So today I made this amazing mince pie! My gran used to call it ‘sheet pie’ but I like to call it ‘mince slice’ but whatever you want to call it, it is simply a massive mince pie :) Seriously easy to make…and absolutely delicious. Hope you give it a go!

Away to Arran, nice. I had extra School dinners during part of my school life after my Summer Essay in English lesson made my Teacher cry. I can still remember Minced beef and onion slice because I ate so much of it. If there was any left in the tray, a Teacher would chuck on what Veg was left, to save on washing up. And I'd have to sit there and eat it all out of the tray, whilst the Cleaners worked around me and adults whispered about me to the Teacher, and I could take no notice of any normal School life. Some Days I'd have to finish off a huge jug of custard and some sponge as well. As such i really enjoyed School dinners. In my School the Kitchen was open plan so we could see Cook pricking the bottom. I really don't remember it being so Golden, maybe they had been a bit tight on the wash, Milk if I remember rightly, and after everyone else had left to go back to Lessons, Minced slice was a few hours old and had been kept warm, and as such was much drier than the out of the oven version. If there was no Gravy left I might be lucky and there might be Baked Beans left. Mash, Slice and Baked Beans, wow!

Valerie you could do what l do when l'm cooking for one. Cut the pastry into 6 and make 6 smaller ones. Take 5 of them out about 10 minutes early and cook the 6th for the full time. Eat the one and freeze the other 5 when they're cool. Wrap them separately and you'll be able to take out as many or as few as you want. When you're ready to eat another one, thaw it and cook it for the 10 minutes it missed out on. It will come up like freshly baked. 🙂

Hi, I'm sure our dinner ladies used plain flour to thicken the mince. I always loved school dinners especially mince beef pie and through experimentation managed to reproduce the flavour and texture. The flour just mnakes it for me. Thanks.

I would use flour also. I'd stir it into the cooked meat, before adding the water. You get a nice gravy that way.

I had to rewind the whole "primary school" thing to make sure she really said it. As a half yank, our school lunches had something called "flying saucers". While there are many variants, my school's interpretation was a slice of bologna, a plop of mashed potatoes (instant) on top, with a pile of shredded cheese to cover it Then it was slapped in an oven until the cheese melted and the edges of the bologna curled. Afterwards, it was scooped on a lunch tray and slung to us. Had I known of this alternate reality, I would have demanded to go live with my aunt in Newton Mearns.

Growing up in the UK, I remember delicious school dinners, complete with great desserts, sorry you didn't have the same.. I wonder if they still do school dinners, cooked from scratch in the school kitchens. I don't live there now, so no one to ask, perhaps google knows😊

@@margaretr5701 still made from scratch in the school I work at. Although now schools dinners are a bit more cosmopolitan eg curry, lasagna, Spag bol, pizza but we still have cheese and onion flan, mince pie , cheesy potato, sausage and mash, roast dinner once a week.

@@annerutherford1187 nice to hear!😋 One of my favourites used to be cod, mashed potatoes and peas, very plain but I liked it! School dinner desserts were the best. Looking back, I really admire how organised it was, the school, originally built for 3,000, had over 7,000 students, and if I recall correctly, we had dinners in shifts! Well done to the dinner ladies, hard working angels😇😇😇 I also remember teachers stood by to keep order! We were very quiet, no talking, single file, etc. Everyone was nice though, no bad memories. Keep up the good work, Anne!

@@margaretr5701 My great aunt used to put cut potatoes in a baking dish, cover them with frozen cod fillets, then put a package of frozen cut spinach on top of that, and then poured cream of mushroom soup (Campbell's) all over it, and bake it for about an hour. It always was delicious.

@TheRenaissanceman65 Yes. Yes I do. Here, you haven't been talking to my mum, have you? (To be fair (warning: incoming excuse posing as a reason), I hadn't eaten since the morning before (porridge) and I was thinking of getting a couple of steak bakes from Greggs. Since I already had the ingredients, I thought why not? After taking it out of the oven I had a coupla pieces. 'Wonder if my son would like some?' I asked him but, due to him being asleep and in another room 12 feet away, he didn't answer. I took that as a 'No thanks, dad' and well, the rest is gluttony. I meean, HISTORY. HISTORY!
