Adjusting the clutch inside the primary on the Milwaukee Eight Softail. You only need a few tools and the process is straightforward. You can also check your primary fluid level while you've got the derby cover off. I'm adjusting the clutch on my Street Bob FXBB, and I give you a few tips and also provide the details for the Milwaukee 8 clutch adjustment range and torque specs. If you just need to set the free-play on your clutch lever, you can check out my other video on that process ( • Milwaukee 8 Upper Clut... ).

So I have a bad experience to report about this... I did this exactly as your video described, and I double checked the manual before going to adjust the clutch. Did the half turn out, based on our previous discussion. Really wanted to get the bike more fit to me. While on my little test ride to get back to the parking lot, my clutch popped lose and left my bike stuck in gear in the middle of the street. A random guy on the street and me were not able to move the bike at all. I had to run home, grab tools, and dash back all while a stranger volunteered to direct cars around my bike as it sat there flashing hazards. I'm not sure wtf happened. I managed to get back to the bike, pop the derby cover and managed to get the adjustment in enough that i could get the bike into neutral and off the street. I just spun the adjuster screw until all the freeplay in the lever was taken up after the clutch popped. I'm so glad it happened next to home instead of on the freeway or something and caused an accident.

Hey Ronnie - thanks for the kind words! Does his clutch disengage at all, or does he only have lever movement? I'm wondering if the upper clutch cable was somehow disconnected down at the yellow adjuster near the left-front frame down tube. But if that was the case there would be no clutch disengagement at all. Assuming it's still connected, it would also be worth doing a quick free-play adjustment using that adjuster. You can see that process here - it's super simple: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJmvmXeegNGVl5o Let me know what you find out! Just subscribed, wish I would have found you earlier. Put 13 inch handlebars on and extension cable because clutch cable would not reach. I had to jury rig some other adjustments to make sure the correct amount of slack was taken up. Here is my issue now; if I release all the tension on my clutch cable, I get so much free play that the lever will have no pull at all. Therefore I can not do the "pull in clutch lever three times" after initial adjustment. Should I put some tension on the cable so I am able to perform that part of the adjustment?
@RonsWorkshop
@RonsWorkshop 2 жыл бұрын
Hey PJ _ D - thanks for the kind words! That might be worth trying but I don’t know that the step we’re talking about is critical. In my case it only moved the clutch hub a little bit when I did the three pulls. If you have to pick one or the other, I’d go with the cable setting that lets you get proper free-play after adjusting down at the hub. Let me know how it goes! I have an updated video as well, and it includes friction zone info for the adjustment range: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp-nZ6WkfMtopas And if you want a sticker send me a DM on Telegram, Instagram or Signal with the mailing info @RonsWorkshop

@@RonsWorkshop Thanks for the reply. One thing I noticed about having the extension and the adjustment; when I adjust for free play at the ferrule next to the hand lever, I can tug on it and it comes out a little over 1/8 inch. However, the handle is still tough to pull and the friction zone is almost all the way at the end of the handle when releases. I discovered that with the "longer" cable, there is pressure against the handle where the ferrule is. Therefore tugging on the cable gives a false "reading". I had to back off the adjuster so I would get some free play in the handle. Works much better now.

@RonsWorkshop
@RonsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Hey Crispr Talk - hmmm it’s probably worth trying. It’s easy enough to do so you could rule that out if it didn’t fix it. But it sounds like there could be something going on with the tranny itself. I’d expect the clutch adjustment to cause issues with disengagement but not necessarily the problem you described. But I’m not an expert! Let me know if you give it a try, and how it goes.

Hey Calvin - maybe try loosening everything, then back that adjuster screw way out so it’s obviously not touching, then try running it down until it just touches. Maybe that will reset your baseline and from there you can back it off based on the setting you want to try. Let me know how it goes!

Is this the same way to adjust clutch on a 2021 touring?
@RonsWorkshop

Hey Jason - I don’t know for sure, but from what I’ve seen this is a pretty standard HD adjustment procedure. But it would be good to check a manual to be sure. Let me know if you give it a try and how it goes!

So where does the clutch cable connect inside? I couldn't see that. My clutch cable disconnected inside it was total free play. I called for my first service at 500 miles but they said it wasn't until 1000 miles. I have 1200 miles on my new 2021 Street Bob 114 FXBBS and just finished a group ride and parked it for a few. When i went to leave and started it and grabbed the clutch there was zero tension and the handle was just free play. I had it towed from the park. I couldn't get a clear answer from the dealer but they said the clutch needed to be adjusted then another time they said it needed its first adjustment after cable stretch and the clip and spring came off inside the clutch housing. I am wondering how the hell the retaining clip could come off inside the clutch. Sounds like a major safety issue. Imagine if i was riding when this happened.

Hey Victor - there is a coupler down on the frame that connects the upper clutch cable to the lower clutch cable. Then the lower clutch cable runs over to the right side of the bike and goes into the transmission side cover. You could start by inspecting that coupler down on the frame to see if it’s disconnected there. That’s an easy one. Let me know what you find!

@@RonsWorkshop The cable was completely free moving and i felt it moving inside all the way up to the case. It was disconnected inside. They said because it stretched but i just finished riding and it seemed fine up until is gave way when i was about to ride again. I'd figure the spring and clip inside would have been harder to fall off than that.

I followed these steps, but when I went to put the red clip back in the cable adjuster seems to have to much cable length. And I can’t get my lever to be tight it’s all sloppy
@RonsWorkshop

The spring on the yellow plastic sleeve should take up the slack when the red clip is removed. Make sure nothing else is binding the cable.

@@RonsWorkshop yeah the cable was binding up in the triple trees. I tried freeing it once but I tried again and everything went together and I readjusted. Thanks!!

You didn't mention temperature in the video at all. The bike needs to be at "room temperature" to make this adjustment as the rod will grow in length when the bike is hot.

Hey mR_Redd.exe - I actually did mention that and show it on the screen at this point in the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5fQdmh6a9aro6c But that’s definitely a critical requirement!!

Hey Robert - it looks like the Harley part number for the little red clip is 37200395A. Maybe see if your local dealer has one - I’d suspect that to be the problem and not the other part of the mechanism, but that’s just a guess. Let me know how it goes!

Hey wolco003 - I just double-checked and my derby cover bolts are T25. 2019 Street Bob FXBB. Maybe different on some of the other models? Be sure to check out the new version of this video for more info on how the min and max settings affect clutch engagement and friction zone: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rp-nZ6WkfMtopas

@@RonsWorkshop I watched it, thanks! My 2006 FLSTN and my new 2021 FLTRX are both T27. And the New Road Glide has the rubber gasket in the derby cover rather than on the primary...and some seriously crappy fasteners. Came with a terrible adjustment from the factory and the auto cable adjuster does not work well, I think because the cable is routed a bit tight to the right side with the adjuster right next to the exhaust. Im a 3/4 turn guy. Thanks for your videos!

@@RonsWorkshop I just looked up the part and your bike is not included. " Fits '06-'17 Dyna, '08-'18 Softail (except FLSB) and '08-later Touring and Trike models." Just mention in case others might worry. Reviews also mention crappy steel. No problem with my old bike but may have been replaced. Thanks again!

Hey J - yeah, if the clutch is adjusted within spec and not excessively worn, the spring adjuster in the upper cable should take up the free-play.
