The butterfly image at 4:09 looks like a viceroy butterfly.

Here in San Antonio, TX, our native milkweed is called Zizotes. I’m growing some, and not long ago, we hosted some monarch caterpillars and had the pleasure of releasing them when they became butterflies. It’s. important to grow native milkweeds in order to not disrupt the migration of the monarchs. Thank you for the nicely done review.

You were lucky to witness the miracle of butterfly being born...

@@AuthenticGardening Yes, and we now have 10 black swallowtail caterpillars cocooned and waiting to emerge. I didn’t realize that our fennel plant was a host plant for them. They ate it down to the root, lol, but they were amazing to watch. 🌻

Good luck! The good thing about milkweed - it's easy... at least that is my experience with growing it

I wonder if I’ve failed to germinate milkweed seeds because I didn’t know about putting them in the fridge? I’ll definitely have to try that!
@AuthenticGardening2 жыл бұрын
There may be several reasons why seeds failed to germinate. They might have been old, dead. Bugs might have eaten the tender seedlings right after germination, Birds or rodents might have disturbed the soil and kill the germinated seeds. You might have planted them too deep, gave too much water, or not enough water. Etc., etc. To tell you the truth, I knew nothing about keeping them cold before planting, when I threw my seeds onto soil, but they germinated and grew wonderful plants anyhow. So, try again, and you might have a better luck growing this wonderful plant. And if you fail again, leave another comment, and I might be able to mail you seeds or even live sprouts

@@AuthenticGardening Thanks for your thoughtful reply, which I somehow failed to see when you wrote it. I’ve got some not-very-fresh milkweed chilling in the fridge. We’ll see what happens this year! I get plenty of Anise Swallowtail caterpillars on the fennel I grow for them.
