Albert Finney took over the role of Leo with two days before filming was scheduled to start after the original actor slated for the role suddenly died. The Coen brothers got on the phone to Finney , who was in England at the time, They FedExed him the script and he was on a plane headed to the US. He's learning his lines on the plane. As soon as he touched down, in the US he was in the makeup chair. A great actor, to be missed. RIP sir,.

Literally my favourite Gangster film. I love the symbolism of the hat and how its a very simple thing but it is really effective as a signifier for pride. Being Irish and knowing the history of that period I can't help but feel that there's a subtle un-acknowledged dimension in that Tom and likely Leo were formerly involved in the Irish revolution in the 20s, and that experience of having lived through this great movement, having a cause, that then ended with dissapontment, compromise and a bitter civil war is a big part of what informs their characters. Its what makes Tom a bitter cynical man who drowns his feelings with alcohol. Its why he's fundamentally a tragic character.
@rdmottern
@rdmottern 2 жыл бұрын
I'm going to disagree a bit. Tom was loyal to Leo, business wise, and admitted he was having an affair with Verna to trigger the public beat down by Leo so he could get in with Casper, to bring down Casper's organization. Leo even asks him if he did that at the end and Tom blows it off.

Yep, Tom is a stoic. He's not put off by the fact that he's in a bad situation, and he's willing to put up with any situation to do what he thinks needs to be done. And he is true to Leo, as he's helping him even after he's decided that their friendship is over.
@cgmoran91

Tom was the most Machiavellian of the group. He chose when to get beatings when it served his endgame. Protect Leo from himself, even if it meant in the end he had to leave Leo.

Millers Crossing ranks up there with Road to Perdition in it's style and tone. Gabriel Byrne was top notch as a down but not out fixer. My favorite boss almost ever- Albert Finny was also awesome. THIS was one of those movies that I could easily watch as a TV series. The best line ever- It's gettin' so a businessman can't expect no return from a fixed fight. Now, if you can't trust a fix, what can you trust? For a good return, you gotta go bettin' on chance - and then you're back with anarchy, right back in the jungle.- Johnny Casper

The scene where Leo gets the upper hand over his would be assassins is one of the most beautifully put together scenes in modern cinema, you just have to overlook the fact that he got about 500 rounds out of a single drum magazine on the Tommy gun! Interestingly, that version of Danny Boy was recorded just for that scene so the timing of the lyrics would match up with the action on the screen.

If it wasn't the original John McCormick recording I heard a thousand times growing up it was a close copy. That recording was a staple for tradirional Irish America for decades. I had the song sung at both my parent's funerals since my father's name was Danny. It was a very well shot (no pun) scene. You just have to ignore that he fires more than a single drum magazine would hold. In fact he fires a lot more rounds than he needs to and the multiple recoils would throw his aim off, as well as partially blinding and deafening him for several seconds. Thompsons, especially the early versions, are great guns but you have to have trigger control to be effective.

Mr. Franzese, I understand that your former life is a serious subject that should addressed seriously. However, have you ever considered the movie “Oscar”, starring Sylvester Stallone among others, for your Mob Movie Monday? I believe it was a stage play that was adapted and filmed as a movie. While it is undoubtedly a comedy, it still deals with certain issues of “that life”, including overzealous law enforcement, public image, loyalty of employees and underlings, and simply trying to balance work goals with family priorities. Please let me know your thoughts on possibly covering this movie in the future.

Hello! Thanks for reviewing this film. I heard of it but never figured it would be filled with so many twists and turns. I will watch it. I hope that you will review movies from different cultures. The incomparable, impossibly handsome Alain Delon produced and starred in the Borsalino films which are based on Marseille gangsters. He also did a great heist film called Le clan sicilien. In Hindi cinema, the notorious gangster Dawood Ibrahim, who was the son of a police officer, inspired films such as Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. Thanks!

It's a heck of a lot like Casablanca and Humphrey Bogart's character....except rougher. Coen Brothers got a lot of inspiration from films like The Long Goodbye starring Elliot Gould as Phillip Marlowe. This film including The Big Sleep with Humphrey is their basis for the Big Lebowski. Where Polito makes a cameo as a private detective.

In Casablanca Rick was involved in the anti-fascist struggles in Spain and Ethiopia, I always felt there was an unspoken implication that Tom Regan had been in the IRA in the 20s and fought in the War of Independence and Civil war. There's something about Tom that suggests he was once a man of principle that had become jaded by the experience of grief and seeing his ideals dashed by circumstances.

:What's the rumpus" So glad you finally did this great movie, with great lines. Tom is the most Machiavelli of the group. He chose when to get beatings when it served his endgame. Protect Leo from himself, even if it meant in the end he had to leave Leo. Agreed there are no good guys in this. The Leo in the house scene was is one of the best. Other great scenes, but I wont give you "the high hat" and spoil it.

you missed the whole point about the main character Tom, who was loyal to Leo. Tom recognized the threat Casper was even with Leo's great over confidence and swagger, so he gets inside Casper's organization, convinces Casper that he and Leo became enemies and then proceeded to set off a complete implosion of Casper's gang, even Leo was convinced of Tom's disloyalty. This movie was also great dark comedy, one couldn't help but laugh that Leo, an Irish man was so smitten with a Jewish woman that he was wearing a yamika at the funeral of her brother, and she still treated him like dirt, a tough guy like Leo reduced to a cat-whipped stooge chasing a trashy broad that is so confident in her dominant place, she humiliates him infront of Tom by making him walk home after the funeral.. The story line was great, but the music in the movie was even better, the Irish tone and grandeur of it was awesome. Speaking of dark gangster comedies, you have to review John Travolta's movie 'Get Shortie', that's got some real laughs in it too, as well as Tony Soprano.

Would love to see Michael review "True Romance" So many great scènes; but .. "The Sicilian Scène" " I haven't killed anybody ... since 1984. " One of thé pinnacles in modern cinema! One of the greatest by Tarantino's hand. Walken at his best vs Hopper And then there's even an almost easily overlooked scène with an unrecognisable Oldman.. What a movie Christian Slater, Patricia Arquete, Christopher Walken, Dennis Hopper Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson James Gandolfini, Chris Penn Brad Pitt, Val Kilmer Tom Sizemore... Bronson Pinchot ... What a cast

'Millers Crossing' is one of the most overlooked films that I can think of. It's perfectly executed from start to finish. The Coen Bros made a truly "Coen-esque" Mob Movie. Full of dark humor, great detail, incredible dialog and it's full of great homages to the old gangster genre. Beautifully filmed as well. Redemption isn't something the Coen Bros are necessarily interested in. They explore deeper themes and socio-political/economic issues... But never heavy handed or biased. Which is 100% why it works. They don't preach, they explore and allow for moral ambiguity

there was actually a second love triangle in the movie that i believe was the central force to the plot (i.e. why johnny caspar wanted bernie bernbaum dead). leo: "so you want to kill him?" dane: "for staters..." later in the film tom: "bernie and mink are as cozy as lice--and it ain't just business" and after that... tom: "of course there's always the wild card when love is involved." johnny: "i know mink is eddie dane's boy, but i don't make it out that way." and subsequently an enraged eddie dane to tom regan... "you killed mink, you sonuvabitch --by god i'll hear you say it."

Yep. Not just "friendly" as said in this review. Verna also talks about how everyone hates Bernie because he's "different", and Bernie tells Tom how Verna even tried to have sex with him when they were young as a way of turning him straight.

Every move Tom made was in his long term benefit,even if he had to take a few ass kickings short term, but he also acted in Leo's long term interest. He saw the threat Casper posed even when Leo didn't and acted to protect Leo from Casper and from Leo's own arrogance, by the end of the movie, he had eliminated Leo's rival, and he had assured the Bernie wasn't going to drag Leo into any more situations where his blind spot for Verna would keep him from making a hard, but necessary decision.

A remake of the movie "The Glass Key" first done by George Raft (version most closely follows the book by Dashiell Hammett) and later Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake (my favorite of the two films). Cohen brothers movies are often dark, particularly remakes of love stories like "The Glass Key". Think you missed the mark; the story is about loyalty in the face of one's own interests. He wants the girl but he remains loyal to his boss and friend even after they breakup, and he does so with great risk to both his life and the girls affections. Common theme in all 3 versions of the movie. Tom's self-sacrifice is the redeeming characteristic of the story.

@@christophertaylor9100 Different from the original and the book but much like the Alan Ladd version. Two guys, both friends and associates, into the same girl. One risks both his life and his chance for the girl to save his friend from himself. And there's a brother who's a problem and gets killed. Very much alike, I think. Coen Bros. always have to be weird and dark. I like them all! :)

These Mob Movie Monday videos are always something to look forward to Mr. Franzese! Of course you’ve covered all the classics, so I really do find it interesting to hear your take on the less well known mob movies, in particular ones that are new to you. Recommending two great somewhat more modern mob movies you may not have seen. “Eastern Promises” (2007) About the Russian mob operating in England and an innocent nurse (who due to her occupation) gets mixed up in their internal affairs. “Gangster No. 1” (2000) A fascinating film with a very fascinating lead character. A mob story set in the 60s in England. Would love to hear your take on the main character! Have a great wee!

My father recommended this movie to me, many years ago. On his advice, I watched it and enjoyed it. The Coen Bros really made their mark on the art of cinema. Their movie topics are so diverse, that it’s possible to watch one after another without being bored. Hard to believe these were the same guys that did “The Big Lebowski”.

And the "True Grit" remake. Though what they added to the original John Wayne version of much value is beyond me, except for perhaps the last scene where she calls Frank James "trash". Still a very different film from their others. And "Raising Arizona" and "O Brother Where Art Thou". Their original debut film "Blood Simple" is one of my all time favorites and an example of how great a film can be with almost a zero budget.
