Nice to see other people doing this! I have been an automotive machinist for over 10 years using a pinnacle and a heavy flycutter. I cant tell what your rpm are...I run at about 350 max. To all the haters..you dont know what you are talking about. When you set up your flycutter you set it incredibly finely. Your trailing edge is literally 1-2/100mm higher. The amount of cancavity is extemely minimal. Do the math. I have NEVER had a single head come back in 10 years of doing at least one or 2 a week. The turret mill is a very useful and versatile machine. I re-bore on it at well as line bore using shop made boring bars.

usually them not coming back is a bad sign, not a good one. now if you rephrased that to say "Never had a bad head come back, but the customer always came back for business" then thats another story...

The head is out of tram. The cutter was not in contact with the work on most of it's diameter. This is a problem with such a large diameter, because it cuts a dish, not flat.

I’ve seen this argument a few times and it puzzles me. If the head was trammed 100% I’m told there would be a back cut. If it’s off tram a thou or two it cuts a slight dish, but I’ve heard that’s ok within reason. I’m new to all this so I’m not sure

@@adamcowman439 dedicated block and head resurfacers are purposly manufactured out of tram as to not backcut. It is minor and nit creating any concaveness you can measure without sensitive measuring techniques. Feeler gages and a straight edge won't do. Those who keep saying otherwise literally have no clue what they are talking about and clearly cannot do the math to come up with the theroetical error value like one learns in trade school to become a machinist.

@@whiplashmachine Thanks thats what I thought. I aim to skim heads with a bridgeport mill and was told the head being .001 or .002 out of tram would be too much but also seen alot of people do it and get perfect results. Thanks.

@@adamcowman439 skim the head and then run a dial across the Y axis. You'll be able to see if any error just occurred. I would be more concerned about the fact the table support width is much less then the travel required to surface the head. After resurfacing, tilt the head 90° and run a dial the length to see if in fact straight. Just simply dialing in the same settup as the cut will be a false comparison.

Mill is out of tram. Back side of cutter should make a clean up pass. Means the head is cut concave
@mrblack615 жыл бұрын
My buddy is an engine builder, his head decking Schou grinder specs setting the head out 003" or less over about 16" as a max. Ie, it cuts on ne side and concave some nano amount (a few tenths across the width) intentionally.

@@nicholaslandolina Tram not team means how square or flat the cutter is to the surface. Look up "Traming mill" for a better explanation.
@whiplashmachine4 жыл бұрын
No @macgyver15147, the cutter should be tilted a couple thou to "not" cut a "cleanup pass". It would effect finish by dragging accross already machined surface, especially when cuttin a diesel head with hard pre cups. Even brand new, high dollar block/head resurfacers are designed to cut on one side only. The concaveness is minimal over a head/block width (7" average) with a 13+" flycutter tilted 0.002" .

The weight also helps with rigidity. If you have a skinny tool it's more prone to chatter.
