Everyone talks about cars of this vintage being built in “the malaise era”. They seem too focused on the lower power output of cars built during the late ‘70s and early ‘80s while overlooking how smooth and comfortable these cars were. Rivieras like this one here were an absolute dream to drive, got good fuel economy, and we’re very stable platforms that a man could enjoy driving for long hours without becoming cramped or fatigued. I love this car!!!

@@edkelley1649 depends on your point of view. Some say the malaise era ended in ‘83. But I recall GM, Ford, and Mopar small block V-8 engines in ‘85 through ‘88 putting out only about 200 hp or less. If that ain’t malaise I don’t know what is. A sparkling new Corvette in ‘85 equipped with a 5.7 liter only made abut 190 hp as I remember things. Definitely malaise.

She's a real beauty! 1n 1985 South Africa 🇿🇦was deep in the mire of international sanctions against us and people were looking for cheap and small cars to run, but for some reason GM decided to market these Rivieras in our country and they sold till 1987. I don't suppose in any significant quantity but I remember them at the Royal Show in Pietermaritzburg for those 3 years, it would seem they came from GM 's plant in Canada because they had metric speedometers and there was a flipside to the handbooks in Afrikaans but they were still left hand drive. About 4 years ago I spotted one in the CBD of Pietermaritzburg with a Lesotho registration plate, that must take some doing to maintain a car 🚗like that in that environment, it looked very good. This video 📹really gave me that really fuzzy feeling of nostalgia.

I always watch videos of old cars especially the Buicks grew up on this brand thanks to these beautiful classics, love the 1984-85 Lesabre always said to myself if was an adult in 1985 would have bought that model now I am going to say same thing with the Riv, wanted a 2door coupe this would had been on my car list as much of car person I am that beast would had looked just like this model almost like new. They don't make cars this great anymore, saw a convertible in white not that long ago was elderly man a few years ago saw a coupe all pimped look like singing the Rubberband man (Spinners) lol I said a old school car had an older woman on passenger with those ridiculous 22 inch rims or so look like pig tails still these were some beautiful cars even liked the Toronado that was same as (Riviera) think the Buick did look better as much loved Oldsmobile. A teacher that taught my mother had one of these at that time she and her husband were saving up buying them a beautiful new home it looked good it was light color with reddish or brownish dark interior ran like a tank after paid cash for her home she finally sold that car remember it was up for sale at service station with for sale as last time saw that beauty was when younger guy was driving that was way back in the in the 90s. 29:30 - 1980s GM cars are notorious for deteriorating headliner material. If the visor is doing that the whole headliner is not far off or is actually like that. It can be replaced with better, longer lasting padding and liner material. As for the A/C, if it needs charged it most likely has a leak in the system which would require a complete evacuation of the R-12 and a complete replacement of the lines, condenser, evaporator, compressor, and full recharge with R-134a

My grandmother owned a dark red 1984 Rivera. My parents ended up with it and used it as a family car / work truck. from hauling 3 kids and all my dad's tools, the auto-leveling air shocks were completely destroyed. I drove it while I was in high school some until we got rid of it. I broke the tail pipe and melted the tail light. The car was a mess when we got rid of it. I still have dreams about it.

What a gorgeous car in showroom condition - it even has the new car smell (I'll have to take your word for that). I agree that of the trio of GM personal luxury cars from that model year ( the Eldo, Riviera, and Toronado ) the "Riv" was by far the best looking of this trio of sisters! I loved it's flowing front lines compared to the Eldo's verticality. The Toronado of course was the ugly sister of the trio. The only thing that surprises me with this model year of GM personal luxury cars (and this applies equally to the Eldo, Riv and Toronado) is that the rear window was fixed for no apparent reason. How did it make sense to build a two-door hardtop where the back window did not go down? Can anyone explain this? If I was a backseat occupant I would have felt cheated! I would be like "where is my power window switch?" (as a kid I was obsessed with power windows). This was not like the '72 Cadillac Coupe de Ville where the rear window was basically a giant opera window. These cars had hardtop lines! I'll never figure this out.

My Dad had a 1983 in white with a red interior. My Uncle had an Eldorado and you're right.. The Buick was much better looking.

Wow i like the leather wrapped steering wheel also used on the turbo Regals buicks and turbo Rivieras i can imagine that this interior still has the new car smell its such ashme that GM will never make any cars like this anymore

Love this car. This would be my weekender in the summer for sure. I also love how you shot the video. When you're bringing it over to The Wizard, show this video to Mrs. Wizard so that she knows how to shoot interiors because she hasn't a clue.
