Me too. I love these "small role, big impact" games that simulate a small role in some strange social system, where you can subtly influence the society around you. "Papers Please" is the most famous example, but "The Westport Independent" is also kind of like that. It's a game where you play as a newspaper editor, where you can censor important information to spread fake news and have to sway the political beliefs of the people against the government.

don't think that that Oliver guy was insane, he just had a strong opinion on what reality is and dislikes fiction, but is otherwise a functional person even if his perspective comes across as emotionally distant, was sorta unnerving that you then proceeded to deep fry his personality.
@harleymitchelly55423 жыл бұрын
Psychology, even at the best of times has an element of normality to it. It's one of many reasons it, of all the sciences, needs an objective ethics board most, the difference between a novel quirk and something pathological can be a very fine line. Oliver's case could be a sign of many things, but, at least judging from his case docket, there's a good chance he wasn't as functional as you assume. Granted, I don't have his life story, and judging somewhat from the Steam trailers, there's a bit of RNG to patient creation, but if he's on your registry, and for the sake of argument grant that you're being sent to him for a legitimate reason as opposed to him asking too many questions about the city as would be expected given this is cyberpunk, he could be endlessly questioning things and lapsing into a sort of existential depression or obsessive behavior regarding the great questions of philosophy, neither of which are particularly functional. Perhaps he's begun expressing solipsistic sentiments and has quite literally begun questioning if he even exists, he did say the calculations were off so perhaps he believes he's in a simulation and thinks he's been gaming it, or he's entered into nihilistic depression if the comments about atoms is to be any indication. That he fried his personality can easily be chocked up to bad therapy. Madness is, to be blunt, preferable in many respects to a therapist who doesn't know what they're doing. Whether intended or not, ABG here's demonstrated what bad therapy can do. Destroy a personality and render them in a malaise. All the game does is fast-track the process. If it's following the Papers Please formula, no doubt that's going to be a part of the latent commentary brought on by this game's existence, you've been given control of someone's thoughts, pretty explicitly have the power to delete memories, and have to balance doing your job, doing it right, and paying your rent. If you want, you can be the state's hitman curing any and everyone with the technological equivalent of free lobotomies for everyone, you can do your best and cure as many as you can without ruining their personalities, or, as it seems, play an agent and bring down the city. Yes, I did go into a high-minded deal about a fictional character in the beta of a game. It is contemplative and your comment set the stage right.
@ICEknightnine3 жыл бұрын
@@harleymitchelly5542 it's not possible to go into more depth than the limited interaction within the game, for all anyone knows, outside of this interaction; he could be sitting in a chair all day demanding a scientific reason to leave the chair or some other nihilistic activity. But from the information that we do have, ignoring what the mind scanner protagonist summarizes about Oliver's demand for scientific data to motivate his interests becoming "pathological" and that there's a concern over his mental health which has brought him to the mind scanner in the first place. We know that he's trying to participate in relationships, if he was a depressed nihilist or was obsessively concerned with sorting out his philosophical values; he probably wouldn't even bother and we know that he is open to new information and isn't putting up social barriers between him and ABG (though i don't think any of the characters in the game do due to the protaganist's authority). We also know that "poor social performance" on its own isn't really something that screams mentally dysfunctional. I see it like this, Since the game revolves around making the decision of whether or not someone is insane or not before lobotomizing them, and not a deep world with realistic characters you have to interview for hours before coming to a diagnosis, you'd need to go by what information is actually within these interactions that would suggest the person to be insane otherwise if they haven't said or did anything considerably insane (or in this case: deserving of a *mild* lobotomy) then it's the player's call to say that they aren't. it's probably poor game design to have the protagonist allude to whether or not the character is insane before the player gets to make that decision, it's better if that's shown through the characters being diagnosed.
@harleymitchelly55423 жыл бұрын
@@ICEknightnine I'd honestly chalk that up to setting. This is Cyberpunk. Part of the territory is hard decisions, too little information about your surroundings, and your hand getting forced in ways you don't like it. The resident oppressive government entity is getting tipped off about people who are "potentially insane," and one of the ones shown is getting targeted pretty much purely because she's a popular media figure harboring antiestablishment thoughts. We aren't given much information, but that's part of the premise given you're an underpaid and overworked state psychologist being employed for not-good motives. The bean-counter is only given the beans he is supposed to count and nothing more. There's also indications that your "help" isn't requested by the patients. The DIY Mind Scanner and Ste-V are both other instances of people unlikely to seek help of their own volition, heavily implying that your patients are less than willful. The former legitimately thinks he's helping people and the latter is a raging narcissist, someone who generally never seeks help of any kind. I'd also say with both the emotionally dead patient that basically comes alive to inject you with what I can only presume are performance enhancing drugs in some mania nothing told you about and the callousness your devices have when you accidentally lobotomize your first patient that, "The UI does not tell you everything," is in full effect. This is also still a beta, there could definitely be room for "insane" patients who are just eccentric or sane presenting patients that are really dangerously insane. I'd also say that the very end also indicates that you might not be the one writing those reports, just stamping them. Your panel there seems to have a mind of its own, so who is writing those mockups of the patients, and what exactly is getting sent since the model's diagnosis explicitly says she's a danger to society in classic totalitarian fashion yet her getting ruled sane doesn't have any immediate effects? Either way, no one's actually told you your job is to be a therapist. Your job is to operate a mind scanner and fix the people on your list. If a major lobotomy accomplishes that, as far as the state is concerned it's still accomplished. That you have a mind scanner in the first place and your time per day is 200 units of unknown time also pretty much builds into itself that you're accomplishing things at an exponential rate, so if we don't get an answer, MST3K Mantra takes effect, and if we've got a good game we can set that aside. The bottom line here is that what was wrong with Oliver is unknown, but if we want to venture our guesses we need to fill in the blanks ourselves. I did ask that we grant that you're being sent to him for some semblance of good will, but that's purely because we'd otherwise be unable to say anything about him that would explain why you're there. We literally got nothing so it's fair to assume there's something about this we don't know since "it's above your clearance level," or some such dystopian justification. I can however at the very least say that if a therapist calls something pathologic, it means that it's unhealthy behavior, even if it's nominally good. Focusing in on his remarks about his ex, which were his words if Ste-V explaining how the scans worked is any indication, it doesn't sound like Oliver was trying at social interaction. He went through the motions, sure, but at no point was his heart in it, likely stemming from a deterministic outlook that can't abide by abstractions. He's likely unable to relate to others entirely, since you can't quantify friendship or relationships in a numerical value or data, and if you are given an accurate description of his state of mind, it is a fair assumption to say he has a non-functioning social life, and he would be in his job despite his outlook at this point instead of because of it. But of course, this is me taking a guess at it. We're likely going to get a lot of incomplete case file situations because that's the nature of this kind of game. You don't always get everything you need and are forced into grey situations.
@ICEknightnine3 жыл бұрын
@@harleymitchelly5542 Yeah, that makes sense, it could be justified that he was going through the motions but not actually putting in the effort to search for someone who shares in his ideals if he's not going to compromise on them for the relationship. It's also fair to say that there aren't a lot of people who would share in his materialist perspective but not so few to say that he is socially inept. It would seem that his logic obsessive personality doesn't give him the ability to foresee undesirable situations or determine what he wants out of life. I'd still rather give him the benefit of the doubt and say that life experience alone would help him realize how he and his perspective fits into society. I don't see how having a deterministic or non-deterministic outlook on life changes anything about a person (edit: i don't think that it's even alluded to that he believes in determinism, he's just a materialist though the two concepts are related). It's not like life necessarily looses all meaning if everything is determined. And meaning doesn't necessarily need to be abstract, it is usually built with reasoning based in material existence. Even the abstract itself is just an ambiguity of specific material components. Point is i don't think his perspective is so limiting to be considered a mental illness that he can't adapt out of (in contrast to "i am an oak tree" man), he probably just needs a normal therapist to sort out his daddy issues (which is the core cause of his aversion to the abstract) and not a lobotomy to any extent. If he was actually 100% serious about his stance against all abstractions and not just art and fiction, he would no longer use language since all words are abstractions to some degree. The greater Issue in the narrative is that the grey area is faced with two options for treatment: lobotomy or no lobotomy, and if the person isn't actually insane or out to murder someone the game states that there are likely to be complications with the treatment. So the obvious safer answer in these grey areas is to not give the go ahead on the lobotomy if the patient has a perceived better chance to recover on their own or through other means. So it doesn't really become a grey area at that point. moral of the story: ABG needs more performance enhancing drugs from that emotionless blockhead so that he can conduct """therapy""" at maximum speed on the behalf of *The Structure* .
@harleymitchelly55423 жыл бұрын
@@ICEknightnine When I use determinism, I'm referring back to his extremely scientific outlook. I got a bit of an implication that he does see much of a distinction between materialism and determinism at this point, as I believe the valid answer to the first question was "Follows Natural Laws." That, in and of itself, is just a logical position, but there's subtle hints that he's gone that extra step farther with it. Love is not love, it's merely a series of neurochemical reactions that are, judging from his experience with dating, fleeting and fickle and the word has no coherent meaning. Given that kind of outlook, it's easier to see how this would be completely socially alienating. You bring up that he wouldn't use language, but he merely has an extreme distaste for abstractions. He may very well use language but consider it a poor and crude way of communication, or is rationalized out that words do tie back to objective things (see positive reaction to graphing. "I like it when the shapes have meaning."). Either way, I don't think regular therapy exists in this world as an option. The Structure sees him as a malcontent to be fixed, and given this is a definite job big enough to warrant institutes and several levels of clearance, I doubt traditional therapy would have survived since mind scanning is so much more "economical" and it's not like we can go back in time to pre-punish daddy to stop the issues. There's nothing stopping you from finding out later that The Structure jails declared sane individuals who aren't brain scanned and that's going to be a big plot point later, or they employ a "Try until it works," method where if they don't like your sane declaration, they just send someone else the next day and just wait until someone busts out the headgear. (Before asking, Cat Lady didn't even get one day before she snapped.) This is Cyberpunk, and dystopia is the watchword. To that end, we don't actually know what these devices are doing to people in certain capacities. About the only definite one is the one that finds ideas in the person's mind and deletes them. All we know is that, eventually, you'll see a personality erasure and lobotomy end state. For all we know, the other treatments are just fast-tracked regular therapy and the lobotomization process is part of the fast tracking. Wouldn't want to rush brain surgery now would we? I'd honestly frame it this way, you're expected to be a mind scanner first and a therapist second from The Structure's point of view. If someone has issues, I genuinely would doubt The Structure would let independent practice be a thing since that doesn't deal with malcontents fast enough and is too far removed from their control to be allowed. Compounding this, cybernetic brain implants are an established thing, Ste-V's issue was explicitly that, and I have a sneaking suspicion that the jammer disease ties back to cybernetics one way or another, so perhaps therapy is literally impossible in some cases since it's a mechanical problem only a mind scanner can even hope to deal with, being both diagnostic and curative. We also have no idea what good implant work is to be frank. Someone else here said this was stuff out of Cronenburg, and Ste-V does look like he got the budget model of brain implants. (I think they forgot to leave space for the eyes.) Maybe Oliver here had an implant somewhere that was going haywire and caused a fixation on his childhood? His dad clearly wrote science fiction, I would not at all discount him being a futurist in some capacity and The Structure letting him get implants for the whole family. They're getting pinged about illness all the time it seems, so they've clearly got a good monitor game going. If you ask me though, I think our emotionless fellow is a druggie. They said he was a sense expert, that he's lost all interest, and that his job "came with a price," which does sound like a situation of sensory overload. Dude would probably be miserable if his brain could shut up enough to let him think, and if the devs were smart, they'd use a case like his to blow open your UI's accuracy. His final actions are not in line with his profile, and I've begun interpreting it as a desperate cry for help over what those needles do to people.

This reminds me of demonologie, you're patrolling a town with absolute authority on whether or not people need to suffer/die, and you even if they aren't insane/witches, you get paid for harming them regardless.

I remember making a text-based game on Python including psychological symptom based on words. However, it is more complex than it looks and I give up. Fun Fact is that the protagonist an amateur but psychologist enthusiast, believe the main fault is the brain. I love the atmosphere and theme. It is all about conformism.

This is an incredibly good game through it's metanarrative. As someone who both had to seek psychiatric help a long time ago, and as a family member of those institutionalized, Society has utilized psychiatric services to weed out and conform "non-thinkers" to their paradigm of groupthink for years. Society and Government, using the standards they desire as "neurotypical", utilize these services on a daily basis to straighten out the "knots" of people's thinking in attempt to make a unilateral society of like-minded thinkers only. Psychiatric services, in other words, have become a tool of the Neo-Ecclesiarchy denoting non-thinking individuals as "insane" in the same way a priest of the past declared someone Demon-Possessed. The "Sane" members of society (simply those who have the most neurotypical or society-benefiting personality traits) themselves will ostracize those with the Diagnosis of the Psychiatrics State Priests as they always have. Little do people know that these Modern-Age clergymen of the self-proclaimed God of the State essentially gather in monastic cabals to determine which other non-thinking traits to add to the ever growing list of Mental Demons. Treatments might as well be psychosomatic, a spiritually-damaging autohypnosis to convince someone that there is something wrong with them because the exorcist demands that there is indeed something wrong. Why else would they be there? Akin to the Plague Doctors of old issuing lead-based medicine, the pharmaceutical titans of the world always welcome more members to the fold, to tithe away their income towards their centers of worship for a "sound state of mind" as they issue their addictive placebos to the masses like communion crackers and wine at Mass. In the end, what you have is nothing more than a message that has and will be, **"CONFORM OR DIE."** You either die socially or worse. It matters not to the Neo-Ecclesiarchy of the State if one person lives or dies from their confirmation of demonic possession. Only that one more Demon has been rid of their ideal world as they continue to make a Hell of Heaven and a Heaven of Hell.

12:57 The patient was cured by being turned into Crazy Frog. "She will tear down anyone to get what she wants". I think the game tells you she is a narcissist psychopath or some other antisocially disturbed person. 33:47 the most scifi aspect of this game is that they still use faxes in the future.

When te personality bar is 0 its unreversable. So before you treat someone with the last personality block you might wanna increase the personality first before you could do so
