It has evolved over time, just like spoken language has! Flip the question and ask, “Who chose the words for us to speak in English, ‘I’m good. How are you?’” Same question can be asked for Spanish, French, German, etc. All these languages evolved naturally! As for the origins of American Sign Language in particular a lot of it if from LSF (French Sign Language), and Martha’s Vineyard (an island where an overwhelming amount of the population was deaf, and everybody communicated in sign). The two sort of merged together, and over time Americans have modified signs to make them their own!

@@thema1998 that was my point. It was a sarcastic comment. I don't think there are.
@roisinrowan13414 жыл бұрын
@@andremckenzie9746 there are plenty of D/deaf and hoh people who don't sign, are still learning sign, or for whatever reason aren't good at it. many people don't have the access to proper education or are forced to use more 'normal' methods of communication, and for some D/deaf/hoh people sign language just isn't something they want or need to learn.

I watched the interview with audio first, then without audio after to have a better appreciation and understanding of a deaf person's perspective. I definitely would appreciate this interpreters facial expressions, because even though they appear exaggerated when you have audio, without audio her face successfully conveys all the intonations and everything! Wow!
