Stairway To Heaven always came out #1 on all the countdowns and that's a fact. Listen to both songs!!! Then compare. Ronnie Van Zant wrote this song about being free in America and there's no other song that brings out that kind of Pride, Emotion, and Obsession of being free period!!! Compare the music!!! Not even Stairway To Heaven can come close to the music arrangement that these guys came up with to adorn the greatest song ever written and composed!!! As with me I'm not sure how long before the crash but It was definitely before.. I saw them at Knebworth in 76 possibly August I can't really remember it was a full festival of bands with skynryd as second billing to the rolling stones.. It's anything but a guitar solo. It's a bassist, a drummer, a keyboardist and THREE guitars. Sometimes it's a lead guitar and 2 rhythm guitars sometimes 2 leads and a single rhythm, and sometimes it's 3 lead guitars playing, sometimes in synch and sometimes in counter point. At least six musicians at the same time. It's an instrumental.

If you watch the concert video, when the solo starts, it's one playing the solo, one appears to be rythm and one appears counterpoint. Partway through, it's two separate solos going, and throughout the rest of the time sometimes they sync and sometimes they diverge (all while the third guitar is mostly playing rhythm, but does some other stuff from time-to-time). It's truly one of the sickest things I've seen, and to be honest, I never really knew much about 'Skynyrd before I saw that a couple of months ago (outside of the fact they were southern rock from the 70s), but that clip and the amazing way they played got me totally interested!

Losing this band was one of rocks saddest moments, but they left us with some iconic songs & Free Bird is up there true Southern Rock & the guitar is only the best head banging parts of this song. Love it The Singer Ronnie Van Zant once said about the song that everyone wants to be free & that a bird can fly wherever he wants to

The last remaining original member (Gary Rossington) just passed away a few weeks ago. My brother was born in '63. I was born in '70 and I can remember him playing Lynyrd Skynyrd constantly in the 70s. It was his favorite group. I remember crying at a young age when I saw the paper where their plane had crashed. Yes, this is one of rock's top masterpieces. It's kind of like "Free Bird" is America's rock masterpiece like "Stairway to Heaven" (Led Zeppelin) is Britain's. I love seeing young people reacting to them and see their eyes getting bigger and bigger and being blown away. It's like listening to it for the first time again. Great reaction!

My mother actually went to school at Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, FL and she knew the real Leonard Skinner. Now called Lee High School. A lot of music came out of this school in a round about way. Mae Boren Axton was a school teacher at this school when my mom attended and she wrote "Heartbreak Hotel" which became a major hit for Elvis Presley. Mae Boren Axton's son Hoyt Axton wrote "Never Been to Spain" and "Joy to the World" for Three Dog Night and was a major hit back in the 60s. That would be a song to react to as well. My uncle use to hunt with Hoyt when they were teenagers. Thanks for indulging me. Enjoyed your reactions and reviewed. This song crosses a lot of cultural and musical genre barriers for sure. @@jacqueline4514 Also Kris Kristofferson's former wife Rita Coolidge's father preached at my grandfather's Baptist church on Broward road in north Jacksonville. Rita Coolidge was a star in her own right in the 60s and 70s. Hoyt Axton also graduated from Robert E. Lee high.

FUN FACT: Back in 1974 when the band was putting together the final version of the album "Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd" they did not want to put this song on the record because it was too long and thought most people would not like it. Their manager decided that they should keep it in and it became one of the most well know rock songs of all time. Thank god for that man

No, their producer (Tom Dowd) DIDNT want to include it because he thought it was too long and would never get airplay. Ronnie Van Zant basically kicked him out of the studio (Muscle Shoals Sound Studio) and said "we're recording it ourselves" and didn't let him back in until they were done. Dowd said "Ronnie was VERY convincing..." He basically threatened to kick his ass if he tried to stop them. Glad he listened. :-)

Well I saw them in Miami in spring of 1974. Charlie Daniels opened for them. Both bands played on the ocean on some type of a barge! It was friggin incredible! I later saw them at Eastern Michigan University! Both times were awesome! But man, I wish there was video of that gig on the ocean in Miami!! PEACE!

They talked abt video recording One More From the Road but RVZ felt it might be too distracting because it was double live LP & the guys were nervous, they felt this was time to prove if you came to Skynyrd concert, it would sound like the album version so decided against it. I keep hoping someone d2od it anyway & it will surfave someday!

Oakland is good, depends on what you want to see, Oakland is like at least 50% bunch of screaming girls in audience almost through the entire ballad part & part of Allen's solo, near the end is great but to me Knebworth great from beginning to end

Lynyrd Skynyrd named themselves after their high school teacher/coach Leonard Skinner. Apparently a favorite of theirs and a bit of a private joke amongst themselves. It could be seen as a tribute to Mr. Skinner. Freebird is a true Southern Rock anthem that saturated the airwaves of the Baby Boom generation, of which I am one. Glad to see your reaction to this guitar hero classic.

Lynyrd Skynyrd are a band, not a singular artist. However, Lenard Skinner was their PE (physical education/coach) at school who they all thought was an ass. So the band name was them making fun of him

My great aunt taught at Lee High School, DuPont and Fletcher. She was head of the English department at the Duval County school board before she retired, then taught at JU. She didn’t have anything nice to say about him. He ended up selling real estate at the beach for awhile. Free Bird is one of those songs i've heard a 1000 times. I wouldn't even think of putting it on for fun anymore. It's like Stairway or Hotel California or Cocaine that way. I was about to post something similar. This song was so good they overplayed it on the radio and they say you can only take so much of a good thing. That's what radio will do to you. They stomp the same songs over and over and over and over again into the ground. Thank goodness I never listened to much radio, because even though I have heard this and the others you mentioned a lot of times, 45 years later I am not really sick of them. Although not written for him, Lynyrd Skynyrd dedicated this song to the memory of Duane Allman after he died in a motorcycle accident. In October of 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd were involved in a fiery plane crash where 6 of 20 people died, including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. The record company immediately recalled their latest album, Street Survivors, which pictured the band on the cover, surrounded by flames. They rereleased the album without the flames. You really need to see them perform this live. Three lead guitars, a bass, piano, and drums, all in perfect harmony. It is spectacular. In my opinion, the best rock performance of all time.

Steve Gaines was a stellar guitarist. He was just getting started when he died so young along with his sister, backup singer. Cassie Gaines and the world will forever miss Ronnie Van Zant's voice. He was a brilliant singer. After seeing the crash site and plane, it's a miracle anyone survived. I'm glad his brother, Johnny Van Zant, headed the band up, and they continued. I love the saying, "I might be old, but I've seen all the great bands" 👍

Back in March 2020, I played a gig out of town, in New Mexico. Our drummer wanted to have a family and friends party, and his brother is a guitar player, as am I. I'm not a big fan of "Free Bird", as it is a very taxing song to play, but the crowd insisted, and we played it. I've never seen a more "in to a song" audience ever. @@dongrogg5765 I was there a bit later in '88. Right outside of Stalag Schwab was the little town of Henoko. My memory might be a little off so bare with me. When you walked into town, there was a fried rice stand where the road branched left and right. Down the right path were most of the bars. Mimi's wasn't on the main drag. I can't remember exactly how to get to Mimi's bar or even what the actual name of the place was, but I know it was down a side street, well off the beaten trail. I found it by accident exploring the town. It was extremely small, maybe 200 sq/f, not much more than that. When you walked in, you do a right face and the few tables are in front with the bar to starboard. Don't remember if the juke box was to port or on the back wall. I wanna say to port, but I could be wrong. Mimi was gorgeous, late twenties or early thirties. Had a half American son. Don't think the father even knew before he rotated back. As a result, she would never date any of us. But that woman was a sweetheart. If business was slow, she'd lock the doors and break out the good sake. We'd have a few and then escort Mimi to all the other bars in town and get the most jealous looks from all the other servicemen having to settle for the "by me drinkie" girls. And absolutely nobody would disrespect her in our presence. Ever. Not even Shore Patrol. I've tried using Google Maps street view in Henoko and it's useless. I just can't remember where the place is. I hope Mimi and her son had a good life.

Seems to me there were bars all over the island. Okinawa’s main resource was the Marine Corps I do believe.

In my entire six month UDP I didn't save a penny, but damn I had a good time! I was in 1st Tanks from Pendleton, but my company was attached to 1st Tracked Vehicle Battalion, half tanks and half amtracks. It was the first unit you passed as you cleared the main gate at Schwab. I think you guys were all the way down at the bottom of the hill, or maybe I'm thinking of a different squadron. There were definitely a few helos around, I'm sure of that much. Hey, are you the folks that would supply us with a FAC? Usually, the FAC replaces the loader on the XO's tank. I was on the XO's crew once and had to teach this hotshot fighter pilot captain which main gun rounds were which and how to load without getting creamed by the breach. One of the weirdest things I ever did in the Corps.

This is eerie, because this popped up on my feed today, Monday, March 6th, 2023. Yesterday, March 5th, 2023, the last original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, guitarist Gary Rossington, passed away at the age of 71. He is the guitarist who played the hauntingly beautiful opening solo using a slide. If you really want to see just how awesome they were live, you can see the original Lynyrd Skynyrd line up (before the crash) playing Free Bird in the Oakland Coliseum in 1977. There’s another great live video of them playing live in 2003 in Tennessee, with Ronnie Van Zandt’s brother, Johnny on lead vocals, and Ricky Metlock of Black Oak Arkansas on lead guitar. Gary Rossington plays slide guitar as always. Both are awesome performances. RIP Gary Rossington. You’re truly “Free As A Bird Now” with your Skynyrd family in Heaven. Beautiful reaction! Allman brothers birthed the southern blues genre, blending soul, rock, blues, jazz, country all together with superb playing. They were at the height of their career at 24 years old !! The brothers studied the blues and other artists then formed their dream band. One of the few that had two drummers. Got that hint from James Brown ! When they would do this song on stage, usually the last song, Gary Rossington would do the slide guitar lead work with Allen Collins and Steve Gaines doing the rhythm guitar work at the beginning of the song and during the vocals. But once the vocals were over Allen Collins would then take over with amazing lead work that just blew everyone's mind. Then while Gary Rossington was doing the rhythm work, Steve Gaines would join in with Allen Collins in like a lead guitar duel. This song would often go on for a half an hour at live shows and nobody minded at all. For us Baby Boomers who were into Southern Rock and Roll this song was like THE anthem of Southern Rock. Everyone always talks about Ronnie van Zant the vocalist, and I really liked his voice but it was always the musicians in this band that always amazed me. The drummer, the bass player and the keyboard player were all amazing musicians and then how many groups have you ever heard of that had three, count them, three LEAD guitarist, anyone of which could leave you sitting there with your mouth hanging open.

I did see them at the near by Concord Pavilion, a little more smaller venue the the Oakland Stadium around this time. The Skynyrd boys kept from dying while waiting for their chance to record at the little Burlap Palace, also known as Muscle Shoals Sound studios. To keep from starving, they walked the streets of Sheffield, Alabama, picking up coke bottles and turning them in for 2 cents a bottle. Wasn't no easy way to succeed in Music's hey day. You had to be a TOUGH mother flucker to make it in that time period(the 60s and 70s) when all the greats were dueling for the top spots in the charts. To show you the drive and determination of the Men of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Every night they had to fight their way to Belews'Truck stop against truckers who didn't like their long hair. They were on there way to Baton Rouge, LA. Such a terrible tragedy, but I saved my tickets and they toured again years later with the lead singers younger brother taking his place and the tour started in Baton Rouge. People that keep their tickets got select seating and backstage passes to meet the band with food and drinks. Great time, even caught a drum stick and had it signed.

One of the true rock anthems. I don't know how often you review comments to older reactions, but you HAVE to react to the live version from 1977 Oakland. The band and the crowd just feed off of each other. Remember all the girls you will see in this video are now probably someones grandma. This was from the time of the super concert when promoters would put on a show in an open air stadium with two or three BIG acts.

Okay. Guitar. If the reactors here really like the blazing guitar solos, such as this one, IMHO the gold standard for this wild and crazy dual-lead guitar soloing is THE OUTLAWS - GREEN GRASS AND HIGH TIDES. While this song is frequently compared to Freebird I find it a more dynamic song. It has more movements, the slow/fast dynamic. It goes through more unexpected phases and just guitar solo, guitar solo, dual guitar solo, guitar solo, dual-lead call and response trade offs, guitar solo, guitar solo, freight train of guitar soloing. Tidal wave of guitar soloing, guitar solo, guitar solo, guitar solo, and then at the end: guitar solo, guitar solo, dual lead, then trade off solo. Hammering on, pulling off like crazy. There was just something special about the Hughie Thomasson/Billy Jones (RIP) dual lead playing that I have not encountered since this song was released. Very special. I hope they react to it soon.

Love the fact I got to see the Original Lynyrd Skynyrd Band before the plane crash ….. you guys need to go back and watch the Live Version of this in Cali …. I did too! It was their very first concert of more than their usual amount of 200 people (that was from their documentary).... they opened for The Who at the SF Cow Palace packed with 16,000 people in 1973. They were really engaging and got good reviews ❤️

This was "the" song that every high school age band had to play at every party in the early 80's! "Free Bird"!! Picture yourself being at a high school aged party, and after almost every song the band finished playing, someone would yell out "Freebird"!........I'm so glad to have lived through the 80"s.
