Watching this video, I have a screw question for you. On the E46 Reinforcement plate that you removed the screws on, what's your opinion on replacing these bolts? BMW says "Reinforcement plate to front axle support/engine support", E46 / excluding all-wheel drive vehicles, E85, E86 Replace screws Jointing torque 59 Nm Angle of rotation 90 °" vehicle. In the past I wasn't aware of this & just reused them. Your opinion please....
@50sKid3 жыл бұрын
I’ve never replaced them. I remove them way too often to afford that. And I don’t even torque them using the 90 deg angle and all that. I just make ‘em tight.
@50sKid3 жыл бұрын
To further comment on this. When you see a torque spec that includes an angle at the end that tells you to replace the bolt, the reason they do that is because they are torque to yield bolts. They are designed to stretch and deform when properly torqued and thus if they are removed and reused, they will not have the same clamping force when retorqued because they have stretched a bit. I supposed they’d need to be tightened a bit more to have the same clamping force and you keep going down that path until the bolt snaps. So I just make them tight and they’ve never loosened up on me. I do wonder if they’ve really stretched or not. I suppose the “safest” way to go would be to replace them with normal, non torque to yield bolts, and torque to the normal recommended spec for that thickness of bolt.

@@50sKid thanks...that's what I've been doing. I appreciate your reply.

Personally, I think it's more important to replace the four subframe to frame bolts whenever you take down the subframe for something like an oil pan gasket. Purely as a service consideration, I find those long bolts are more likely to cause trouble than the shorter reinforcement plate bolts and replacing them can avoid major problems.

@@herrbrahms You're right -- I eventually had problems with mine because I failed to clean some surface rust off them.

Impressive tool. I have that "old" medium torque 1/2". Happy with it.

Little risky doing that test! I had a snapped bolt in my hub. Luckily we were able to take the rotor off and weld a nut to the remnant of the bolt and wind it out.

Great if you already on the M18 platform and not on the M12 platform. Running a m18 CP 2.0 gives you less power than running a CP 3.0 or XC 5.0. Running with a CP 2.0 I would say is equivalent to running the M12 Stubby with a 2.0 battery. At which point M12 stubby is better do to smaller size profile and weight.

They do, that wasn’t a torque stick that I was using on the torque wrench, that was just a normal socket that looks a little funny. It’s Japanese

How does this compare power wise to the m12?
@50sKid3 жыл бұрын
They are rated the same. Not having a testing rig, I can’t tell if one is a little more powerful than the other, but it “seems” that way
@Equinoxious3423 жыл бұрын
Taking bolts off the aluminium brace isn't a good thing to do - it's a structural brace and the bolts should be torqued beyond yield meaning they have to be replaced every time they are undone. They're not cheap either. Check Bentley for details.
