Broadcast (New Zealand): 17th March, 1988.
This playlist contains videos of the attack and the subsequent violence over the next few days.
The Milltown Cemetery attack (also known as the Milltown Massacre) took place on 16 March 1988 in Belfast's Milltown Cemetery. During a Provisional IRA funeral, Ulster Defence Association (UDA) member Michael Stone attacked the crowd with grenades and pistols, killing three and wounding over sixty.
As the coffins were being lowered into the ground, a burst of gunfire was heard and this was initially mistaken for the usual paramilitary firing party. Some people even applauded. However, it was not a salute. A lone Ulster Defence Association member from East Belfast named Michael Stone had infiltrated the crowd in an attempt to eliminate the republican leadership with several RGD-5 hand grenades and two handguns, a 9mm Browning Hi-Power semi-automatic pistol and a .357 Magnum revolver. Stone killed three people, including IRA member Kevin Brady, who had attempted to disarm him. The whole event was recorded by television news cameras.
Stone made his escape towards the motorway, chased by several members of the crowd, but continued firing his handguns and throwing hand grenades at his pursuers. Stone made it as far as the M1 motorway, but was caught by the crowd, who began beating him and shouting that they would kill him. He was eventually put in the back of a car and was being driven away to be shot by the IRA, when the car was intercepted by the Royal Ulster Constabulary, who arrested him and took him to Musgrave Park Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Michael Stone later confessed to the three killings at Milltown and a further three paramilitary killings committed beforehand. The final toll was three dead and upwards of sixty injured.

I'm an ex serving British soldier, served in Ireland. I went to Dublin with my ex for a weekend and went on the history tour. Fuck me, is it any wonder the Irish hate us after what our ancestors did to them. I didn't know all this as a young soldier though. War and hate are wasted emotions.

Every nations ancestors have been at some point or other guilty of wrong doing but to use history as validation for violence or murder of innocent civilians in modern day Europe is no excuse. The Brits have indeed been very harsh in the past but were men of their time. Conversely, many nations would not be where they are today were it not for us. America? Canada? The Commonwealth. (Think on that word). The indoctrinated hatred that exists in NI manifested violence that exceeded the severity of life under the Crown. The difference between us and them is that we fight with honour.. They shoot, and run away and kill each other. Vermin.

As the saying goes, "What you did, you did already. Yes, centuries of oppression by the British with good ole Oliver Cromwell, The Act of Union, confiscation of Irish land and the eradication of the native language for any conqueror is to kill their language. I know several Brits here in America and some mention the bombings on your mainland. That's most unfortunate and I don't condone violence but I understand why it happens. I've never heard one mention any remorse about what the British did in Ireland or India, etc. What amazes me more is the manner we were treated here in the United States given the influx of Irish in the nineteenth century. We were depicted as apes and not even considered white. However, we've "made it" here in the USA and it's taken us a very long time to overcome our self-esteem issues and realize just how beautiful we are and what we've contributed to this world. What amazes me about the Irish is just how hospitable they are given what they endured. For some Irish, or people of Irish descent there is still a hatred and a quiet anger for the British. Life is short and tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone. I'm not going to hate anybody because I'm not going to surrender to hate. Perhaps the Irish in Ireland just want to hear "I'm sorry". It's like the horror of what was done to indigenous people and blacks here in the United States. NOBODY likes to be mistreated and that goes for all races as the world is replete with invasions of countries. As you're aware, a horrible mess was created in Ulster. I wish you and your family well Sir.

@@OSTARAEB4 I hear that. I'd like to buy you and Dobly58 ( above) a beer a have a chat. I think what I'm saying is that when I was a young dumb squaddie in the 80's, I knew nothing about what the brits did to Irish folk way back then. I always wanted to be a soldier, set my sights ( excuse the pun) on being a soldier, and that's what I did. I can't speak for all ex squaddies, but, I suspect most were like me and didn't realise how it all started. We were just a pawn in the political game. Interesting the comment about, " Life is short and tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone", you hit the nail on the head there, please have a look at an app, web site I have developed if you have time, maybe leave me some feedback, myfarewellnote.com , this is how I feel now, this is the person I am now. We should get our priorities right, its about family and friends, and hate is a wasted emotion. I have done a lot of Motorsport in my time, especially Rallying. I've been to Ireland on a few occasions, and compete in the Belgium rally championship. You couldn't meet a more open fun loving lot than the Irish and Belgiuns , very open and accommodating. In the words of the late great Colin McRea " Your here for a good time, not a long time" and Thomas Paine " To argue with a person who has renounced the use of reason, is like feeding medicine to a dead person". The last one applies to our government , police and court system, its not fit for purpose. Best of health and happiness to you and yours, Steve

There has to have been RUC and probably British Army collusion. Michael Stone is a psychopathic murderer and obviously inept at what he does. He was armed with hand grenades, he should have been able to kill dozens if not a hundred or so. Some hold this cowardly idiot to be a hero. He was no more than a lone wolf, inept self proclaimed soldier. If he was any kind of soldier he’d have done a better job. The thing is, that you just didn’t do that. Funerals were traditionally and in an unspoken understanding off limits. This was one of the most cowardly acts of the whole troubles. He’s a mad man and he’s back in Prison where he deserves to be and will remain until his death.

That's absolutely crap and you know it. Is it that l the British have big houses and tax free living! No, like I said the truth is the south don't want the north...Why the hell would it? The UK is paying for everything. Why would Dublin want to take that on. Stop blaming the British and start looking at the real reason . And I'll say it again the south doesn't want the north. Let's get some things straight. Republicans were that day burying the bodies of IRA terrorists shot for planning to bomb and kill British soldiers and civilians in Gibraltar. Amongst the crowd of mourners were many IRA murderers and high profile legitimate targets. It is pathetic to laud and lionise murderers on your own side, but be indignant that your enemy should try to kill those murderers you praise. Michael Stones friends and neighbours had been murdered by IRA terrorists. That day he bravely took the fight to a huge crowd of IRA and fought against them on his own. He was defending his people and taking the fight right to the terrorists. I don't condone what he did, but I understand his motives. He was a brave loyalist volunteer and defender of communities preyed upon by IRA murderers. They don't like the taste of their own medicine.

Taken out anytime? Perhaps that's why lonly 4% of loyalist victims were republican activists (even with mi5 handing them details willy-nilly) - the rest were taxi drivers and kids returning home from a night out. The provos, on the other hand, had a much higher ratio of killing their declared enemy. They drove massive bombs the length of Britain - which killed a damn sight less casualties than british bombs dropped from remote controlled drones on innocent civilians, or the droves of civilians being killed in Yemen with weapons Britain knowinly provides. The provos also killed several leading politicians, blew thatcher and her shower of bastards from their beds, mortared downing street, and inflicted the greatest daily loss on british troops since ww2 - in response to the paras cowardly slaughter of unarmed civilians. They put manners on them. Go compare.

Meanwhile, the Unionist majority at Stormont is no more and idiots like Stone, and yourself, will be the minority here within 5 years. Removing the butchers apron from City Hall was only the start. Attacking mourners at funerals, how brave! Then again, chasing a teenage girl from a taxi and shooting her dead, a la Billy Hutchinson, makes you a hero in the loyalist world.

I would also like to point out that the only men in the whole of the troubles that I believe were truly heroic and maintained their dignity to the end, were Bobby Sands and the other hunger strikers. They did more to terrify Thatcher than any bombs or guns could have. She could fight bombs and guns with British Army bombs and guns, but she was utterly defenceless against the dignity and incredible heroism of Sands and his friends. I've read that she lost sleep over the hunger strikes and was very troubled by them because she knew here was a battle she could never win. If there is peace in NI today it is in very large part thanks to those heroic hunger strikers.
