amazing talent. There were/are child actors... and then there was River Phoenix.

This beautiful and amazing talent was taken from us way too soon, way too soon. RIP River Phoenix, as you gave us so many magnificent and mesmerizing performances, preternaturally gifted, versatile and precocious as you were, as entertaining as you were endearing, and as compelling as you were compassionate. For the likes of you come around once every 30 years or so (some considered you the rightful heir to James Dean), golden hued, noble and otherworldly as your acting gifts were. Astonishing, yet tragic, as the cruel dictates of fate intervened before you had a chance to really blossom, and fully showcase your magic, your cool charisma, searing intensity and unbelievable talents, captivating as the whole package was, and as surreal and spellbinding as it could have turned out to be (becoming more poignant and endearing with each passing year). RIP River Phoenix, your sublime, powerful and gorgeous legacy lives on, and always will. Forever!

It's so weird revisiting this movie at different points in your life. When I was 14 and watched this I had a crush on River. Now I'm 31 and even though I never want to have kids I feel this maternal instinct watching these characters now and I just want to protect these children from everything that has hurt them. God they are just so little and vulnerable. =( I want to keep them safe. Unfortunately I can't.
