Yes, faulty comparison, useless experiment with immature seeds of any variety of plant. The first lesson should be, 'What's a viable seed or when is a fruit/veg ripe in order to produce a viable seed'.

The problem with starting seeds from the grocery store is most of those seeds are hybrids, so they will grow, and probably produce, but who knows what you will get. Most grocery store fruits and veggies are selected because of the shelf life, and ability to be shipped. Buying seeds gives you an amazing assortment of flavors and attributes that you can't get from the store. It was a fun experiment, but people are better off buying seeds, and saving seeds from their own plants. Thanks, it was interesting.

Two most Important things that we all should understand when it comes to seeds germination from direct fruit which is 1. Seed has matured and 2. Source plant from F1 Hybrid ( Because it may not germinate again )
@chstoney
@chstoney 8 күн бұрын
In the case of some annual vegetables like the squash, when saving up seeds or starting seeds from the store you might get plants with reduced productivity or different attributes (size, color, taste) than those you had previously. That is because the seed packets can contain so-called F1 hybrids, which means first-generation hybrids of two specific varieties that when interbred, produce a homogenous population with consistent characteristics that usually contains the best of both parents. When you plant the seeds from the F1 generation, you get the F2 generation, which is usually still very good but not as consistent in its properties as F1. Each subsequent generation is the more and more mixed bag as it regresses to the mean. That is one of the reasons why even non-GMO seed packets can be somewhat pricey (still cheaper than buying all those veggies grown from them, mind you).

Taking seeds from grocery store items only makes sense if it are not hybrids as they will grow but give unexpected fruits that are not always OK Also they often are weaker. Onions sjalots and Garlick work very good. Tomatoes, pepper and squash have a coating that prevents germination. Putting them in water for a day and dry then, will help. I've been very succesful with that. The cucumber does not always produce seeds and if there are, thet are only fertile if they are on the vine long enough. By that time you can not eat the cucumber anymore. Same with Zuchini. The peas were not ripe yet.

I grew everything you've mentioned from grocery store items, only tomatoes & butternut squash came out so well & tasted amazing. Pumpkin looked weird & was tasteless, peppers were small & just there. Cucumber didn't even germinate. I highly do not recommend growing from grocery store items, it's exciting but nope.

Cucumbers turn yellowish red when they are mature. Green Cucumbers don't have viable seed
@Pam-z7p
@Pam-z7p 7 күн бұрын
For both the peppers and cucumbers: the green vegetables are good for eating, but the seeds need to mature more with the vegetables themselves getting yellow or even red before harvesting. So basically, you experiment needed those to sit on the plant or counter to mature more before harvesting the seeds. Also, I understand that some produce sellers irradiate their vegetables to prevent the seeds from reproducing. Hence preventing the home gardener from using them instead of buying their products. More profitable for them.

1. If you want to plant seeds from vegies you buy at the store, buy "Heirloom" varieties, to make sure you are not getting hybrids, which will not breed true (though that might not mater to you that much). 2. A lot of vegies in the store are picked before they ripen, which means the seeds are not fully developed. In this video the pepper, cucumber, and peas were all not ripe (the cuc possibly was also a hybrid that develops few seeds). If you are saving your own seeds, let the fruit ripen on the vine (though you likely won't want to eat the cuc or peas if you do. The pepper will be fine). 3. If you are planting several varieties of each veg, you might accidentally make hybrids (really likely with squash). You may want to control where the pollen comes from by putting a small bag over the female flower, and tie it off. Then hand pollenate with a male of the correct variety. Have fun!

That's the key...when saving seeds from peppers, peas, cucumbers - they must be ripe or totally dried on the vine to make sure the seeds are mature. I saw a video ago where a person took seeds from a green bell pepper and germinated them, but he put the pepper in a paper bag and let it get ripe first before planting them out. It actually worked! 🏆

I advise you to check toxic squash syndrome. The toxicity associated with consumption of foods high in cucurbitacins is sometimes referred to as "toxic squash syndrome". The high concentration of toxin in the plants could result from cross-pollination with wild cucurbitaceae species, or from plant growth stress due to high temperature and drought. Store bought squash, cucumber or similar plants may have high chance of cross-pollination. That can increase the chance to grow toxic plants. For squash family plants the best is to use packed seeds.

doesn't seem like a fair comparison since seeds from the packages were planted into the soil and those from the grocery store were left in the vegetable and placed on top of the soil. If you had removed the seeds from the veggies (tomato/ pepper) and planted the seeds in the soil (5 per cell like the grocery for a total max of 15) then the experiment would have felt much more fair. To save seeds from your own homegrown veggies, let the seeds mature (as in the cukes and the peas. pea seed when the pods dry out on the vine are viable. I save mine each year and get great germination, same with tomatoes, peppers, squash, cukes, all of them. unless they are hybrid). It is interesting though to see that just placing the slices on the soil had some results.

I would love to see you do an experiment with onion seedlings. I have heard conflicting opinions about trimming seedlings and not giving them a “haircut“ I think that I’ve seen that you grow from sets but I grew mine from seed and I am thinking about doing my own experiment this year and splitting mine, trimming half and not trimming the other. I’m a relatively new gardener but was very excited to grow onions last year for the first time (from seed) They turned out pretty good but I wondered if they would have been bigger if I had not trimmed them.

It may but you get some weird things. You can however get a cutting from a real avocado and graft it onto the avocado you grow from store bought. My oranges and lemons grew and then stopped. My fig thing grew and then stopped. I have given up on store bought stuff for growing.

This comparison doesn't make sense. If you're going to use counting to indicate germination percentages, you'd need to start with counting the number of seeds of each set, not just the ones from the seed packs. Planting the fruit material with the seed provides an environment that promotes mold and damping off. The seeds should be dried or fermented before planting. In nature, the fruit would dry into the seed, then would germinate on top of the soil, so this isn't mimicking the natural process either. Your green peppers were likely not ripe, so their seeds were not mature if that's the case. Which variety of peppers were they? If jalapeño, they would get to show red coloration before planting to ensure good germination rates. Toxic Squash can result from planting seeds that are not fully stabilized, and since you don't know if the parent plant's growing environment contained multiple varieties of squash, you can't know if the plant resulting from seed saving will be toxic or not. It's never an issue to experiment with seed saving and growing new plants but you shouldn't expect to get the same variety, and you shouldn't count on getting anything edible. If it happens to be edible, great! I believe the variety of cucumber you had as a seedless English cucumber which is why it did not contain seeds.

You could do a full season experiment with that butternut squash. My guess is if you grow out those plants, the fruit they produce would not be true butternut squash. I've tried seed saving... from a survivalist point of view it makes sense, but from a practical point of view it is just too time consuming and you have to worry to much about hybrid plants and cross-pollination for it to be viable for most gardeners.

Yes and they are a lot cheaper if not free... If you want to do pepper seeds, pick from a mature (red, orange or yellow) pepper. You can also germinate the dry pea and bean you get at the grocery store. They are really good for sowing at the end of the season and feed your soil. For cucumbers, you might want to pick a large cucumber variety, not the English style cucumber (snake cucumber) shown in this video. The large cucumber will contain seeds but you really want to leave the cucumber in an open area and let it turn yellow for the seeds to be remotely viable... I wouldn't bother trying grocery store cucumber seeds, to be honest. But you can definitively grow the squash and pumpkin. :) Zucchinis probably won't work either, they are picked too early.
@Murlockingqc
@Murlockingqc 9 күн бұрын
If you grow onions from the roots, you will most-likely not get any bulbs, but a lot of green onions tops to pick. If you leave them long enough, they could split and next year you will either get bulbs or flowers with seeds that you can collect and sow new onions that will produce bulbs.

Most of the time it will, plants biggest goal ist to reproduce which means producing fruits and/or seeds. But you dont know for sure which characteristics they will have. Cross polination or offsprings from F1 Hybrids can give you different characteristics in taste, form, color and so on. And with squash / pumpkin you can even get bitter fruits which are dangerous/ lightly toxic (if its bitter dont eat it! if you do eat more of the bitter stuff it can give you ALOT of GI problems and if its alot, you can even die. )
@ColoradoTodd
@ColoradoTodd 8 күн бұрын
As I'm watching the start of this video, my prediction is that the squash will do fine, the tomato may sprout, the snap peas probably won't, as they look pretty immature, the cucumbers are extremely unlikely to sprout since they're harvested young, the chile will probably not sprout since it's green, and the onion will "sprout" and grow green, but probably not make a bulb. Just my guesses...

Store-bought cucumber is probably parthenocarpic = no viable seeds. Store bought tomatoes are picked green & exposed to gas to turn red, better to use a homegrown tomato. Green peppers aren't ripe. Squashes will cross-pollinate; you might not get pure seeds for the following year = Franken squash.

Your peas, peppers and cukes were visibly doomed from the start. All were harvested before full ripening. Just because the seed structure exists in the plant doesn’t mean the seeds are ripe either within the body of the fruit. Having watched seeds gathered before, you didn’t have a woody half fermented cucumber, or a tough papery old pea. Your choice of peas were like trying to get beans from a green bean. There were peas from the grocery store that would sprout, but more like chickpeas and lentils. Your peppers likewise were way too young. It would have been more interesting to try from dry red peppers. Like chile ancho. Heck I wonder if dry hot pepper seeds from pizza box packets would sprout. Just saying. I watched the video even though no surprises. You can’t judge peppers by tomatoes because they’re both nightshades. Potatoes are nightshades. Here are some grocery store seeds/starts that would make a more interesting video, although some might take a while to develop. Strawberries. Celery. Blueberry. Ginger. Blackberry. Chamomile from teabags. Pinto beans. Canteloupe. Some other spices, like cumin or coriander. Pineapples are doable but are biennial. Mango, papaya, pomegranate, nopales. Peaches and plums and lemon s and limes. Probably not key limes, but i hope for the meyer lemons in my kitchen. Brown rice will sprout. Etc.

Anyone with any knowledge of any of the vegetables you did this experiment with could have told you in advance what your results would be. Either you're very uninformed or you're faking it for the sake of pretending you didn't know the results going in, either way, taking money from people to share your 'expertise' is a scam.
