Exactly! I see most parents just give their phone. Or ipad or whatever just so they will leave them alone and forget. then something happens. Oh all of a sudden fingers start pointing forward while 4 other fingers pointing back at them. Start with being a parent first. Spend time with them. Show them attention. Find out what they want in life, goals, dreams, show them how to play outside, be kids. I don’t think its tik toks fault.

@@jamimarie6117 just like with cable tv there are computer, phone and tablet child locks to prevent children from using or viewing dangerous or adult content or using certain media platforms and since most of social media platforms were created with the idea of using for adult content, if the child locks are in place they can’t access those platforms. So most parents opts not to use those child locks. This all could have been prevented. However parents will not hold themselves accountable, they will instead blame the platforms for their own negligence.

This “challenge” has been going on way before social media became a thing. I remember my older cousin was the one showing all of us other kids. Before me was my other cousin, and he ended up having a concussion because his head hit the concrete, and now he’s a little slow on mental development. I know kids used to be peer pressured into playing it on the playgrounds during recess. Once the school found out, they announced a mandatory morning assembly for the parents and all of the kids, to talk about peer pressure and safety on the playground. Condolences to the family, and Im truly sorry it took a tragedy of their young daughter’s life, to realize the dangerous influences of social media.

I'm really wondering why people allow their children to go on these apps unsupervised. Going on these apps exposes your child to so many dangerous things and people. You would never take your child to a strange city, drop them off and let them roam around without you, being on these social media apps are pretty much the same as that. I feel bad for this family but they are just as much to blame as anyone else. My young niece stayed with me for almost a year because her parents were traveling nurses during covid. Accusing these parents of "letting social media raise their kids" is a heck of a jump. Any sane, healthy society makes sure the whole environment is safe for children, so there's no need for parental hypervigilance. We're not made to deal with this kind of relentlessly hostile environment, where kids have to be monitored and defended from accidental exposure to damaging material almost everywhere you turn, 24/7; it's no wonder mental health is going downhill so rapidly. It's like society is purposefully creating an environment designed to destroy children.

Yes, it’s definitely up to the parents to watch what their children do online and off, but you can’t always blame social media. I’m 40, and when I was in middle school, my friends, brother, and I used to do this. Thank god none of us got hurt, but not having social media doesn’t mean children won’t hear about it somewhere else and want to try it since obviously there was no social media back in the early 90’s and we heard about the trend

@@KuromigirI I appreciate your input and opinion, however, assuming your mother has good intentions, I think you should be thankful you have a mother that cares about you. Some of us don’t. Be thankful she is involved with you. Someday when you’re a parent you will have the same feelings of worry and you will understand where she is coming from. There are different levels of monitoring your child, I’m not sure the level at which your mother is monitoring you when she checks your screen, but it can depend greatly on the age of the child. It’s not always about the parent not trusting the child, it’s about the things the child is seeing online and it’s about the people on the other side of the screen being predators and getting through to the child no matter how smart the child may seem. It works because they are good at what they do. Im not sure your age but be safe and the more you show your mom you can be trusted and once that trust is built, she may be able to leave you to it on your own. Also, monitor doesn’t mean being a helicopter parent, but parents should know what their kid has access to. If they choose to let their 7-8-9+ year olds use social media then yes, they should pay attention to who they are friends with and who they are talking to. If they have friends from school added and they are talking to them online and if the parent trusts these conversations then they don’t need to read their messages, but if the child is showing they can’t be trusted or starts deleting things and hiding things then that’s for their parents to gauge that situation… I don’t have advice for that, I’m only here to say stay safe in regards to what I watched in this video…If parents see their kids are talking to strangers, or viewing things they shouldn’t be then yes there should be some kind of filtering. It would be the same if I saw my child talking to a stranger on the street vs talking to a friend from school. As for teens, the level of monitoring is different from younger children, because teens are becoming adults and they are entitled to some level of privacy at some point… It depends on the relationship they have with their parents and the level of trust they have built together. As a person who had my parents not monitoring me online, I would never want that for my kids. Again, I greatly appreciate your input. I stand by my opinion and this was not meant to ruin anything for anyone. I was only replying to the video and want everyone to just be aware and use their judgment as a parent. This is so unfortunate. I'm so sorry these parents have lost their children so young. This is why it's important to monitor children on the internet like you would do in the park or a store. There's so many sick things and people on the internet. I also believe TikTok has a minimum age of 13. Kids this young aren't always fully capable of understanding certain things because their brains aren't developed enough. Please monitor your children, you do not want to walk in these parents shoes. The child's wearing makeup, highly sexualized clothing and poses are very inappropriate and are also bound to attract the very wrong kind of attention from perverts and pedophiles out there on the internet. Also, The corporations behind apps like TikTok have zero conscience and will put absolutely anything on line to bait a child into participating in all sorts of nefarious and dangerous activities. Adults and children don't understand how vulnerable they are on the internet, do not recognize danger. It seems to interfere with situational awareness, leading to a false sense of security. The worst thing you can do is to turn your child loose with an unfiltered smartphone and allow it to babysit and entertain your child for hours on end. Then we wonder why things go very badly with parents and children profoundly lacking judgement and making decisions that result in tragic consequences for all

And they are right, this IS a big warning…for all parents who DON’T monitor young children on smart phones or tablets, etc. NO child should be on social media, PERIOD. And even allowing them to view social media platforms while being “supervised” by an adult, the damage is already done, because now their interest has been piqued…And kids being kids, will find a way to get on unsupervised devices…and once you open that Pandora’s Box, there’s no going back. Too many young kids with smart phones, etc., sort of like the new babysitter. As a 90's kid, i can tell that this challenges existed even before social media was this big, my parents when they saw this types of challenges had a serious talk with me, explained me about the risks and consequences of doing certain things. Now that social media is this big and influential even in children, i think is the moment for parents to talk about this with their children since young age, and remember them now and then. This challenges will still exist, as have existed for many years, new ones will be created risking the kids safety. The parents should always be aware of what their kids are watching, but it's impossible for them to keep up with every existing challenge.

This challenge has existed since before TikTok. I remember reading about it back in 2007. Restricting internet/social media usage alone isn’t going to protect your kids. Parents need to be talking to their kids about not doing dangerous things like this.

I thank God that she said Mommy I'm not into everything that I see that's on tiktok or social media and I praise God that she's not a follower she's a leader. I'm glad you went in to check on your child! But remember she is only 11yrs old. Don't put the decision of her vetting out what she will follow and not follow. Sometimes even as adults we get scammed or played and think to ourselves how in the heck did that happen if I'm a grown experienced adult?! Perception will never be truth. So sometimes something may seem or appear real, but it's not. Your child doesn't have the experience to make that decision yet. These are dangerous and Satanic times were living. And there's alot of fools gold out there.

TikTok didn't frame a picture of a 9 year old girl in full make-up, low rise jeans, a mid drift top, and Ariana Grande hair while striking an adult pose for the camera . I cannot comprehend what pain they are going through but somebody allowed her access to social media without supervision. R.I.P. little one.

This is heartbreaking, truly, but we can’t blame social media. It is up to parents to monitor what our children are viewing, and this “trend” has existed for decades. Kids were doing this when I was in school 20 years ago, long before social media existed. My friend Alisa suffered brain damage doing this at a sleep over in 2001. Yes, videos of dangerous trends should be taken down but we can’t blame social media for this as though it is the only safety net between our children and danger. Stuff slips through the cracks of community guidelines and restrictions, which is why it is our responsibility as parents to not only monitor what our children watch, but to talk to them about the dangers of the world. At 9 years old, she wasn’t supposed to even be on TikTok, so legally they don’t have a leg to stand on. I’m in no way blaming the parents, this is a tragedy; blaming TikTok however seems extremely misguided.

@@DurgaUsagi you're my parenting inspiration for that! I'd rather my children be mad at me when they're young and actually get to experience being a kid and be more mentally stable as adults. That's the problem with many people / parents. They want the instant gratification of giving in to everything they want and acting more like a "friend" so they can feel like their kid likes them and thinks they're a cool parent and there's no conflict. Parenting is not about being liked or always understood by your children! It's first and foremost about trying to teach them from right and wrong. You ever see the movie the cable guy? It's like that with social media, truly scary stuff.

when i was in high school, a classmate and acquaintance of mine passed away after participating in the same thing, he was 16 years old. i think it was most commonly referred to as the "choking game" back then, and it was used as a way to get high. unfortunately, he did it while he was alone and nobody discovered him until it was far too late. i'll never forget attending his wake & funeral with so many of our mutual friends and classmates. he was a talented kid, could play multiple instruments and was one of the funniest dudes in our band class, wish i'd had the chance to get to know him better. i'm sad to see that this "game" is still being participated in, and now it's a trend on tiktok? rest in peace to nick, to little ariani, and every one else who has passed because of this.
