I procrastinate because I don't want to make mistakes and have to plan it perfectly. However once I get building something happens: tools, bad cut, things break etc and suddenly the "perfect" design has changed. In many cases these unplanned changes end up working better than the original "perfect" design. Sometimes though they are mistakes, cut on the wrong side of the line for example, that just can't be fixed and a new piece has to be made. We will only get better at doing something by actually doing something and NOT watching another 50 KZbin videos about it. Don't misunderstand, KZbin is great for providing inspiration but it is quite different to watch videos about using a tablesaw and then firing one up and ripping an 8 foot board in half lengthwise for the first time! Thanks for your honesty and encouragement and let us all go and make something that most intimidates us!

Great video and project Brian, whenever im down on motivation for my own projects, a quick Smugglers Room video gives me all sorts of motivation. The hand made look is the best I agree, i think some people rely to heavily on 3d printing and laser cutters etc, they are great for mass production, but Maker stuff for yourself, nothing beats the handmade look, the seats look great, you nailed them :) and 'making something from nothing' is always waaaay more fun than just printing or laser cutting imo I see that the Smugglers Army is growing, nearly doubled since last december on Patreon, congrats you deserve it mate

Us too, time will tell. That said, I am thinking that the wear and tear will add to it, and it will be easy enough to make touch ups as needed.

@@TheSmugglersRoom maybe a clearcoat of some sort to seal it and stop the paint getting on the clothing. It would need to be a flexible one though so that it does not crack when you sit on the foam.

While I seriously love how this bench looks. I do wanna ask. How comfortable is it to sit on? I get that it's not a bench to recline on and chill out and such. But I am still curious how it sits Suddenly got you in my recommended, (The drinks case) and loved it. Decided to watch every video after, and this series alone is HIGHLY inspirational! Sadly I don't have a spare room to do something like this with, just living in an apartment. But I know what I'll be doing when I move to a bigger place!

Hi there! Thank you so much for watching, and for checking out our other projects, we really appreciate it! The bench is not half bad to sit on. The biggest sacrifice is that I had to make the actual "seat" a little shallow, so when you sit down it does feel like you want the seat a tad longer. But I'll be honest, I could see myself sitting down there with an ice cold adult beverage watching A New Hope without feeling like I can't sit there any longer. It's really pretty comfortable overall.

Dude, yall have amazing team work! And your bench looks amazing for it. Besides... custom ships need custom parts..benches included. That said. i think maybe by being intimidated by the scale and imposed value of this project..you my have missed an opportunity ( or maybe its a design choice ), but much like the diner benches the originals were modeled after. You could have hidden mundane storage in the seats. for all the non cool stuff a hang out actually needs. This in NO WAY lessens or cheapens the effort yall put into this. its not only amazing and YOURS... its 1000 times better then the one i dont have.( yet ) once again you two inspire and have made amazing..out of nothing.

Am I assuming correctly that the aluminum powder you list is being brushed into the mold before the casting material instead of the site's instructions to mix 1:1:1 a:b:powder. Is that to save powder or a trick of the trade to give it that metal look without wasting a ton of mix on something you don't need something to "have the weight and feel of metal"? Awesome work of course.

Correct. We powered the mold itself so that the powder is on the outside of the cast piece. There really isn’t a reason to powder the inside of the cast piece.

Looks great, Brian! Electronics question: what kind of LEDs are you using? I thought that typical LEDs would blow out when connected directly to a 9V.

Thank you! These LEDs I found are AMAZING! No resistor needed which totally saves a ton of time. Here is a link to the warm light versions, but there are sooooooo many. Fantastic job on the build, but the paint job could do with a bit of work I think, it looks, well, painted, as opposed to naturally worn and dirty. Personally I never use an airbrush because if there's one thing you can guarantee, it's that something airbrushed always looks airbrushed. Same goes for using black paint as a weathering colour, natural dirt is never that black, it always looks artificial..
