Twice a day, everyday the cows get milked on our dairy farm at 5:00 in the morning and 5:00 at night! Before milking the cows get brought off of pasture and into the barn where we use several milker units and an overhead pipeline setup that bring the milk into the milkhouse's holding tank. From there it is pumped through a filter and into the bulk tank where it'll be picked up by the milk man and sent to a cheese plant!
After milking, the cows head out of the barn to the bunk feeder and then out to the pasture for the night!
The cat walking on and rolling on the stanchions in the video is Billy (Billy the Kitty!), and he has a history of climbing during milking: • Billy the Kitty!

Great video, man! Very nice looking farm, and clean cows. Great to see you keep your cows' tails long to help them keep away the summer bugs. For viewers who aren't aware, this is basically how all dairy farms were setup and used during the last half of the 20th century. And clearly, some still operate this way today with success. During the last 30 years, farms have become much bigger with many more cattle, which in part necessitated the switch away from stall style dairy barns to free-stall barns used for feeding and bedding with a separate milking parlor that cows cycle through for milking.

Country strong I have enjoyed the milking and calf feeding video wow wish the cows that we had to bring in were so trained. We had to round them up and push toward the barn once they were started not so bad it was getting them headed that way toward the barn. The cow herd was nice looking and the calf she was into that bottle had those ears laid back and her tail was moving back and forth she was enjoying that bottle thanks for the video keep them up.

We fed ours inside, so it took no urging to get them in- just open the pasture gate- they would all be there waiting! YUM-Supper time!!! They got silage, grain, and second cut hay inside, and first cutting hay outside to fill em up. The other farm just fed hay and grain inside- they got silage out in the barnyard, but they had to come in and get milked first, lol! A little more work, but it gave instant feedback on who was eating and who was not. Also motivated them to want to come in, lol. (well, that and the nice soft, dry oat straw bedding.)

Thanks for reminders on milking. Let's see deep snow, 10 degrees below zero, frozen water tanks, and drinking milk from the tank. Back in the 60s in Michigan, we would go to the dairy processing plant and get all the free whey we needed. We Fed the whey to our large herd of pigs. Wow did those pigs squirt and grow. I got drafted, sent to the Republic of Vietnam, blown up, spent time in a hospital, got a Ph.D. and never went back to the farm. Regards...

Do you use a lot of Canadian sires in your herd?? Great frames and really nice udders. I been out of it for about 12 years now but I know you must use high type bulls in your breeding program. Loved watching this. Back in the 90's I was still milking a few daughters of Romandale Reflection Marquis. They were as big as a house but their contribution to the tank was very little.

Nice video.We had 60 cows towards the end in a 46 stall barn (switching out 14). We started evening chores at 4pm. Preparing the milk house, feeding the young heifers grain, feeding the dry cows and old heifers haylage in the bunk feeder, feeding haylage and ground feed to the cows in the barn, feeding the bottle calves, start milking at 5pm, done milking by 6:30-6:45, out of the barn / milk house by 7pm or so. How many cows are you milking, and does your family help you and your dad with the evening milking and chores? Take care. Scott

I don't know where to start. lol. so u might want to do a video to answer my questions. can they b milkd earlier than 5 am/pm, I bet the milk can't be consumed raw,. how so the cows know when it's time for milking? I'm surprised the dairy cows don't push n shove like beef cattle,. do you have to deal with milk inspectors? how long does it take to milk 1 cow.
@farmgrowncountrystrong
@farmgrowncountrystrong 7 жыл бұрын
Cows can really be milked at any time a day (and a few dairy farmers I know even milk 3 times a day, every 8 hours), but every 12 hours and at 5:00AM/PM is a schedule that works good for us. Raw milk can be consumed, but it has a very short shelf life compared to pasteurized milk and has a few risks. I do drink some of ours. I think for the most part our cows are pretty tame, but sometimes they really get into it with each other like if they get a new bale of hay or something spooked them. We do have several inspectors. We have a state inspector who comes yearly and checks over everything and then a federal inspector who does the same, though every few years. Milking a cow usually only takes several minutes. Some cows that give more take longer also. I'll have to make a video though!

@@farmgrowncountrystrong if a person will just watch a cow she will show you what side she is comfortable being milked on cow are funny animals when they start coming in the barn they have a certain stall they get into and if you glance down at their legs they will always set the leg back on the side they are comfortable being on I've been kicked across the barn but it was because the cows were accustom to me and if somebody came in talking to loud or banging on anything they got uneasy
