A film by Steven Green in partnership with Prime & Fire Selects, Talenthouse and BFI Future Film.
Using recently rediscovered archive footage and photographs, On and On follows cyclists Roger Pratt, Les West and Rhymney Breweries as they describe their road cycling experiences and rise to success in the sport.
In the sixties, when road cycling in the UK was often referred to as a ‘Cinderella’ sport, the three men talk us through their experience of one of the country’s biggest bike races, ‘The Tour of Britain Milk Race’. The Milk Race consists of a 1,500 mile cycle through the roads of Britain, amounting to 110 miles per day with no rest day.
Along with the physical pressure of cycling through some of Britain's most strenuous routes the men also had to manage the mental pressure of conquering their international competitors while living up to the high expectations of their fans.
The stories of these men are truly commendable. They were the athletes who trained hard at every opportunity, competed at weekends then went back to work on Monday morning like nothing had happened. 50 years on these men are still cycling and enjoying the mainstream success of the sport they love.
