I recently found your channel. I am a retired milk tester in northern NY state of 21 years. I retired 4 years ago. My area consisted of mostly family run,100 cow average size herds when I started. Sadly over the years they began to disappear and larger 1000+ herds took over. My favorite farms were the Mennonite families of about 70-90 cows. I miss visiting with the farmers but, watched families grow and children carry on, or go on their separate ways. I have been through tough times along side them; barn fires, deaths, serious accidents. Also, renovations and upgrades, expansions, etc. I was one of the first to use the 'new meters' in the northeast. We all know farmers have it tough financially and many have considered quitting testing to cut corners. I had one that did quit and the next month called me to say he didn't know what he had been thinking. He needed the information DHIA provided to make decisions. I considered that a complement. I loved my job, different every day, parlors and tie stall barns, 2x, 3x, etc. I don't miss driving in snow storms and having to get up at 2 AM. Enjoyed your video, keep them coming!

Very cool story! We often feel like we were born too late and missed the family farm heyday. We still have a few farms around us that are similar in size, and we love to visit them. Thanks for watching!

Of all the documentation that is needed to keep a dairy farm running, this is an important tool. Well IRS statements and payment are pretty important too.

DHIA can also do a Johne’s test each cow with the milk sample. I never looked forward to milk test day. Always seemed to come when I had other pressing jobs to do. And milking time took longer. Really didn’t like milking with those dang meters

Very nice video, just curious if I mind asking what is your RHA and fat and protein run at? Thanks for making these videos.
@trinitydairy4 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh, it's not great this year. I think a lot has to do with the poor hay that got made in 2019. Right now our RHA is 12,819 lbs with 4.3% fat and 3.4% protein. In comparison, our RHA last year was 15,644lbs with 4.9% fat and 3.6% protein. We are definitely hoping to see an improvement with the new baleage we bought and Spring grass hopefully coming soon. So definitely not impressive numbers this year. Of course we will probably never see numbers like a herd that gets fed TMR would have.

What did Jerry give the Kids? And how did the cows tested out? And those cookies look good! Have a blessed day to you all. Praying at the children are doing good with their school work.

Jerry always brings them different treats. That time it was Reese's peanut butter cups. The cow's test could be better. It has improved since this video. Our top cow is giving us over 100lbs of milk a day, which is pretty awesome for us.

I wonder if those 50 pound bags of calf chow ever fall off the side of the cow chow truck.

What are those things on some of their tail tops.
@trinitydairy4 жыл бұрын
Those are heat detector patches. When a cow is in heat and gets jumped by another cow they turn orange. Then we know to breed them.

What is the rake looking thing above the cows in the milking parlor
@trinitydairy4 жыл бұрын
Those are trainers. They are used to train the cows to step back when they have to poop or pee so it goes into the gutter instead of under themselves. If cows get a lot of urine or feces under themselves it's a breeding ground for mastitis causing bacteria.

How many pounds of milk do u get each day?
@trinitydairy4 жыл бұрын
On average 50 lbs per cow per day.

I would like to know how you guys specifically put those test results to use, aside from the pregnancy tests you didn’t really explain what you’re doing with the results.
@trinitydairy4 жыл бұрын
We use the amount of milk each cow gives as a guide in how much grain each cow will get, as well as determining if a cow is really pulling her weight on the farm. If a cow isn't producing over 12,000lbs of milk in a lactation she isn't paying for the cost to feed her. We also use the tests to determine if we have a cow that has a high somatic cell count which could possibly indicate an infection in her body. Our nutritionist looks at our results as well to decide if our feed ration should be changed or if it's working effectively. If that kind of stuff interests you we can do a quick video once we get our paper results in.

@trinitydairy4 жыл бұрын
@@goldfire1676 right now our butterfat and protein are lower than we like at 4.31bf and 3.4protein. Not sure I understand the second half of the question, but I'll try. Typically I pick a bull for a cow based on breed first, Jersey on Jersey, Holstein on Holstein... except Hojos, for those I go more off size. I pick my bulls from Alta genetics based on their cheese merit, total milk, and preferably A2A2 genetics. Does that answer your question?

what is the highest producing cow you have pounds per day

Oh gosh I would have to look. Actually we are testing again on the 21st and we have a fresh cow that I am very excited to see what she's milking, so I can get back to you.
