I'm a retired experimental aero engine tool fitter. After being found to hate all the machining jobs they wanted me to do, I ended up working on burner development for military and civilian engines, including Phantom Spey and RB211. I designed the assembly jigs for the the first of the new RB211 burners. They were ridiculously complicated. It didn't help that I took over from an old boy who left no notes, but was in failing health. So I started again from scratch. I swear I've forgotten more than I knew back then. Everything went to Parker Hannifin after I left. That was 1980. Indeed, it was not until Allen reminded me, and made it sound and look so easy, that I remembered just what's involved. It's all about the planning, careful measuring (I listed progressive measurements in columns on graph paper! Eventually I had the JESUS copy), crazy tolerances, very precise jigs and those last precision cuts. With the right equipment, every task can be achieved if broken down into manageable parts. But it's his imagination and instinct for very high precision that really sets Allen apart. I want to build a specific very special engine which I know hasn't been done yet (it won't be straightforward), but I daren't even mention it here, because Allen will just root around in his shed and put one together before I even get my new workshop built! Actually, I'm wary of even thinking about it whilst connected to the internet...!!;)
