I bought a Miltec Recom 1 man tent with the intention of doing a bit of stealth camping in the future. I've heard they are quite long. Being 6'5'' I really hope so. I was quite surprised.

I'm 6'3" and found this tent to be perfect length. I lived in it for nearly 2 months Aug/Sept on hiking trails and I have also tested it out winter camping. It kept up well in the abuse, not a single tear. It truly is a perfect camo for Canadian forests. I had stealth camped with no problems in small patches of forest in the middle of city parks and felt pretty invisible. The tent gets good ventilation and was absolutely perfect in the hot summer months, but as for my winter experience it was rather cold even with my sleeping bag rated at -30c and thermal clothes. It was a -15c degree night and I certainly did not sleep very much! If i had a thermal sleeping mat maybe it would have been doable. I would say that it is not suitable for winter, but very well suited for the summer. It keeps dry nicely in the rain, protecting your stinky hiking boots kept outside of the inner parts of the tent but covered by the rain fly. The only drawback, is that in more intense rainfalls water can start to pool in the triangle shaped top and leak through, but only after considerable time. Some water-proofing spray will certainly fix that drawback if your looking to camp in a rainstorm, or simply put a stick across it under the rainfly. All in all its a great tent and I plan on buying it again.

God I wish I had the time to go hiking like that. Lengthwise it is amazing for us tall fellas.

It s cheap. but a king size tent for stealth camping. Add a camouflage net and you're pretty much invisible. The round shape has a positive effect on invisibility. No corners
@robtherover3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching it Jens. That's just what I plan to do. I did a little video on the camo net I intend to use with it, when I get the time. It's so big I could wrap it round the Mil-Tec a couple of times. I'm gonna test the set up in my garden soon. My garden is about 10 feet by 8. Should be a good test for the combo.

Looks good for stealth. Not that small packed up. The question is always whether a two person tent would be noticeably bigger.
@robtherover3 жыл бұрын
It’s not very wide and not very high. The sort of tent you get in when you’re ready to sleep. Width wise I think it is a lot smaller than most two person tents. Length wise it’s amazing.

It's a really nice design on this tent, kind of a shame it's such a low-range material spec. Imagine aluminium poles, a good, nylon flysheet (and a bit bigger so it actually covers the inner fully) and 6 guy line points - this tent would be the perfect hardcore trekking tent.
@robtherover3 жыл бұрын
I like this tent. But like you say the materials could be better.
@tiddybearkush2 жыл бұрын
I have this tent with aluminum poles. Wechsel is a tent manufacturer that have this tent made with a bit better material. It is called "pathfinder". It's about 2.2kg but can lose weight by removing unnecessary stuff down to 1.86kg. It would be great if it could be made with higher head room and lighter materials. It's literally the best design ever. It's so easy and fast to pitch and finding a pitch spot is super easy because of the profile and because it can be lifted seen it's self standing.
@fiskmasadventures2 жыл бұрын
@@tiddybearkush That sounds really interesting, I think I need to take a look at that! And yes, imagine the same tent with just 10-15 cm higher headroom and maybe 20 cm wider sleeping area, what a beauty it would be!

I have just got one, i dont think its genuine nato or miliary but a copy. Not used it yet, but have assembled manlin structure in the house. Looks good tbe sack would be better if a top loader. But is quite large. The fabric is very light however poles make it very heavy to cary. Will try it out in the next week or two. See how it works propely.

Hi. Just watched a guy walk from JOG to Lands End using this tent. It took him 2 months. His poles broke and its not waterproof, plus its heavy. Plus points are: its good for stealth and you can set it up on hard standing. Shame because it's a good design.
@robtherover3 жыл бұрын
It is quite heavy considering it’s size. Maybe if it’s combined with a tarp it would be good. I know you have to be careful with the poles. They’re only fibreglass. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the sub. I’ve subbed you back. It’s a great little tent and would be perfect for stealth camping. Very low profile. Wish I had more opportunities to get out in it. Maybe when the summer holidays start I’ll get more chances. It’s not so easy working in a school and rehearsal studios at the weekend.

@WiltshireMan3 жыл бұрын
Just watch those fibreglass poles Rob. They snap real easy. Mine broke. The tent is a great design, wonderful for a stealthy overnight camp but the materials let the tent down in my opinion
@robtherover3 жыл бұрын
I was very careful with the poles because I watched your video on the Miltec. It's the length of it that got my attention. Something low profile that a bloke of my height might actually fit into, and I did surprisingly. Out of curiosity, did your Miltec end up in a landfill?
@WiltshireMan3 жыл бұрын
@@robtherover Yes Rob, it did unfortunately. I was unable to get replacement poles and also the ground sheet started to leak. The ground sheet looked like some sort of woven fabric. It's a real shame as the design of the tent is really good, just the materials let it down. If they were to up grade the poles and fabric I'd happily buy another even if it was twice the price. They are great for stealth camping and also high winds.
