As longtime residents of Huntsville know, The Mill On Main Street has been a fixture in the town's dining scene for years. Situated in a historic building that once housed a grist mill in the late 1800s, the restaurant has capitalized on its charming location and rich history to become one of the most popular eateries in the area.
Unfortunately, our recent experience at The Mill left much to be desired. My wife, Missy, and I visited Huntsville in July to spend time with family, and we decided to try this local hotspot for dinner one evening. Our expectations were high given its reputation and prime location on Main Street.
We both opted for the fish and chips, a dish often used as a litmus test for pub-style restaurants. Sadly, The Mill's version fell short in several areas. The portion of fries was disappointingly small, and they appeared to be generic frozen fries, likely from a large commercial supplier like McCain or Cavendish-the kind you can easily pick up at Costco. This lack of attention to detail was surprising for a restaurant of The Mill's caliber.
The fish itself was equally underwhelming. While the menu boasted that it was made with Muskoka Cream, a local Huntsville beer, the result was more batter than fish. The excessive coating overwhelmed any delicate flavors the fish might have had, leaving us with a heavy, greasy dish that didn't showcase the potential of fresh local ingredients.
Given The Mill On Main's storied past and prime location, we had hoped for a meal that reflected the charm and character of Huntsville. The building itself, with its history dating back to the town's early days, creates an atmosphere ripe with potential. However, the food we experienced didn't match the restaurant's setting or reputation.
It's worth noting that The Mill on Main Street has been a part of Huntsville's culinary landscape for decades. The building's transformation from a working mill to a restaurant is a testament to the town's ability to preserve its heritage while adapting to modern needs. However, based on our recent visit, the cuisine hasn't kept pace with the expectations set by the restaurant's history and popularity.
In conclusion, while The Mill On Main Street may be special in Huntsville's history and dining scene, our experience was disappointing. Missy and I would rate it as a miss, especially considering its reputation as one of the town's most popular restaurants. Perhaps our experience was an anomaly, but for now, we'd be hesitant to recommend it to others looking for a memorable dining experience in Huntsville.
