I’m afraid I ignored your final words of “don’t do this if you don’t know exactly what you’re doing”. I followed the rest of your advice but used a MOV with part number 10N471K. Your explanation was absolutely excellent and I even felt that I was starting to understand how the power supply worked. I plugged it in and appear to have fully charged an empty battery without any explosions or flames. The MOV I used is the same physical size as the original, a fair bit smaller than yours. I assume it’s ok. I’m only one charge in but will monitor very closely while using for a bit. I’m very happy and very grateful, thank you!

It looks like they've revised the design to a way simpler board in the charger you have, compared to some other charger teardown I have seen. Do you think it would be possible to bypass the AC to DC power supply side of the board and have a DC input? I haven't yet measured my charger to see what the DC side runs at voltage-wise.

QUESTION: After this Charger is Converted to 220v, is the Charger Still Usable with a 110v Input.?
@NathanNostaw
@NathanNostaw 8 ай бұрын
I know this is an old video, but to anyone reading this, is there a way to patch in a 12vDC feed to convert this charger to run either off AC, or 12v? All the car charger units use 5vusb and that is just crazy slow and inefficient. Why convert 12v to 5v to charge 12v? Daft.

Will the conversation makes it a dual voltage charger? Or only 220v so that 110v cannot work anymore?
@loneoceans
@loneoceans Жыл бұрын
No, the conversion does not make it into a dual voltage charger. It is possible to add a properly rated switch to toggle between the two input voltages, but one must be aware of the safety implications.

Would it now work on both 120v and 240v AC input power?
@loneoceans
@loneoceans 8 ай бұрын
Would not recommend to do so, though it may work. After the modification, the input voltage to the DC/DC converter will be half of what is intended. Given that the converter is a step-down, depending on how it is designed, it may still function but may result in unexpected results.

If the 120V unmod unit was plug into 240V power, what will it does? does it just damage the 175VAC MOV only or will it damage more beyond? Since the unmod unit is not cute at the bridge. Also what if replaced the 300VAC MOV but not cutting the bridge, what will it does.........Just curious?
@piratsik7691
@piratsik7691 2 жыл бұрын
I just repaired one that was 120V and plugged into 240V. The MOV was not damaged. The Fuse(F1), one of the capacitors(C3) and two of the diodes in the rectifier were blown(D103,D104). If you do not cut the bridge between the capacitors, you're going to exceed the capacitors' rating and blow them up.

@piratsik7691
@piratsik7691 2 жыл бұрын
@@TITAN9389 You can check with a multimeter on diode mode. Better desolder one side of each diode you test so the rest of the circuit does not affect your readings. If the diode is good, one side has a small voltage drop (reading maybe 0.6-1V) and the other does not conduct(reading 0L). If it's bad, it will either be open(0L on both sides) or shorted(~0V on both sides).

Awesome video, by far the best out there. Very well explained not just this what you do, but this is what this does. Could you please send me your email address, I have a question regarding the easiest way to convert a Milwaukee 12v charger or 18v and 12v into a British building site charger (here on building sites we use 110v on a yellow commando plug) at first I thought easy change the plug with an American 110v charger put that doesn't change the fact here we use 50Hz not 60Hz. Any help please
@loneoceans
@loneoceans 2 жыл бұрын
Andy, thanks for your comments. The line frequency (50Hz or 60Hz) shouldn't affect the operation of the charger since it is rectified into DC anyway. However, I can't speak for other chargers other than this exact model, since other models may have different designs internally.
@andyglass3882
@andyglass3882 2 жыл бұрын
Huge thanks for your prompt reply, you are a true gentleman. Am I right in thinking that as long as the charger has a rectifier in it, the input frequency shouldn't matter because it gets changed to DC? Is that right? Or have I misunderstood? Many thanks Andy
