Masterminds tells real crime stories about amazing deceptions that brilliant criminals use to pull off seemingly impossible crimes. This new half-hour series combines the mystery of a "whodunit" with the thrill of a "howdunit," revealing the extraordinary world of elite bank robbers, escape artists, impersonators, kidnappers, murderers and frauds.
Hoa Lam Ong wore an ever present grin on his face; hence the nickname “Smiley.” Police suggest the fifteen million dollars worth of goods he stole from the cargo warehouses of Toronto’s Pearson Airport gave him plenty to smile about.

Rick Timmons wrong that stuff that gets stolen in transport is insured that’s why high end company’s pay more for shipping because they have a bigger insurance on items shipped it’s when you steal from the store directly when prices go up.

It’s a relatively minor charge in Canada, 2 years is actually quite stiff. Possession of stolen property over $5000 is the same charge regardless of value beyond $5000. Most would get off on probation for a first offence, but since his was quite large and organized her got jail time instead.

@Adam Chapman well as a bank robber in Canada, if you manage to do it without any weapons and not hurting anybody, if you get caught the sentence might be rather light. @@nimaakhtarkhavari8766 look bro getting revenge/satisfaction and putting a person in prison for a long time makes you feel good sure..but does it better society in the long run ..simple answer no. So whats the point then ...well nothing. However, with rehabilitation the criminal can stop being a degenerate and go live a normal life. Consider the fact that people who were abused physically by their parent are more likely to do it to their children. If, hypothetically, they have children and get caught for abusing them what good will sending them to prison do when after their sentence they can just leave and go continue the cycle. Instead of that, then you can get help for both the abused/victim and stop the cycle. You have to kill the source of the problem not the result. Last thing is that you still can be sentenced but the longest sentence is up to 25 years like in the Netherlands.

@animeandstuff5377
@animeandstuff5377 3 жыл бұрын
@@nimaakhtarkhavari8766 lol which definition of justice wants a society with no chance of forgiveness. Plus the vast majority of crimes are caused by inequality in society and having long sentences only increases that inequality which then increases crime. Additionally most people, with or without sentences being present, dont just have the desire to commit hard core crimes like murder/rape + the safest countries in the world would be America if long sentences meant anything but both canada/norway are ranked as safer and have way lower sentences.

I worked in a warehouse at the airport and I can tell you, it's very easy to pull off something like this and not get caught. After the planes were unloaded, the cargo would be "broken down" and "located". Authorized truck drivers would come to pick up whatever they needed, they would have the proper paperwork. The problem was, the truck drivers would usually park their truck at the docks before they got their paperwork. Which would make it very easy for a warehouse worker to hop on the forklift and take a skid full of iPhones and iPads and put in the truck of the driver he's in cahoots with, it's never happened, but I thought of it and it could've gone by very smoothly without any way of them being able to pin you unless someone snitches.

Police could of install some tracing bugs randomly on some of the cargo boxes, would of turn up where they go. Wouldn't take 13 years investigation. That video is a proof of Canadian police incompetence.

What are the police going to do? Air tag or RFID chip every possible piece of high value cargo? Oh the technology for these kinds of things were in their infancy so the tech was no good. The GPS trackers from the late 1990s were the size of a small Nokia phone. Also do you know how many 1000s of pieces of cargo you would have had to tag and track. Even if you do it using 2023 technology this would be logistical nightmare to handle even if you were the US Alphabet agencies. Also the airport workers who were taking the stuff for Smiley are not stupid, they would have just grabbed all the untagged stuff or told Smiley about the tagging and then bye. And even if Smiley did not get the info about it from the airport workers, Teresa would have found it about it too. At the end of the day what you suggested would not have worked.

@@rxtuninginc8444 There was too much stuff and you would need to have the planted cargo be put their by the air cargo workers...but the thing is that which one of these guys were on Benny's pay roll.
