If you don't know Babylon 5 and/or feel discouraged by the dated graphics style or a few slow episodes with wooden acting in the first season... don't be! You would deny yourself an unparalleled universe and an astonishing achievement in storytelling that should be mentioned among the finest of the modern era, way beyond genre trenches and media boundaries. 😮 And a toast to every rewatch hurting a little more than the last while still utterly inevitable and undoubtedly worth it - with thanks to JMS, the cast, and the crew - including absent friends, in memory still bright. 😢

I'd like to see an expanded Universe on screen. We never saw The Dilgar War, when a fledgling Earth Alliance threw pretty much everything it had into the fire to save the Non-Aligned Worlds. We never see the years immediately after First Contact. We have only brief glimpses of what happens after Crusade abruptly ends. Or how Emperor Vir brings the Centauri Republic back from the brink (all while he became more decadent than even Mollari could have imagined himself being). Plus, any future developments have to take into account that several key cast members have Passed Beyond The Veil. I can't imagine a re-telling of the core story without Katsulas, for example.

I'm a big star trek fan but Babylon 5 is the best sci-fi show I've ever seen in terms of storytelling and characters. There 's no clear villain or hero, everything is nuanced, people change, do bad things for the greater good (or for what it seems the greater good) and good stuff that goes horribly wrong. Even the shadows wanted the best for the galaxy and the Vorlons were reals dicks. Londo Molari was my favorite character alongside G'Kar. Their love/hate relationship was quite funny. Actually, despite the grim tone the show had it was very funny sometimes, The episode where Ivanova suddenly becomes the leader of another race (Brakiri? I can't quite recall) because she was able to snatch a headband from them was hilarious. I still have the whole show on DVD.

Anyone here ever read David Brin's Uplift series? Because you all should. The quick rundown of the setting is that intelligent life is rare, and it is considered impossible for any life to reach intelligence beyond hunter/gatherer or whatever equivalent is for that species. The only one to is the long dead and mythical Progenitor race that created intergalactic society by uplifting species into intelligence. These species were then to be kept as indentured servants to the species who uplifted them for around 10 thousand years. And then 23rd century humans find this 2 billion year old society and are almost killed on spot for claiming to have not been uplifted. Only the fact humans had started to uplift chimps and dolphins, making humanity a patron species, is what gave humanity a little breathing room.
