As an ex machinist all I can think about is the amount of run out on what is essentially a hand build piece of machinery. The working conditions break my heart as the amount of health conditions these guys get from that workshop must be incredible. I’m grateful to be in a first world country but know I had very little to do with that choice.

I couldn't believe it at :34:30 when the guy took to the ways with a handheld angle grinder. That's a really stupid thing to do. Then at 35:12 a guy took to the ways with a hand-held abrasive stone, going as fast as he could. No chance of any accuracy. For an interesting comparison, check out the Colchester company's video on making lathes, also on KZbin. Perfection compared to the rubbish shown in this video.

great video! it's really interesting to see the complete process of making a lathe machine. however, i wonder if the focus on quality is overshadowing the cost efficiency. sometimes it feels like manufacturers prioritize high-end features that a lot of small businesses can't afford. what do you all think?

In the old days, lathe parts such as the bed after casting were kept for 7 years behind "a barn" :-) to remove casting stresses. Only after that time was it processed-machined. Nowadays, nobody uses this. What other ways are there to speed up this process? Reheating the part to a suitably high temperature and keeping it there for at least 24 hours. Following very slow cooling (quasi-static cooling), usually cooling together with the furnace. Otherwise, there is never any guarantee that the cast iron part will be sufficiently accurate after machining.

Bit of a myth that. Products are usually produced in batches so some castings did get to sit for weeks or months, unlikely years
@mrmyorky563421 күн бұрын
@@wktodd It's not a myth. In 1966 I took my worn out lathe bed to Harrison Machine Tools in Halifax for re-machining and waited most of the day whilst it was done. I was shown around the factory and out in the yard was a pile of about 200 Lathe bed castings that had been part machined and were stacked up in the snow covered in rust. The Foreman who took me round explained that they had already been machined to remove the cast iron skin and would stay outdoors for seven years to relieve the stresses before final machining to size. The price for re-machining my lathe bed and re-scraping the saddle was £22/10 shillings
@wktodd21 күн бұрын
@mrmyorky5634 the foundry wil have a furnace that'll pour several tons of iron , it is costly to smelt so the factory uses all it can in one pour. It takes weeks perhaps months to produce a few lathes , lots of castings have to be stored . What story do you tell your visitors about the rusting castings?

I am from Czechoslovakia. In this industrial country, there were a number of companies that produced very precise machine tools and there were a number of companies that produced precision engineering products.. I worked in one of these engineering companies. Yes, these guys are capable of making something resembling a machine tool in primitive conditions. But I can say that we in the eighties of the 20th century were about 150 years ahead of these mechanics. Machine tracks without scratches, impure and bubble castings, immature bed machining, full tension. I could go on and it would be too long. I wouldn't brag about this video. This is not engineering. This is desperation. I have been repairing new sewing machines from these parts. Work for a killer. It could never sew. Today we are 130 years ahead of them. Unfortunately, I have to state that art has slowly disappeared from our homeland, young people are not interested in crafts and we are slowly approaching Pakistan. I know they will learn it slowly. We will forget the craft.

I'm a retired Machine Tool Fitter and I use's to use a T O S Czech built Lathe for many years. It was a very good Lathe, being a pleasure to use and always giving a good finish with impressive accuracy. The manufacturing process shown here is cringeworthy to say the least but they do produce a lathe that will work even though I'd have severe reservations about it's accuracy. Considering the conditions they work under though I'm still impressed, but a visit to a real Machine Tool Manufacturers would teach them good engineering practice.
@Ma_X6411 күн бұрын
No, you're wrong about that modern people are forgetting such craft. Many people now build pretty good machines with their own hands. It's just that at home, other materials are chosen than cast iron, because it's easier to weld a frame from steel parts than to cast a whole one from cast iron in the yard. In addition, high-tech bearings and ball screws, linear guides are available today. This allows you not to think about friction pairs, for example, and to correct some geometric flaws at the stage of installing the guides. Well, and electronics, of course.

CNC is fine for producing large numbers of parts but the initial outlay including tooling is very expensive. There are many small jobbing shops around the world where the lathe is used perhaps twice a week and mostly for 'one off's' or small batches of parts. A decent second hand centre Lathe is a very versatile machine tool, it will last a long time and it's relatively cheap to buy.

I know that the lathe will work, but saw nothing that impressed me except the obvious skill of the planer operator. I saw nothing that would ensure that the headstock spindle would end up parallel to the lathe ways in either plane. As for quality, casting iron from scrap metal makes for inconsistent quality material which is likely to be fairly soft, and wear quickly. In addition, the castings were made without having deep risers to pour the metal and vent the pour, resulting in castings likely to contain porous areas.

It's all very interesting, but I can't figure out when they make metal, do they know what the metal's characteristics are? They don't have a lab, and it's all on a whim.
