When we lived in DC, our food budget doubled to $600 for a family of three, and we were shopping at Aldi and meal planning and trying to get our expenses down. Especially if he doesn't have a car, his grocery options may be limited. A lot of the local grocery stores were significantly more expensive than Aldi, sometimes as much as twice as expensive. Meal planning, meal prep, limiting food waste, and cleaning up are time consuming too, so if he works long hours he may not be able to do that.
@katherineburtt25024 жыл бұрын
“Where is this guy’s food budget going? That’s a lot of money.” Dude, he’s probably out of the house from 7am to 10pm 5 to 6 days a week. He’s at work all the time and doesn’t have time to cook. If he ends up staying late at work unexpectedly he and his coworkers might order in food, or he sleeps in because he was working late and grabs a coffee and a bagel on the way to work, etc. He’s outsourcing his food prep because he literally has to choose between prepping food and sleep. I think an extra couple hundred bucks a month is worth it at that point, and that’s coming from a person with a similar schedule who cooks a lot of her food from scratch and schleps a full day’s worth of food on the bus and commuter train.
@QueenofDC4 жыл бұрын
Katherine Burtt I totally agree! When I worked in the Senate in DC at his age my food budget was insane because we ate out ALL the time and socialized around food, even with the free receptions. When I started to focus on my money I realized the obscene amount of money I spent on food. I switched it up. His refrigerator was full but working late nights, who feels like cooking. Now I meal prep but days I get caught up and can’t, there goes $100 for the week.

Graham, I’ve watched all of your D.C. reactions and I’ve seen across the board that the food budget always seems higher than other cities. From my experience of living in D.C., we love our happy hours, weekend brunches ($40+ for a meal and unlimited mimosas), and we’re so busy we tend to eat out more and grab food on the go. Also, if we’re meeting with friends or colleagues who may live in Maryland or Virginia, it’s easier to just meet at a restaurant somewhere in the middle instead of going to someone’s house and taking an expensive uber back home since the trains stop running somewhat early. And like he said, he works a lot of late nights so I think to keep up with that he may not always be food prepping. I loved living in D.C. but the decision I made to participate in the social life had me broke 😩.

I’m from the DMV and it’s weird to see someone live on this salary; maybe I was bad with money when I was younger, but $45K ran through my hands like water. It’s so fascinating seeing how people budget. Also, being from the D. C. area and now living in the L.A. area, I have to say I’ve NEVER met anyone who actually greets their neighbors. I’ve been in my condo for 6 years and don’t know anyone’s name and haven’t said more than 20 words (in all 6 years) anyone here...and that was only to tell them not to block my garage. I’ve never talked to my neighbors anywhere I’ve lived, TBH and probably wouldn’t be able to identify a burglar from a neighbor because I have no idea what they even look like because I never cared to pay attention. Maybe I’m just a curmudgeon who lives near other curmudgeons, but I’m floored people are “neighborly” in modern times. What an interesting fellow!

Ever thought of moving? I left the Bay Area for a middle of the country state with No Income Tax and a lower cost of living. Not only did my standard of living go up but my income also increased because there are so many unfilled jobs here due to the explosive growth and companies leaving California. Granted the weather sucks but my quality of life has increased so much I wish I would have done this 5-6 years ago.

@@brianc9036 Oh yes. My girlfriend and I talked about moving to Las Vegas or Texas where we can live with much lower cost of living, and be able to save more money. We're still discussing what our future move is going to be, how we're going to manage if we do this or that, making sure that whatever we decide to do we won't regret and be miserable. It's tougher decision than I thought, moving out of state to go somewhere where we won't have any family or friend support (most of our families live in So Cal), but we'll see how all this unfold at the end. 10:16 - I would love to know what time of day they filmed this to get him on an empty Metro car, definitely not rush hour! Here's my guess on $600 food. $10 per workday for takeout lunch (fairly common among the white collar workforce) = $200. Dinner out once a week at $40 = $160. Groceries for the remaining $240. Happy hour is also very common in the Capitol Hill world and since that didn't get it's own category it's probably lumped into there somewhere too.
@Julia-yl4dj4 жыл бұрын
About living in San Francisco and I read an article that said that $600/ month would be normal for a person who eats out regularly and spend money on groceries in the city. I guess groceries simply cost more in a city like SF (or in this case Washington DC). $600= normal $400-500/month is frugal. If you eat meat and have any inclination at all towards high-quality foods then the food -budget is way different than eating non-organic lentils and rice or factory farmed chicken and 30cent iced coffee.

I saw a Costco brand in there also. There were no high carb foods in the freezer and the chicken looked like a good quality. I'm guessing he also buys organic when possible and his only "vice" is his ice cream! At the very moment that you see the ice cream, he is saying...." I only spend more when I feel that its necessary". I don't know how food prices are in Washington compared to California, but its very possible to spend $150.00 a week for one person, if you are trying to eat high quality foods as much as possible. Again.... notice that he isn't buying cheap processed food for his main meals.

Graham, I work at sprint. One persons plan can be $100 and someone on a family plan can be super cheap. First of all protection is almost $20, second of all more lines, more money. Like rn u get three free lines when u get two so its like $20 a line and they do free phone promotions. Phone carriers always do these deals for new customers so if you wanna switch your carrier every year or two and maybe even split a plan with someone u can save good money.
@quadri874 жыл бұрын
Phone plans are so cheap because the phone itself is unlocked. Meaning that if the phone is locked, you are required to use that specific carrier with its required plan. Whereas if the phone is unlocked, you can choose any carrier you like at a desire plan. In the long run, locked phones are more expensive than unlock phones.

@@Superfireben yeah but its also nastier. I personally can't eat much of it and my girlfriends hates it so when it comes to cooking we try to cook things for both of us since its cheaper and takes less time than making different meals

I only pay $15 for my plan. It's not a deal just not unlimited data.

@@funtechu yeaaa just something he could research for example I just switched from unlimited data on verizon to xfinity mobile (uses verizon) but I'm saving like $60 a month

4:57 Mint Mobile 😁 - but the $15 plan only has 3GB 4G. I have the $20 plan with 8GB 4G (and then you get slow data after you use all that 4G, which I rarely do).

His $15.00 phone plan is probably Mint Mobile. They used to have a plan that offered unlimited minutes, text with 12gb of data for 15 bucks!!!

You could technically call it a $15 phone plan if you call your unlimited phone plan a $108 misc expense. Millennial Reasoning.
