Milling Spalted Logs with a Bandsaw Mill Jig

I think it's a good thing I have a few close-by neighbors because that is all that prevents me from making a full-size lumber milling machine for my back yard. I just love milling wood, and I can see why the people who collect logs and mill them, either full time or even just as a part-time job ... love their work. Every log you open up is a mystery until you see what's in it. I always liken it to opening a present ... you never really know what's inside until you open it and everyone is different.
It's even more fun when you can find special logs that "might" contain special features like figure or spalting, and even if the longs are short, I still get that same thrill ... and the wood is every bit as useful, you just use it for smaller projects, or for feature wood on larger projects esp woods like spalted maple.

I’ve cut a number of spalted logs as well and love that surprise you find inside sometimes! I would want others to know you will really want your dust collection on and even wear a mask when you are cutting, as the dust and spores that get airborne during the cutting process can be really irritating to your throat and lungs.

@@Hengry-hn7rb Agree on all counts! Im 62 and just started woodworking 5 years ago after 55 years of giving up "mechanicing" for hobby and passion. I've gotten a lot from Colin and a few other really sharp woodworkers. Thanks to all. It's pretty bad when you dig through firewood to see if there is a treasure in there before it goes in the fireplace!

Here is a tip. When using double sided tape, to make it easier to remove the backing try lightly scoring the backer with a utility knife and peel the backing from the middle instead of the edges. Like your vids feel free to use this tip. MC JIM

Neat. I know where there are some larger bits of logs that have been down a good while. Most definitely spalted in some way but I'd need to find out who the landowner is to ask about them.

I have resaw book matched pieces of maple fence posts that are at least 80 years old, and the combination of grain, figuring, and spalt, is just amazing! They will make extremely beautiful and unique guitar and bass tops!

When we moved into our new house in 1989, there were two pieces of 6/4 cedar in the garage that were leftover pieces of what was used for the fascia. I kept them because I figured one day I would find a use for them, and now that I'm retired for medical reasons and have been trying to build my woodworking shop, I can finally do something with them. That is when, or if I ever clean out my garage of stuff collected from 40+ years of marriage, and 35+ years of automotive repair and finally get all the equipment I want/need.

Are you collecting wood from Crown land, be careful! Recently while picnicking at a MN state park we had Picked a few interesting mushrooms to dry, park staff Came by and took the mushrooms, nothing was to be Removed from the state park.

I also love to mill some lumber on my band saw, as you say, it's like Christmas, what you get is a surprise. I do mostly wood turning, wood jewelry and cutting boards with some of the interesting wood I get.

You can normally tell cedar from its smell but perhaps not all species of cedar have this distinctive smell. Either way it does look good. I'd love to have the equipment to mill my own lumber but that may be something to think about for the future.

That's what I was thinking too. Also the cedar here, in Florida, has a bright red heart wood. Sometimes purple when it's freshly cut. It's undeniable it's cedar.

Like opening up a gift and being totally surprised. I have a hickory log laying outside my shop that is spalted. It's about 20 feet long and 18 inches across. But I know my old Craftsman bandsaw will never be able to cut through it. It's driving me crazy to open it up.

I didn't catch why Spalted wood is desired. I've cut down a lot of trees in my treeline. Some already dead and lying on the ground. I've split a lot of that wood for heat and I've seen a lot of those markings. It's mostly Box Elder which, as I understand that, it's not a desirable wood to work with. So which would be more important. a far as value; The Spalting or the wood species?

I was thinking there would be something about your jig but not so much. It looks like one I tried but I think my eyes were bigger than my band saw, it was 4' long! It worked, sort of, in that I could slab a long but the weight made it hard to hold up getting started and then to finish the cut I had to pull the jig thru. I had a slightly longer than sled runner and an adjustable right angle piece I could advance at whatever angle I needed for my cut. Due to total weight of jig and log I gave up on it.

Exactly! Christmas, I have been trying to describe opening a log as anticipation builds. I cobbed together a chainsaw mill a few years ago and that wood is as air dried as it gets here. I had the temptation to close up a log, as you mention. Even with paper, that dreaded black mold set in. Take care Chris

Would it be better to make boards out of the logs first and then let them dry by stacking them with spacer in between like you would big slabs?

about wood with only little difference in pattern, - i suggest a fast heating / burn on the surface with a gas torch,,, it will give a lot of contrast,,,- if you dont set it on fire...LOL

As with the video before, where you went out and found your log, This video is way below the standard you had set with your previous videos. Very disappointing. it was more like "I have nothing really to show you, but I feel I must make a video".

⭕⭕ As a kid I remember going to Ilion NY in the summer with my mom and dad. My father was a world class skeet shooter as well as President of NY skeet shooting association. Anyway, Remington Arms had a gun club on top of a hill where they would hold state shoots each year. One year I remember my father being so excited over two pieces of wood. Not just any wood but hand picked wood for his stock and four arm better known as furniture for his Remington 1100. Wow was that wood pretty. It would change like 3D when you moved it and the grain in it I have never seen anything like it since. I have been to a lot of wood working shows and have yet to see wood like I did back in the 60's.
