Video clips from the 2011 season showing horses and riders having a bad day (or "goin' through hell"!). Video by MovingImagesNW and from a variety of events from the year. PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING: Use the old adage - if you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all. These brief clips are only moments in time and do not give you, the viewer, the whole story. Some of these events are recognized events, but most of the bloopers here are from schooling shows - so give a little grace to the horse and rider as they are probably learning the sport or moving up a division/level. There could be a variety of reasons why the horse refused the jump or the rider fell off and making a snap judgement about the moment will not be tolerated. MovingImagesNW reserves the right to delete such comments. Please enjoy this montage and smile, because as horse riders, we've all been here and know exactly the frustration and challenge that comes with riding and showing horses. Song featured is not owned by MINW.

I don't know if it's just me, but I find these kinds of videos strangely comforting. Like, it reminds me that if you have a bad fall, you can get back up (unless you break something, then good luck with that).

As long as everyone (horse and rider) was okay, we always joked with each other about it, it is a part of the sport. We have good days and "hellish" days, but we learn every time we ride.

I broke my leg in three places from an "assisted dismount" and the worst part of it was I was just sitting on my horse's back talking to my trainer after we just completed a finals prep course at home. He was not a bucker, but Mr. Bombproof was not having any of a giant fly messing around in his nether region. If I had known it was there, I would have gladly dismounted on my own and killed the offender (was so big it should have had its own landing gear). I landed on my feet, but one foot planted and I still had so much momentum - I ended up with an open compound tib/fib and a spiral - and well that was that - ambulance and two surgeries for me. But, there was no deterring me from riding even though I was in my 30's when it happened and I started riding as an adult. If you can swing two pairs of tall boots, get a second pair - having mine on kept me from having more damage because they kept everything in place (sorry if that freaks anyone out).

Cute video. Proves horses are smarter than us most of the time: 99% of these were caused by the rider being off balance, the horse feeling it and refusing, probably sparing the riders and themselves even nastier falls...

Same reason there are not 50 year old professional football players, yet there are 50 year old professional golfers. Those 30 year old jumpers are probably teaching tons of young, aspiring equestrians over trot poles and caveletti and happy as can be.

so most of these riders look like they made an honest mistake which is completely normal and expected. But is it just me or do some of these riders seem to be riding at a level they shouldn’t be? Maybe its just me, but if you’re pumping your body and horse to a distance thats not there, maybe you should move down a level and get more accurate?

@JustElly
@JustElly 9 жыл бұрын
I am around jumping horse pretty often there is no need for yanking like that. my friend has a hothead warmblood and jumps her from time to time. That mare has the tendancy to make the strangest leaps if you don't help and correct. Sure there are horses who move they're mouths reall easy. And you have to help and correct the horses where they fly off and will misscalculate but a few of these riders are simply hitting the bit on the jaw that has nothing to do with helping or correcting thats simply yanking the bit. That is not the way to help the horse.

Heavens there was some good 'dismounts' in this video. No offence intended but it seems to be a new thing with riders not 'ride' to their jumps, it's like they all wait to see what will happen before they react to the situation. And I don't mean just these riders, I was at a comp last weekend and it was happening there to.

most of these errors are due to the rider in most cases if the rider had just sat quietly in the saddle in the 2 point seat looking straight ahead (or in the direction of their next jump) holding on to the mane as well (just in case you do have a boo boo at least you wont pull your steed in the mouth ) most of these mishaps would not have happened...

This is an everyday type situation that you see at some of the lower and training levels of cross country riding. The horses aren't as experienced and neither are the riders. In almost every case it's a lack of forward momentum and most of it here is caused by the rider anticipating the jump and getting ahead of the horse. Cross country riders generally do better riding with a more upright or even behind the upright posture. This frees the horses front end to lift over a fence and requires the rider to release more with their arms to prevent pulling at the horses mouth. In the upper levels you will see riders sitting forward more but on more experienced horses that have a steady, forward pace. This is a learning type situation and there is a learning curve as you don't always get the opportunity to practice on a course you might event on, so it requires the building of confidence for both horse and rider. A lot of these pairs are just learning so it is unfair to compare them to such combinations as you might see at a three star event. Tricks are cute and funny to watch but have no real place in the training of equine athletes. Trick horses can perform tricks but don't always do well under saddle or showing because the tricks are learned as separate entities and not as a piece of a whole. The horses and riders in this video are training and learning how to become a single unit that will be able to negotiate a technical series of obstacles and cross train through different disciplines, combining dressage to create fluid, forward and steady gaits through relaxation; cross country teaches courage. trust and power by asking the pair to face a jumping course they may not have seen before and stadium jumping teaches precision and control, agility and flexibility. Instead of passing judgement, perhaps offer respect for the willingness of these young riders to learn and better themselves through that learning. Good luck all!

Most of the horses look like 'schoolteacher' types and most were matched very well to beginner riders. But even an old saint is going to misbehave now and again. If you are such an expert, gwydirpark, why don't you post your own videos, where you never make a mistake and all your horses are perfect every second of every ride. Show us all how it's done.

I think its weird how a lot of people stand up and look ashamed or embarrassed that they came off, then there is me who gets up puts my hands on my hips and shouts out "What was that for Tuppence." I know a lot of it may be shock and adrenaline, but I've always gotten up and watched the horse and said something along the lines of "Really? Really? You jumped that earlier!" or "So was that planned or what." Just makes the situation feel diffused to me. Anyone else do this?

@MovingImagesNW
@MovingImagesNW 8 жыл бұрын
+Relax in Time Every event "field" is fenced at the very least on the perimeter of the property. Several events consist of several fenced fields. Gates are always a good place to slow down and catch a loose horse. Most loose horses head back to the stabling area where their stablemates are. Horses are herd animals and when looking for comfort, they usually head for the herd.

if there is no fence most horses don't really run too far away. They mostly run because something spooked them. so when they feel out of dangers way they'll stop and wait for the owner.. depending on how well trained the horse is of course.

Some of these horses are doing their best whilst being impeded by unfit riders that do not have the stamina nor core strength to maintain an independent seat. I think riders do not put enough emphasis on their own nutrition and exercise, get tired and ask for disasters to happen by pissing off their mount day after day. That said there were also some unluckies in there! Scary fence judges had the coloured pony lol

That horse in the beginning dumped his rider at the water jump (6 or so jumps ahead of the jumps featured in this clip) and took off back to the barn. What I love about him is that he jumped a jump (albeit not in the correct direction!) all on his own! Silly horse!

its true especially since it is usually the riders fault, not the horses. recently i jumped my horse in a show for the 1st time & the jumps had stripes on them which he was completely petrified of cause he can't see very well & the 1st time he refused but the 2nd time i just told him it was ok and believed with every muscle in my body he was going to go over it and he did. after that he wasn't afraid anymore. just proves if the quote "If you throw your heart over a jump, your horse will follow."

Ive fallen off like a kajillion times but we've never got it on tape :( lol but my horse is terrified of any jump that had anything on it, even stripes on the poles, and i am going to take lessons and maybe even show him at this place i used to ride at because they've got really crazy jumps and i want to get him used to those so im gonna make sure somebody videos every lesson because something is bound to happen :P

Why on earth do (most of) these people even try to jump their horses? They don´t even seem to have the basics down .... No feelings for their partners at all, most of the time you can forcast that the horse isn´t going to jump but instead of leaning back giving a half halt they all lean forward and throw away their reins :D Well done! THX for letting us have a great time watching it ^^

I don't like it when they do it after the fact, but sometimes the horses need a little extra encouragment to go over the jump and speed up and while whipping them may not seem like the answer it usually does work. Now you shouldn't like BEAT them or whip them AFTER you've fallen off but sometimes it can be helpful if its not to hard

haha same here. my horse threw me off just a couple of weeks ago right away when i was getting on him. after i got up he just looked at me and i was like:"yeah you dork, thanks for that..." but i would never be angry at a horse for doing things like that since we can't forget that they have a mind on their own too!

I hate it when people punish their horses for refusing a jump for crying out loud! Just turn them round ask them to do it nicely - how would you liked to be punished by being jerked in the mouth or hit for stopping at a jump? Luckily quite a few riders here were kind:) sorry, just my view

there are some very honest horses on this! and some well ridden riders too... but 0:40 is a prime example of when you lean forward and your horse trips or suddenly stops your bound to go out the front door(well at least that is in the UK)

Cross country is so dangerous.. thousands of horses die of that in a year, or break something because the obstacles don't fall if the horse hits it by accident l love the video 01:08 l am in love with that horse!! What a beauty!!! l love the horses nice video!

Riding or being around horses is dangerous in general....not just cross country....

Jumping and dressage and normal riding are less dangerous then cross 1000 horses die a year of that awful sport because those obstacles don't fall if the horse hits it. which means they could break a leg or worse it can happen too with normal jumping but it's way less

No they're not, bc accident happen just as much as they do in XC....agreed that they're not so flexible if the horse hits it, but now they're trying to make the jumps out of give-able materiel, so it's safer. I ride XC and it's not awful, it's actually super adrenaline rushing and exciting!

Now maybe those obstacles fall but not in every cross country sport. it's been proven. if they changed that l'm happy Because it was not always like that check the past. my parents told me this and they know a lot about horses The old english cross country sport is deadly

Yes, just as trail riding or riding a horse in the arena is deadly and dangerous :) being around a horse in general is dangerous and can result in death at an moment! So yes some sports in the horse industry are a little more dangerous that others but that doesn't make them "evil" or "bad" or "horrible" or anything like that....and it's actually quite rare that a horse or rider gets killed on a XC course....look it up :)
