The transmissions are "Super Turbine" 400's. The one-year-only and first year S.T. 400 did NOT have a 2nd gear quadrant position(L2). From 1965-on, ALL S.T.400 and TH400's added the L2 position(or Dual-Drive in Cadillac's to through the 1980 model year). Eventually, the TH400 would go to the more conventual P-R-N-D-2-1 shift quadrants. The glass windshield washer bottles are for refilling the plastic reservoirs. The plastic reservoirs were what came on the car. The refill WW bottles changed to plastic in later years.

Actually, as I recall, the stuff in the glass bottle was an antifreeze to be added to the plain old water that everybody used in the main plastic reservoir back in those days. You would add the antifreeze to the water during cold months. Good God do I love those first series Rivieras! Also - I was hoping you would have pointed out how the outer door skins were screwed onto the door frames because it was the first hardtop without a metal frame around the glass window pane. On the assembly line they fitted the frameless windows to the doors very precisely for a good seal with the skins off and THEN bolted the skins on.

@@wurlitzer1100 The GM windshield washer fluid had alcohol it, which was an anti-freeze, but the mixture was blue and meant to clean windows, like Windex. In freezing climates people would add green anti-freeze to the windshield washer fluid, but it would cause the wipers to smear. In the Olds Jetfire F85, with the turbo-charged 215 V8, these had a similar bottle strapped to the inner fender which contained "Turbo Rocket Fluid". It looked like lemonade and was poured into it's own plastic reservoir for injection into the intake stream. It contained water and methyl alcohol with a little rust inhibitor.

Nice overview, thank you. I desperately wanted the '65 GS to restore, missed out on one due to late financing, so ended up with the '64. Completely restored it, mine had the Rally steering wheel, rear defroster, rear speaker, wonderbar, 401, silicon fan clutch, A/C, finned drum brakes, cornering lights, etc. I replaced the parking lights top/bottom with brighter bulbs, got stopped one time by city cop as he didn't see them as legal. I got off. I always thought the front bumper was flimsy. All the ashtray/cigarette lighters, sheesh everyone was a chain-smoker back then! The car easily burned out, and had the dual exhaust with resonators. It was quite the show car for a 20 year old, the doors were heavy and clunky because the outside panels unscrewed. The roof was leaded, because of the design, the lack of emblems was due to the fact that they were meant to be Cadillac, but moved to Buick at launch.

I have a 1965 Riviera. The gas mileage was between 10.45 city nd 10.54 Highway. I know it sounds picky but that was years of figuring mileages. Mine was originally all black, interior and exterior. The AC was absolutely AMAZING! 29 degree air and ice on the vents on low blower. Really. I have the Riviera emblem on the door paneling and the rear door handle was an option. The reverb was called "Concert Hall Sound" and utilized the rear speaker. The ribbed rocker panels were standard witth the GS but an option with the standard powerplant. OK, there you go! (:-D)

The glass bottle was just to hold extra washer solvent concentrate. The plastic tank is the correct one , in the correct location on both Rivieras. The rear arm rest on the ‘65 was a factory option and had nothing to do with the car being a Grand Sport. The ‘64 rear seat had just been used more over the ‘65 and thus the padding was more collapsed. The rear seat room is identical in both cars. The tilt wheel was optional on the ‘64 and was a standard feature on ALL ‘65 Rivieras. The paint color on the ‘64 engine is incorrect, it came with a greenish color from the factory. The passenger sun- visor mirror was a factory option or could have been obtained from dealer parts dept. The hood latch actually has a secondary latch, but it is controlled by the same release. I see previous comments corrected you on the ‘65 transmission and the head lights on the ‘64 and the 4 note horn. I know it’s hard to keep all of these things straight, but facts are important.🎉 21:52 All things considered, you do a very nice job on these videos. Thank you for showing these wonderful cars!

I'll take the Green 64, with the optional engine priced at $139.75 in 1964 the 64 could be had with a center armrest as an option. The drive belts are Dayco (aftermarket). Back in the day, you could sit down with a build sheet and pick and choose just about any configuration you wanted. Those days? Pretty much gone. The 63 had Buick in block letters on the trunk, 64 had a cleaner look. Are you aware that the Riviera was originally to be a Cadillac? Designer Jock Twombley intended and penned the Riviera as a Cadillac. But because Cadillac was on a hot streak, and perhaps more importantly because Buick was becoming a bit staid, the Riviera was given the thumbs-up as a Buick by Earl’s protégé and successor Bill Mitchell. Riviera was meant to be GM’s personal luxury answer to Ford’s Thunderbird, also. Perhaps the most beautiful car (in it's first generation) GM ever made, at least in my personal opinion. Interesting comparison.

What lovely timeless classics. I love the look on the '65 front but can you imagine how much it would cost to have the doors over the headlights fixed should they not function? Beyond the better quality of seats in the Gran Sport, the package had some ride and handling pieces not used on the regular Riviera. The road wheels may have also been standard on the GS and optional on other Riviera's. The GS would have been top of the line in those years. They also changed the dash between the years as well. Neat armrest isn't it. Thanks for a well done comparison of another one of my favorite cars. I believe that the Thunderbird did not say Ford anywhere during this time period, a trick stolen by GM for the Riviera beyond the concept of a personal car.

I made mention of that because of the Lincoln mark five in Continental Mark three they don’t say Lincoln on them anywhere in the argument is that Lincoln did not make that car it is a very confusing lineage that has misinformation and misrepresentation all over it.. to my knowledge the only car that Continental made underneath the continental moniker was the continental mark two.. Some would argue the continental mark three was made by Ford instead of Lincoln but was sold at Lincoln dealers.. I get at least one nasty message every month about either the mark five or the continental mark three so I just wanted to bring that to everybody’s attention.. just because it does not have the car’s name doesn’t mean that it wasn’t built by that manufacturer like Packard twin six.. that car was a wicked expensive car nowhere on it does it say Packard. Glad you digged this video =) I absolutely love doing the comparisons they are a lot of fun to do I really want to my goal is to start comparing cars and I mean I’ve been doing it I wanna compare cars to each other that haven’t been compared or one would never think to compare that car to that car.. this is an outside the box channel I’m an outside the box person lol.. different perspectives

@@What.its.like. Of course we know who made the Riviera and Thunderbird and I believe you got it right on the Continental. Some try to say the '58 Continental was not a Lincoln since it doesn't say Lincoln on it but I beg to differ. Just check the vin plate in the door jam and it says Lincoln on it. Besides, all you have to do is look at them side by side to see that there are trim differences and the roof is different but they look just like Lincoln. The Continental Mark II is a Continental. The glass bottle holds washer fluid concentrate which you add to the plastic, factory installed, washer fluid reservoir. The trumpet horn is a factory installed option. The GS has an upscale interior which explains the rear center armrest and, possibly, the thicker cushioning. Or, the seats may have been overstuffed during restoration. The 64 may still have its original factory installed interior and the cushioning may have shrunk slightly during the last sixty years. The 65 rear ashtray cover was redesigned to allow easier access to the lighter when the ashtray was open.

Well done. Seeing as to both were covered it was nice to have a side x side comparison. I found the 65 far and away more subdued styling a lot better. The 64 had a Wildcat motor, while the 65 had a Super Wildcat motor. How do they compare performance wise.

To clear up some of the details, the 65 in question has the deluxe interior option which includes much more padded seats, full length wood inserts on the interior side panels and the ribbed rocker panel moldings. The standard 65 interior was pretty much identical to the 64 interior. The ribbed rocker panel moldings were a separate option that was available for order on a base interior 65 Riviera. The door panels on the 65 in this video are incorrect. The wood inserts on the door panels are missing the Riviera emblem in the middle of the front door wood sections and the wood inserts are missing the black pinstripe around the perimeter that should be present on the front doors and rear quarter interior panels. On the outside, the pinstripe down the side is incorrect, as are the red stripe tires. Original tires on a 65 Riviera were triple whitewalls or blackwalls. No 65 Riviera could be ordered with pin stripes down the side. The 65 in this video has the correct optional 4 note horns. The 65 does say Buick on the buttons of the original Sonomatic radio. There is only one alternator belt on the 64 because it doesn't have A/C.

@@What.its.like. Yeah I have pictures of both side by side and the 65 is a better look, if I could get them to accept a lesser offer I'd take both as these cars are hard to find in restorable condition and I don't want someone else's work that I know nothing about.I have a vision of what I want them to look like inside and out.And these cars have hidden rust I just know it so that's another reason I wouldn't pay the asking price.

The dual quad rochester 425 cu. in. version was a dealer installed option. Base hp went from 340 hp to 360 hp but torque stayed the same. The 425 "nail head" design was last used in the '66 Riv. In '67, the base engine was a 430 cu.in. with 360 hp with the single 4 barrel carb.
@bradhoward9055
@bradhoward9055 Жыл бұрын
The dual quad, super Wildcat engine was a factory option and the carburetors were Carter AFBs. That engine had a different, dual snorkel air cleaner housing that was chrome, finned aluminum valve covers, completely different throttle linkage and obviously an entirely different intake manifold. To have bought all of the components through a parts department would have been ten times the cost and only obtained that way by the most foolish people. You could have done the same thing to make your own Grand Sport, ordering all the pieces from a dealer, but only a fool would do that.

@@bradhoward9055 I'm pretty sure though the GS upgrade was indeed a factory upgrade, the dual carb set-up was a dealer installed option.

Now you are talking Jay, the Buick rivieras were really something in the mid-sixties. More than likely, I will tend toward the 65, But let's see. One thing I would like to find out about at the end of the year will need research. That is, how often was leather featured as an option in American vehicles, across all eras. In the sense that the Model Y could not have vinyl, simply because it wasn't invented yet. The aspects of features you show that really draw me, are the engines, dashboards and instrumentation. I am very curious about which was the first American car which incorporated the fenders into the body style. Instead of having a pointy centre for the engine, and outrigger fenders. Got to give it to the 65, because of the staggered headlights. The whole car just looks better, with lights or without. Did I tell you? Lesbian vampires stole my lunch money.

I can answer the fender question for you the very first car was a Buick Y job it was technically a concept car but Harley earl drove it as his personal car that car is absolutely incredible I would love to do a video on that one day.. Leno got to drive it =) I believe it’s 1938 off the top of my head but as far as production cars go I would have to look that up kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpiwi3d5YtJ-Zpo
