While some mind-body medicine pioneers and New Age teachers talk about how we can heal ourselves, Dr. Lissa Rankin was a skeptical physician, trained in evidence-based academic medicine and raised by a closed-minded physician father.
But after witnessing patients who declined conventional medical treatment, only to experience spontaneous remissions from seemingly ""incurable"" illnesses, she couldn't deny the possibility that patients might hold within them the power to heal themselves. Her curiosity led her to dig deep into the medical literature to scientifically prove that the mind can heal the body.
Her search uncovered not only proof that you can heal yourself, but also the shocking physiological mechanisms of how emotions like fear, loneliness, pessimism, and depression can make the body sick, while love, intimate connection, optimism, and faith can cure you.
About Dr. Rankin
Lissa Rankin, M.D. is a physician whose research led her to discover that our bodies have natural self-repair mechanisms that can be activated or disabled based on thoughts, beliefs, and feelings that originate in the mind. She is on a mission to heal our broken health care system, help patients play a more active role in healing themselves, heal, train and certify physicians in a more enlightened way of practicing medicine, and encourage the health care industry to embrace and facilitate, rather than resist, the body's self-healing capacities. Lissa has written 3 books, including her newest book Mind Over Medicine: Scientific Proof That You Can Heal Yourself. She speaks around the world, blogs at LissaRankin.com, paints professionally, and founded the Whole Health Medicine Institute, a training program for health care providers. She leads a mentoring program for visionaries, founded the wellness communities HealHealthCareNow.com and OwningPink.com, and teaches online programs, such as ""Find Your Calling"" with Dr. Martha Beck and Amy Ahlers, and ""Visionary Ignition Switch,"" an online business school for visionaries co-created with Amy Ahlers.
Her work has been featured extensively in the national media, including O magazine, The New York Times, CNN, Health, Women's Health, Self, Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, Glamour, and Cosmopolitan.
You can follow her on Twitter at @lissarankin or at Facebook.com/LissaRankin.
Lissa lives in Marin County, California with her husband and daughter.

My father was a physician. As he aged he came to the same conclusion as has Dr. Rankin. One more thing. My physician, an internist, is forever throwing pills at me, and I am forever throwing them back at him. After looking at my blood work the other day he said, "Just keep doing what you are doing." There may yet be hope for him. I told him that nobody knows this body I'm living in better than I do, so we need to work together. He's treating me for hypertension and type II diabetes. I'm taking none of some of the pills and less of the others. And, I'm not doing those CT scans every year. I will, perhaps, do one every five years. He's freaked out by my smoking. I'm freaked out by the radiation exposure. I think Dr. Rankin is on to something here. Maybe I should make a gift of her book to my physician.

Modupe Sarratt - I would add to "know thyself" "heal thyself" which takes knowing and brings forth action ... Knowing alone you are not well isn't enough, knowing the process of healing isn't enough ... To BE well you must DO well ... But I wholeheartedly support your Socratesian reminder "Knowing Thy Self" is at the core of "Healing Thy Self".

I had asthma since I was 10-11 years old, and it is a terrible ailment. One day, I decided that "its enough, no more asthma for me," and the next morning was the nicest morning woke into for more than 40+ years! No asthma, no creaking in the chest, so easy to breathe. Of course, I had been meditating forfew years, learning to still my mind. The decision not to have asthma was taken in jiffy, and I haven't had a asthmatic seisure, or even coghing session, or wahtever for more than a decade! Today, I have the ability to talk to a sick person and tell "you are not going to have cancer any more!" or, anything else.

@@briansmith2836 many of us are struggling with the same negative blather in our mind and it took me 67 years to learn that the inner critic and negativity, the "go to" or default setting is really just a well practiced habit that we constantly reinforce with more negative thinking... Those inner thoughts were really affirmations; very effective affirmations but they're negative instead of positive.. It has taken a year but gradually we're able to change the inner narrative 🤗 I'm still developing it with DAILY intention setting and self love meditation... Many of us have decades of negative affirmations to undo but they really can be undone. Good luck to all of us... BTW, my debilitating spinal problems are significantly diminished... Not gone but definitely manageable. Cheers and good luck 🤞

So grateful for this ancient acknowledgement. At 76 I healed myself from an acute case of Lysteria (kills 50% of elders or immune-system compromised and I have both) due, I believe, to the unquestioned conviction I would heal, and to the loving relationships in my life. I was camping in the forest and took a motel room ($$!) for six weeks instead of doctor or hospital. It took several weeks to recover completely but when I did I was healthier than before I got sick! Go figure. Thank you Dr Lissa, I love your new attitude and stories.

A doctor that talks sense! When I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, the doctor just handed me a prescription coldly and gave me no hope or insight in handling a chronic pain condition. I shortly developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and was bedridden. I had to heal myself, the biggest piece being with EFT (tapping) and releasing emotional pain from childhood and Wim Hof breathing technique.

Wonderful presentation thank you. I discovered the power of the mind many years ago . I had suffered from severe anxiety and depression as a child and teenager. Doctor prescribed medication but I was unable to work due to side effects of the medicine. So I studied meditation and Self-hypnosis and each night put myself into a semi-trance sending positive instructions to my subconscious each night before going to sleep . I had stopped the medication before beginning this self help treatment and at the 6 months stage I woke up one morning feeling a slight relief and lift from my chest which continued to noticeably improve over the next 3 months leading to 100% recovery. Greetings from James J in Limerick city Ireland

It's true, we can heal ourselves. I just willed away a couple of hand cramps, and I have willed pain away 1-2 other times as well. And if it's mental pain someone feels, simply call down the highest vibrations to wrap you in their healing energy, and if somehow that doesn't work, just simply take a shower and relax, and everything will feel so much better. People are too quick to prescribe drugs and other things, that's how the medical industry makes money. Although for more serious things like diseases and stuff, you should still see your doctor to get treatments to keep it from getting more serious, but it's ultimately up to you to heal yourself. Many people have recovered from "incurable" diseases because of their faith and the faith of their families. You don't even need to be religious to do this, it's a power that all of us have for we're all connected in spirit :)

Dr.Rankin is a wonderful personification of these ancient philosophies for the present times. I escaped an extremely toxic relationship that was making me dangerously ill. A fantastic Yoga philosophy book by Rammurti S. Mishri M.D. literally saved my life. However, the way it fell into my hands one day at a library is almost magical. I guess the decision to follow its guidance was the first prescription I wrote for myself. I went through years of turmoil rebuilding my life and rescuing my son but now we are well and happy. Brava Doctor Rankin! You are the change the health system needs. Thank you! 💗

Namaste. Thank you for sharing this amazing knowledge, all docs need to be empowered with, so beautifully. Experienced it today in my 86 year old mom...... who could barely walk into the ortho doctor's appointment and she came back feeling and walking so much better. All he did was listen to the history, get a few x-rays of her knee and leg, and announce to her loud and clear! that her knees and bone health were excellent for her age!! She was already on calcium , vitamin B capsules etc. And he prescribed a week of medication to elevate any pain or inflammation plus 2 weeks rest. Then he would give a few exercises. The healing I believe started as soon as he pronounced his diagnosis of excellent knee as well as bone health! So very true, that doctors not only give medication to cure but empower the healing process when they choose the right words and empower the patient and be the tipping point in their healing process. Empowering and healing the spirit of the patient makes all the difference. And the right belief in a patient works wonders. Our minds are so powerfull. We can achieve anything we believe with full faith. Thanks 🙏

Of course they could add as you suggest the belief in the body to heal. Not just the body as a machine.

Agreed Sapolsky's Stress docu is one of the best on youtube and has its place particularly with hierarchy and monkey stress analogies. But that wouldn't even fit here in Dr. Lissa's talk. She's speaking authentically from her own observations - a physician of which Sapolsky, PHD - is not. Him talking about spontaneous remissions or the placebo effect wouldn't even make sense. I honor that people have their own "tribe" and audience along with appropriate delivery.

@@pamelabrinker Hello Pamela. Great to hear from you. Her presentation really caught my eye when I heard her speak about the patient by the name of Mr. Wright, and the test drug called Krebozian. I had read of the account in law of attraction books many years earlier.

In my respectful appreciation to Dr. Lissa Rankin, M.D and mindful viewers. I could not remember how many times I have contacted with your groups to follow up, enjoy, evaluate all valuable health care research, experiences. May I comment: "I strongly agree with what you have done to share with public since I have trained, researched and applied all skillful, helpful, useful professions as you are to assist people since 1970 in the under development nation of war, Vietnam." I have made people who I serve to extend their life and enjoy their life without fear before transferring to next life. Secondly, caption on video is useful to me because English is my second language even I have published, public speaking in English worldwide. May I share this video to worldwide?

This is so good - I'd not fully realised the effects of hormones on body until now. Also the fact that placebo is fully recognised by trad. doctors, but they don't even bother to study it! Thanks so much for great learnings! Love it when scientifically trained docs go into alternative health and so do proper research, and altho there may not be too many double blind randomised trials on these methods, they look at best info out there at this present time. It's called progress, forward movement!

Am all about practicality. Am trying to figure out what courses to take in Quantum University. Am already a member of Unity Church. From my childhood I had wanted to become a medical doctor. It didn't turn out that way. However, I became a social scientist. Trust me I became a metaphysician, meaning that I have practiced "Mind over matter". Today you taught "Mind Over Medicine". I attended College of Metaphysics in Missouri at a branch on Hanging Moose Rd. Jackson Mississippi. Now what? Growth is all I know. Mathematics, Physics, & Biology were not my smooth sailing subjects in High School nor college. That was why I couldn't pursue Medicine. I withdrew passing from Registered School of Nursing, Hinds Junior College. Rankin County MS. 1981 or so. Is that your county? 😍. Your voice another voice of God. You speech is a great guidance & confirmation to me that I am on the right track. Remain beautiful, & blessed.

As a parent of 3 adult kids who chose to not communicate with or see us too often (as much as we'd prefer), I know their priorities impact us as parents. Yet I also don't want to be a demonstrative parent overstepping my relationship. We just need to let them know we're here for them, always 💕 them & spending time with them, and🙏🏼 they'll give of themselves to benefit our relationship (which boosts our wellness). In the meantime, I've chosen to embrace a mentoring relationship of mothers of preschoolers/ MOPS, and I ❤️ these sweet ladies. It never replaces how we miss our kids.

Im glad I found this video. Everything that she talked about it I came to natural conclusion myself, healed myself and my clients. However in my psychotherapy session neuro mirroring happens it is when my body and clients body “tuned in”. As Dr. said amygdala is relaxing and clients could finally feel their own body and have a deep connection with their True Self, body and mind then true healing happens.

Dr. Rankin(her grandfather) lived here in Eugene, Oregon & was an absolute Character! He drove from one of his rentals to the next in a rust bucket land yacht Cadillac. He owned several of the oldest homes in Eugene(affordable family homes that we crusty 1980’s Acid Punks lived in cause they were affordable with 5-8 people helping with rent. Doc Rankin died in the late 1990’s l,..he is missed. There are less & less of those beautiful old Eccentric Types gracing the face of this earth…those who look a fright yet are incredibly friendly & loving & are brilliant when honestly engaged in conversation. Doc Rankin was her Grandfather….

I find you so invigorating. I attend a Cancer Wellness Program for Survivors and those just beginning the journey of Chemo and/or Radiation. It's all free the delicious healthy foods and talks on some of the very things you were/are. Mindfulness ifs the theme throughout. We attend Gentle Yoga, Jesus, Buda etc, and some of the great leaders of Mindfulness. Centering Prayer, Silent days of Retreat.; thought provoking questions on our new journey in a different light. We have a physical therapist, Nutritionists, LCP's and LCSWs. All there to guide us, to challenge us. We have Top Chiefs from around the city cook a meal for us of healthy greens, quinoa, etc. Sometimes, I have to pinch myself that I'm part of this wonderful program. Namaste, Judi
