Wow Jan what a leap forward!!!! The largest parlour I worked in was a 26 Unit Herring Bone....with just 26 Cluster Sets!!!.....Took 2 guys at least 3 hrs to put through 350 cows but on a Sunday we had it down to 2 and a half!!!!! Cannot beat moving forward and tech now in parlours with drafting etc has made it less labour intensive and better for the milker and the cow at the end of the day!! Stay safe!!!

Some of my favorite pictures are the old aerial pictures of the farm I grew up on and the one I own now. Here in the states they have an archive of old shots and you can find your farm through the years and buy photos. It’s neat to see the changes as time goes on. I just lost my main machine shed in a storm three days ago. Insurance was just here with plans to demo the rest and put up a new bigger shed. Progress has to happen as we continue farming.

Interesting video . In New Zealand, your "Parlour" is called a Cow Shed & barns (rare, but exist in southern parts) are called Cow Barns, and usually only enclosed on 3 sides. Herds are moving to 400 in size+ & the newer sheds are the Rotary style. NZ farms & herds are 99% grass fed. Great to see that a lot of your new "Parlour" equipment is New Zealand made. Keep up the good work.

What are you using to wash the cows teats before milking. We stopped milking over 20 years ago (in Quebec) - we were supposed to be using disposable paper towels (1 per cow) and throwing them away but we used J-Cloths folded over in to a square, sewn together around the outside permiter as well as diagonally corner to corner, and only threw them away when they started to break down. The health inspectors didn't like it but we had one of the lowest Somatic Cell Counts around so they never pushed it. Worked great, better for cleaning off anything that was stuck hard, and much cheaper. We just always had to make sure we had a few made up ahead of time in a drawer in the dairy. We didn't have a milking parlor but usually milked around 50.

When I was around your age I worked on a dairy farm in Ontario, we milked about 50 cows... but it was primitive compared to what you have. We milked used milk cans that had to be emptied after each cow.... no parlor or pipeline. We typically milked six cows at a time... two people milking and one person feeding the cows as they were being milked.

Christine Keleher from what my mom has said in the past while she is making cheese it’s not necessarily the season, it’s what they eat. Like cows going out to eat mostly from the pasture in the summer versus their dry feed. But my mom has only every cared about this for one specific cheese she was making and with raw milk. I don’t think it usually matters.

Hey, Jan!! I'm curious as to why you and Eric use Holsteins for milk cows as opposed to using Jerseys or Guernseys. Do Holsteins give you a better yield, milk fat per litre (gallon for us Yanks), easier to breed and calve, and are they less expensive to maintain (feed, vaccinations, hoof care, and overall health and well being). The question has been on my mind for some time. I asked Eric Weaver (10th Generation Dairyman) the same about his herd. I love my milk and we go through about 3 gallons (11.35 litres) per week, not counting our cheeses - like American, mozarella, mixed shredded cheeses, sliced cheeses, and cottage cheese, ice creams, and yogurts. So, yeah, we are huge in our dairy consumption!! Please shoot me a quick answer. The farms throughout the thumb of Michigan generally have Holsteins and Jerseys, hence my inquiry. Thanks ever so much for putting out quality videos, explaining as you go, and making all of us feel like we are there with you. Take care and keep the awesome videos coming.
