This is the best Cohen brothers movie period, and absolutely in my top 10 movies of all time. The performances are universally brilliant, the script and dialogue second to none. It is movie as art, the characters all flawed without exception, and each adds a new dimension to the plot. At no time does it slip into cliche and the CB’s signature reference to past genres are used to add layers and depth to the film rather than detract from it’s uniqueness and originality. At it’s heart I see it as a film on the nature of male relationships and apart from Marcia Gay Harden’s Verna, other female roles are mainly extras. It explores the male perspective on friendship, loyalty, love, violence and my favourite, “ethics” , in a nuanced and atypical way, where actions replace words, emotions are understated, and what is unsaid is more important than what is said. This is a must see, and a movie that deserves multiple viewings.

Miller's Crossing is my favorite Cohen brothers movie, and I'm so disappointed that it didn't get a 4K restoration as it looked just absolutely stunning during the original theatrical release. Criterion does do a very good job, but it can be a dark movie and HDR can bring out the detail. I'm up in the air about getting it even though I have the old blu-ray. The most annoying thing I have heard is that the Cohen brothers cut two minutes out of the movie for this release, including the line "Jesus, Tom," after Tom hits Starr with the chair. Now if that's true I may not get it at all.

I could have sworn I heard that line though? Does he say it more then once? Definitely a beautiful HD transfer that I highly recommend.

@@midlevelmedia Frankie's "Jesus, Tom!" was definitely removed, as was Lazar's messenger's "Take care now" and then his hand motion to his henchmen to follow him to exit. It's a damn shame. My favorite Coen Bros movie (if my user name didn't make that clear ;-), i've waited YEARS for this on Criterion and I'm just devastated. :-(

Miller's Crossing is not my favorite Cohen brother's movie. It's, by far, my favorite movie of all time. But it's what I've heard called a "grower". I'm a huge fan of the band The National, and they are also regarded as putting out albums knowns as "growers". In other words, you may hear them, and like them, but you won't really love them until you hear them multiple times. It was the same for me with Miller's Crossing. I liked it the first time I saw it. But every time it came on cable I found myself watching it. And after the 4th or 5th time I watched it, I realized I LOVED it. There were so many nuances I missed, narrative-wise, but more importantly I found myself falling in love with the dialogue. You don't hear phrases like that normally, which made it so amusing to hear "what's the rumpus" in a Marvel movie. Every time I watched it I found something different. So now I watch it every 4 months or so. More to the point, the fact that you gave it a 4.5 out of 5 on your first viewing shows how amazing it is. Watch it a few more times. I can almost guarantee it will become one of your all-time favorites.

Millers Crossing is outstanding.. I'd definitely put it in their top 5 efforts. 1.. The Big Lebowski 2.. Fargo 3.. No Country for old Men 4..Millers Crossing 5.. A serious Man ° Story telling at it's best.. ° A very strong veteran cast ° Amazing cinematography ° Outstanding score ° Recently included in Criterion Collection Jon Polito worked extensively with Coen Brothers Millers Crossing The Big Lebowski The Man who wasn't there Baton Fink The Hudsucker Proxy.

The Coen Brothers weren't credited as directors together until 2004 because they were told it would be unlikely to get nominated as an unestablished duo. So, yes, this is as much of an official Coen bros movie as any of them.

It is funny that you made me think what movies has Gabriel Byrne starred in besides The Usual Suspects. I was thinking he was in so much but couldn't think of anything besides End of Days and Vikings & War of the Worlds TV Shows. After checking,He has been in so much. He really is one of the ultimate character actors. Not really a star but great in the roles he has done.

The movie has been cut by almost two minutes and the transfer is exactly the same as the 2011 Fox edition. Give it a miss.

Glad you liked it. Looks like Criterion did an awesome job on this one. Too bad it's a movie I never liked, finding it quite boring and with a minimalist score, but it appears I'm in the minority. Keep up the good work, love your channel!

Sorry but don’t care for your reviews. First it took you 17 minutes to describe this film way to long with your antidotes that remind you of other actors or movies. Most important you forgot to mention there is a scene on the Criterion that is cut out from the previous releases. It occurs when Tom hits Frankie with a chair after which Frankie looks confused and says “Jesus Tom” and sulks away. That scene is missing so that was a deal breaker for me for the Criterion Edition. Hopefully this deletion will help other purchasers make a decision to upgrade or stay with the previous edition.
