Your 'girls' look very pretty & clean, and none seemed the least bit afraid of you, nor your efforts to herd them. You obviously treat them well & let them have a decent life. I wish I could say that about most American dairy farmers, but I cannot. When I was a kid in the 1960s and 1970s, road trips included views of endless miles of beautiful cows grazing, playing, and just lounging in the fields. Most cows are now confined to 'factory' sheds & I rarely see even a tiny herd out in the open. So, I've stopped consuming milk products for the most part. If I had my own cow or knew one who was treated kindly, I'd go back to being a huge fan of dairy - but I'd have to make my own cheese !
@thefunkyfarmer8 жыл бұрын
+Max Chester thats interesting Max. I guess farming is a lot different in America, especially the scale. A lot more herds are starting to be kept inside here as well now though. I made my own cheese once, didn't go well. Maybe i will try it again one day

Hi as an ex Dairyman myself I can remember when I milked 61 cows in a 48 & a 13 single byres 1974 with 5 bucket machines, changed to 6 units AlfaLaval S System pipeline milking. Cubicle shed for 140 cows around 1982 but we still milked in the old byre with 6 units cows came into something like an abreast parlour to be milked.1984 moved into a new AlfaLaval 16x16 parlour. 1998 cows increased to 200 New 20x20 DeLaval Parlour. Thwaite Farm Ruthwell stopped milking on the 29th April 2013. I have seen so many changes working on this farm over my working life.

We keep our cows in pasture to, very few small farmers like us left in the US . instead of chains around their back side we use a head catch system so you can lock all the cows in with a pull of a lever but you can lock them in single if you need to do vet work as well. I wish they would shut down factory farm it, hurts the little guys like us, but u don't know how it works in your country.

You talk about evil twits that hurt and abuse cows, but most diary farms in the UK and other north western EU countries are like this. Also, hurting and abusing cows results in poorer milk production, and farmers know this.

Sierra i was a dairy farmer for many years and i can tell you that the female calfs are either kept as replacement heffers or sold off to other farms to breed, but unfortunately the male calfs are sold off to a feed plot or a beef farm, or is kept and made bull beef or steers, and yes unfortunately its killed for beef but when its about 18 months old , but iff the calf is lucky it can be made a bull but its very unlikely

I don't want to ask this to an animal rights activist, most of them are american and only mention american standards and the worst standards at that. I'm curious and you seem to be honest with your viewers and so I was wondering if you could answer my questions? What happens to the calves? I mean, do they drink the mothers milk? How do cows produce milk all the time, surely they'd always have to be pregnant/newly mothered? Your cows are very beautiful. They're like big dogs (especially in the skipping video!)
@thefunkyfarmer10 жыл бұрын
Hi. Some people do have some strong views about farming and i think its fair enough if someone wants to be Veggie or Vegan, unfortunately some of the facts about farming do seem to get skewed to fit their argument. To answer your question. We rear the female calves to go into the herd, the male calves we sell at 3 weeks old and they will go to a beef rearing unit.The cows do have to get pregnant to produce milk and so they have a calf about once a year. If you think about it this is no different than in the wild where a bull would serve a cow as soon as he could after she calved. The difference is that we wait at least 2 months after calving before trying to get them back in calf.

One cousin no longer milks cows but he raises and sells replacement heifers. The other cousin has expanded his dairy and now has two farms. Enjoy your channel. Look forward to seeing more and catching up on the ones I have missed.
@edisone18 жыл бұрын
At least here in New York, factory "farmers" have driven family dairy farms into the dust - while a typical family farm might have 50-100 cows, these factory monopolists have 5000 to 6000. There is NO way to treat so many fellow creatures with any decency or respect, let alone having any appreciation of their well being. Sadly, Americans are fed garbage food at cheap prices, instead of high-quality food for what it costs.
@thefunkyfarmer8 жыл бұрын
