I plant my whole garden in grow bags. Do you think I should change anything to do that?
@Terri_StaufferАй бұрын
Been growing garlic for 5 years. I save my biggest bulbs to plant, plus I go to a local farm who sells a quart of garlic cloves for $9. Some nice huge cloves to plant, the smaller ones we eat. Works great since not sprayed with grow inhibitor’s, have done the same for potatoes. The seed garlic I see in stores is so tiny for over $4 a bulb now. I started by buying seed garlic from local stores and was always disappointed in the small bulbs. Then I was in the fingerlakes for the grape festival and found a guy selling seed garlic, huge bulbs. He took his time and explained to me how to grow big bulbs. That was when I started to grow huge bulbs of garlic, basically using biggest cloves, planting 4 inches deep and cover with mulch.

Hey Terri this might sound like a dumb question but wear are you measuring your 4 inch planting depth from. The bottom of the hole or 4 inches from the top of the clove?
@Terri_StaufferАй бұрын
@@patmiller7045 not a stupid question. It’s four inches from bottom of hole. You don’t want to plant the clove too deep as it will stunt growth. A good rule is no more then inch of soil above garlic clove.

Love growing garlic last year was first year,we put it in everything and planted rest already, made powder with small cloves

So the 7 inch off center spacing is pretty much the same as 3.5 inch spacing just staggered and not in a grid pattern. You could probably drop down to 3 inch spacing for even more weight, or go up to 4 inch spacing for bigger heads
@LabCookrАй бұрын
3.5 is a good middle ground between the 2. When i started growing garlic and saw 6 inch spacing it didnt make any sense to me when they only get half that in diameter

How about containers?

My experience is only with heirloom elephant garlic, a stand I inherited in 2011 when I bought properly. Frankly, I am as much interested in it as a landscape plant and source of scapes for floral arrangements. But I have plenty of mild-tasting large cloves for cooking if I bother to harvest. Some of what I dig are not clove pods but very large single bulbs that I call "mothers." I like to plant them because they produce huge plants. Thanks . . . I can use some of your information. I prepare with 2-3 inches of compost and a moderate serving of chicken litter organic fertilizer.

for other poor buggers like me, bullbiles are quicer then 5 growing sesons to get nice garlic,the rice sized bulbilles thakes longer time, 3-4 sesons but i grew 5 cm wide rokambole in two grow sesons. planted the bullbiles in pots, spring 2023 and the rounds in the ground at atum 2023, harwested end juli 2024. i guess the bigger bulbilles the quicker result, and it migth be more tricks to growing the smallest rounds\bulbilles then i got around to learn yet:)

What should I do if my garlic sprouts in the fall?
@Terri_StaufferАй бұрын
Leave it alone. It will still grow nice heads of garlic. Last year it got unusually warm after I planted it and it sprouted, still had nice large heads of garlic. 🧄 This was hard neck garlic.
