Myanmar's acting president, Myint Swe, has met with top army officials in Naypyitaw.
Immediately after being named president, Swe handed power to General Min Aung Hlaing.
Senior General Min Aung Hlaing is due to retire soon, after being commander of the army since 2011.
If the junta holds an election in a year’s time, as promised, this would allow him to take a civilian leadership role.

While I agree with the stance that the Army shouldn't be taking over undemocratically. Myanmar isn't a backwater, it's the largest country in Mainland Southeast Asia and it's in between China and India, two of the largest and militarised countries in Asia and has been invaded before, so "why do they need an army?" isn't a very smart question. Myanmar needs a defence force, but it needs to get rid of its culture of military dictatorship, which has been going on since the 60's.
