Agree with most points, but I'd say that working on your visual design going forward will be a huge benefit. As a hiring manager, it's a pretty competitive market right now and a lot of candidates get cut because they simply don't have the visual chops for the work. If you want to stand out (esp. for senior + roles), you want to ensure you have good visuals at the forefront.

Hi, so I just got laid off as a junior designer and I worked at a very small company - where I had to work with a micromanaging boss very closely (basically daily). I am very confident about my design eye and design skills and I showed that a lot on my personal projects before i got this job. The issue is, the designs i created at this comapany weren't pretty. Like they look kinda ugly tbh. I always backed up my design decisions, but my boss was always like "No just do this and that" and I had to follow that. I'm afraid that recruiters and hiring managers might think my visual skills arent that great as they might prob check my latest projects (= the ones i worked on at that company) only. Would you mind giving me any advice on this, from Hiring Manager POV?? 😭 Thank you so much!

Hi Mimi, glad to see that our work together in Designlab has led you here, mentoring other people in the design process.

@@mimimichi My daughter turns 30 today! She and her family are here at our house, including her two young sons. So, we are celebrating her birthday and Christmas all at once. During the pandemic, I joined the Design Science Studio. Then my father-in-law died of COVID, so when I realized I would need to become executor of his estate, I brought my work as a mentor at DesignLab to a close to concentrate on this responsibility. That same year, I was also unceremoniously removed from my position as Chair of Web Communications for the Executive Board of the BC Chapter of the Graphic Designers of Canada, as they were in the process of rebranding as the accreditation body for the Design Professionals of Canada (DESCAN). Apparently, they did not like my proposal, a suggestion for a national participatory design project that goes beyond performative land acknowledgements: Deconstructing Economics and the Systems of Colonial Apartheid Nationalism in Canada (DESCAN). It’s a long story. You can read it on my Substack. So, I am going back to school to finish a degree. The path of a designer is never a straight line. For me, it is leading me back to art and writing. I would be curious if you could offer some feedback on a research project exploring a model for life-centered design. I have been working on an interface for navigating metaphysical gravity.

Hi! What bootcamp were you apart of? Because I am interested in UX/UI design but I feel like I cannot really make a portfolio since my classes in school do not specialize in design like that. So I need to find a way to be able to build a portfolio. Do you have any advice?
@mimimichi2 күн бұрын
Hi! I was in UX Academy from DesignLab, which you can check out here: designlab.com/ux-academy?discount=AFF100 but I will say they don't have a portfolio-only course. They do help you with your portfolio, but it's folded into the entire UX learning program. If you only need portfolio help, then I would check out some other youtube videos like @alienacai's kzbin.info/www/bejne/o57Kqaamop59jdU. Hope that helps!
