We have a farm in NH and last year started managing our pastures for Monarch habitat by mowing the fields only once after the killing frost. This means that all the native species are growing back, especially milkweed. This summer, we have had the return of hundreds of butterflies! Success!

I just came here to say, that yesterday, I watched about 100 flying due south. Seemingly in a single file line, not perfectly, but with about 30 yards spacing between each monarch. I have never witnessed a more beautiful and rare sight!

I’m doing my part... I have several milkweed plants in my yard and have been raising and releasing monarchs every year.. my best year I’ve released over 150-175 monarchs in a year.. that being said I live in north Florida so my monarch season lasts a lot longer then northern states..and I’ve only been doing this for 3 years so far...I get so much enjoyment out of feeding the cats till they form chrysalis and watching them morph into a butterfly... they are so beautiful and I would absolutely hate if they became extinct..I have tropical milkweed mostly and all I have to do is cut it back and it continually grows year round so I can continue the cycle of raising and releasing butterflies...as of this post my milkweed has mostly regrown and I have around 10-12 first instar caterpillars I’m feeding.. and yes I know I have enough milkweed to feed them till chrysalis stage.. this is something you learn as you raise them year after year. How many caterpillars can you raise based on how much milkweed you have

@AbbyTaz
@AbbyTaz 3 жыл бұрын
ss timeisshort hi~~! I’m not sure about monarch butterflies but you can buy butterfly kits from amazon and this brand (insect lore) also does a tadpole to frog kit too if you’re interested 😊 but here is a link to the one my sister usually buys: www.amazon.com/Insect-Lore-Butterfly-Growing-Kit/dp/B00000ISC5/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=monarch+butterfly+kit+with+live+caterpillars&qid=1598223177&sprefix=monarch+butterfly+kit&sr=8-3# The caterpillars also come with their food so don’t worry about purchasing extra feed for them. Just make sure you keep any curious pets away from the kit - my cat Levi always wants to investigate anything that moves and tends to nearly knock the mesh butterfly garden over 😅

Vidhi Chandrakar I’m so happy for you! It is an unbelievable experience, and you will LOVE it! Here’s a few tips: Don’t let the butterflies come out of their cocoons over pots, this is the way that 2 of my butterflies died because they got caught in the sides of the pot, and couldn’t get out to pump their wings (which led to them not being able to fly). Try to limit how much you touch them! They are very delicate. Here’s a formula for butterfly nectar- 3 tablespoons of hot water. 1 tablespoon of raw sugar. Leave it in a small cup so the butterfly can get it, also put a cotton ball in so they can sit on it while drinking. You can tell if they are a male if they have two black dots on their wings (males also have darker orange). Females are lighter orange, don’t have the dots, and usually form faster. Don’t be afraid to ask me any questions! Hope this helped🦋 (Have fun with the monarchs btw)

Our Grandchildren have helped me raise and release the Monarch and the Eastern Black Swallowtail for the past 25yrs. The numbers of ALL butterflies seem to have decreased significantly. Twenty years ago when we would walk thru the flower garden there were so many butterflies that they would hit you in the face. There are fewer crickets, grasshoppers, night crawlers and who knows what else. The mosquito seems to be prolific.

Thank you for raising awareness. Raising Monarch catepillars to butterflies is not very difficult and quite rewarding. Two years ago, I raised over 500 to butterflies inside an enclosed patio. You don't need a lot of land but there are many predators to the Monarch.
@h2oquality2010
@h2oquality2010 5 жыл бұрын
Europa H2O Alien Not birds, but there are many insect predators that kill them: wolf spiders, assassin bugs, earwigs, wasps, lacewings, and tachnid fly. The worst are the wasps and tachnid flies. This gray and black striped fly lays it's eggs inside the catepillar and eats the catepillar or early stage chrysalis from the inside. Monarchs are lucky to find milkweed growing. I began growing them when I noticed milkweed growing in my flower garden and a Monarch catepillar eating it. He did not survive. He died from the Tachnid fly parasite. But I learned how to grow many of them after realizing how perilous their life is just getting to the chrysalis stage.
@h2oquality2010
@h2oquality2010 5 жыл бұрын
Europa H2O Alien I am specifically mentioning the Monarch catepillar stage of life before it becomes a butterfly. The Tachnid fly injects eggs into the catepillar and if more than 2 eggs are in its body, the catepillar will die before making it to chrysalis. If there's only 1 or 2 eggs, then the catepillar will make it to chrysalis, but soon die within a week as the Tachnid fly maggot eats its way out of the chrysalis and leaves a string-like trail to the ground. The other insect predator that will eat them as a catepillar or butterfly is the praying mantis. I have all these types of insects in my yard, and especially after growing milkweed, so this is from my own direct observations. I suggest you raise some monarch catepillars to butterflies and conduct your own observations. Then you will confirm what is true or not since my own observations are being dismissed.

We have a butterfly bush in our back that seems to attract the monarch butterfly every summer. We've been seeing more in the pass 2 years. Our only problem is the preying mantis he like to rip off their wing. So we move him from the butterfly bush to another tree in the back yard. We don't want to kill him because he has a job in our backyard only if he would leave the butterflies alone.
