Appreciated seeing the Lackawanna northern. Grew up in the del water gap area, the Paulinskill viaduct and others are still standing in that area

7:00 when they were waiting what is that on the pole they touch when the other guy is saying not until it's green?
@MaxSupercars3 жыл бұрын
They do not have the track block occupancy detector, so they have to set block occupancy manually by touching the bar switch on the pole... Based on this is then the signal controlled.

Question why is the whistle in between the boiler and the drivers and not on the top?
@jamesm66383 жыл бұрын
the whistles have to be bigger than scale to make decent sound, and big whistles don't really look good on top
@weird10123 жыл бұрын
How strong are these engines btw, I never knew that they could accelerate so fast
@jamesm66383 жыл бұрын
Much stronger than you think, obviously it depends on the engine, but they're 1/8th scale, so that means about 1/64th the piston surface area, and let's say 50-75% the full-size loco's boiler pressure (not superheated in most cases at this scale), and in the case of those northerns, only (lol) about 2500lbs of weight providing traction, which doesn't seem like a lot when you look at the numbers, but it always surprises people to see them really performing, I get a kick out of people's reactions to it

How do you build whistles for these ? Are they too big to fit on top of the trains itself ?
@Nubby0073 жыл бұрын
Scaled down whistles generally sound very wimpy so if you want something akin to the full size ones you make a dummy on top and hide a larger one in the frames. You can also just use both. Have a working scaled down one and a full size one hidden (that's what I did too)
@chadbeverly49263 жыл бұрын
@@Nubby007 but an actual full sized scale whistle on a loco that size, wouldn't it be too big ? Generally steam whistles aren't from my understanding.
@chadbeverly49263 жыл бұрын
@@Nubby007 I think I'm thinking of this wrong , you can have a full sized whistle thats built to scale correct or is it bigger than the scale ?
@kirbyyork76693 жыл бұрын
@@chadbeverly4926 scale whistles on any live steam locomotive in 1/8 scale or smaller makes a very shrill sound (like a squeak) so if you want a whistle that makes a sound that is more intricate to a full size steam locomotive it has to be bigger in diameter and have more area in the chambers for a deeper sound. The longer the bell of the whistle, the lower pitched the sound. Now you want the locomotive to appear like the full size prototype, so the large whistle would have to be under the locomotive either at the left side or the right side, in the center between the frame rails or under the cab and you can add a dummy scale whistle to the prototype location of the locomotive.

I think you shouldn't make I in a backyard, mabye in a forest area as the land is cheap and it gives I nice vibe to it. Not to mention you can make tour own railroad ties
