"It reminds me of a boat captain I wronged long ago." The boat captain is a recurring character/gag in the God of War series. He first showed up in God of War 1 when he got swallowed whole by a Hydra. Kratos needed to get a key from him, so after killing the Hydra Kratos went inside its mouth to find it. The captain was just holding on trying not to fall down its throat. Kratos got to him, got the key and then just let the captain fall to his death. Later in the game the captain was found again in Hades trying to avoid falling into the river Styx. Kratos kicked him into it. In the second game the captain was brought back by accident by one of Kratos's enemies during a fight. Kratos kills him again. In the third game Kratos finds a note in Hades written by the captain cursing the "Ghost of Sparta." In the 2018 game there is a reference to the character as there is a treasure map Kratos finds called "The Boat Captain's Key" and it's on a ship that kind of looks like the ship from the first game. And now in this game Kratos references him again in this journal entry.

The musician in the tavern, Raeb is modeled after the game's composer Bear McCreary. He looks like him and Raeb is Bear spelled backwards. I haven't had time to look it up, but he might be the voice actor the character too.

I LOVED the side quests in this game. They feel like so much more than an additional to-do list. Completing them changes the landscape and can even provide additional cosmetics. Svartelfheim is the first example of how big the difference can be. Destroy the mining rigs and fish become visible swimming in the water, where there were none before. And the Lyngbakr, once freed... well, that's a little self-explanatory. It really does make you feel like you're making a difference in the realms. Also, I was not prepared for this game to give me Mimir feels, but it was worth it for his character development 😊

The Drauger pit fit was impressive. It took me a few tries with that first one that early on in the game. That was badass. 🙌🏼

actually the real reason parrying takes more getting used to now is because they deliberately fuck with you now. It can't be a reactive thing anymore but something you actively pay attention too. You cant parry on the yellow warnings as much as you used to. The warning now is only to start watching them not to parry immediately. each enemy has their own attack speed and they will either go insanely fast after the warning or wait to attack after the yellow warning. so it tricks you into trying to parry to quickly and then your guard gets broken so many times, then when you get used to that delay and adjust other enemies you run into will attack really fast then the attack comes and smacks you upside the head before you do anything. This is something the last game did not do.Attacks were more consistent with the warnings so combat felt more easy to be reactive too. Parrying has to be more proactive now not reacitve and watching how enemies are telegraphing their movements is far more important than watching for the yellow or red rings. Yellow just means they are about to perform a parryable attack but its still up to you to pay attention to how fast or how slow they are about to do it after the warning comes.

I too have had trouble parrying in this game compared to last. Never had trouble at all in the 2018 game but in this game I find pinpointing the moment to parry, much more difficult. In the 2018 game it felt obvious. When I try to parry the Grims in the moment that I would expect to parry, they keep lunging forward and I screw it up.

The enemies pause and feint their attacks more when attacking in this game, I just try and block and memorize the attacks before practicing parrying them. That way you can hear when the attack lands on the shield so you know when that was when you should parry.
