Thanks for your great videos! I have watched you struggle a bit with too much solder from time to time. I've found that a smaller tip helps with that. The small screwdriver type work well for me.

Hi Brian. Thanks for your comment. I had just purchased a new iron just prior to recording these videos and also acquired a bunch of tip styles I was not used to. Excuses aside, I do have a bad habit of not cleaning excess solder from tips -- I am consciously working on that issue. 😊 I appreciate the positive feedback. Thanks very much.

Very nice. Love the intro! I would imagine that there will also be slight voltage losses in the cable by the time it reaches the C64, especially under load. The Bwack savers I fitted inside some of my C64s seemed to cut out at around 5.43v. The Carlson savers I bodged together from random mis-matched scrap parts seemed to do about the same (lol) but, apparently can drift with temperature so are not so great to put inside the machine. Keep it up.

I have ordered parts from China to see if I can put together reasonably-priced kits for people but my order is still not here after 90 days -- so frustrating. On another note, glad to see you back. I watched your Amstrad video the day but have failed to comment yet. Hopefully, you are getting back into the swing of things and making more videos, which I always enjoy.

Hi Wes. Good thinking. A little secret, I actually did that originally but ended up desoldering the pin headers (there are a few shots in the video where you can see old solder marks on the pin header through holes). I can't remember my reasoning for removing them. 🤔

I have found the mechanic solder paste is not very good and it left little solder balls all over my board, but the chipquik was a lot better and gave very nice clean shiny solder when I used it in my DIY re-flow oven.

Hey MindflareRetro I had a bit of an over sight when ordering parts for my c64 saver. Didn't realize on your last video that you had a parts list made up. I ordered 47uf 10v caps instead of 25v, the 10v ones should work fine on the boards right ??? I mean it is rated at double the circlet voltage.

Good work as usual. My only question is, are we not delaying the inevitable by using a C64 Saver? If your PSU over volts and the Saver cuts off the power then I assume the PSU is now useless and needs replacing, as this is going to keep happening. Or am I missing something? Thanks.

bwack I can see the efficacy in that, but eventually you’re gonna have to buy or build a new PSU. I’m not taking anything away from the effort, however, I just got a used breadbin model and since I know very little about building PSU’s and my hands are failing (probably can’t solder well), I just flat bought a new PSU from keelog.com. I’m not going to be using the OG PSU at this point. Again, not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. Thanks.

Great video and fantastic soldering! Has anyone ever just placed a 7805 inline with the power supply? Does that protect the C64 sufficiently? I’m assuming it would at least not cut the voltage suddenly.

Hey Josh. Thanks for commenting. Interesting question. I have never seen a 7805 used inline with the power supply. Having said that, the 7805 require a minimum input voltage of around 7V, so one would have to know that their PSU was way out of spec and outputting a very high voltage before connecting a 7805. Although, in line with your thinking, I have seen a UBEC (a little step-down converter device) used in out-of-spec PSUs -- there's a video somewhere on KZbin IIRC. I think UBECs require a slightly lower input voltage than a 7805 and they do not get as hot..

Thanks MC1173. I wish I was an advanced user - practice makes perfect. It didn't translate visually very well in the video, but the C64 Saver PCB is so small, it was difficult to work around the camera and record the soldering process. Anyway, patience always pays off. Thanks for commenting.

I've build 2 of these and It won't work for me, whatever the input voltage is, it just seems to pass through... the over voltage protection does not kick in. I have double checked all components, I used some components from Australia stores but all values were the same. I closed the pins on the 2 headers as not using the add on board. Any ideas?

@@TotalMK I appreciate the reply. I tried a solution that I read on the github page to swap out one of the resistors with a different value and ended up completely messing up the PCB. Thankfully I have 10 more so I'll just try it again and carefully test each of the components before putting it in. I am sure that I was testing the pinout correctly though, and prior to destroying the PCB I tested up to 7V without protection kicking in.

Hey Doc64! I talk about this a little bit in my upcoming Part 3 video. I measured a 1.1ms fall time from 5.47V to 0V -- see scope image here, bit.ly/3bnU8cW. I am not sure about the possibility of damaging chips. Perhaps, @bwack knows.

I find it ironic that you use "No clean flux" (which I went to look for on amazon) and then right after used "flux cleaner", (yes, I looked for that as well).

Yeah, that is ironic, for sure. I think they call it "no clean" because you can use it for small solder jobs and not worry about cleaning it off, as there are no harmful additives that would cause future damage to the board. I find that this flux is quite sticky and I prefer to have squeaky clean PCBs. This is the one I am using in the video, amzn.to/37hqsfb.

One question, your BOM has links to 1/4 watt resistors but in the video you stated you are using 1/8 watt. I ordered some of these board and they are very tiny. There is no way that 1/4 resistors will physically fit, I have tested a 1/8 watt and it does fit. Unless I am reading something wrong from your BOM links, you may want to change it to point to 1/8 watt resistors.

Hi Mike. Nice catch, as I did misspeak in the video. The BOM is correct -- these are the exact parts I ordered and used. I selected Stackpole Electronics resistors because they are rated at 1/4W and have small dimensions, 0.070" Dia x 0.130" L (1.78mm x 3.30mm). My first order (used in the video) were from Arrow.com, and I have a very recent order of the same resistors from DigiKey and they are the same. You would be good to go with those resistors.

Hi Colin. Thanks for your question. I have a genuine Hakko FX-951. I used to have a Hakko FX-888D, which is a great tool, but I found that I wanted something that I could quickly swap out tips on easily in the middle of a soldering session and the FX-951 allows me to do that. That said I couldn't justify the price of that upgrade until a local electrons supply place had a crazy Hakko sale so I pulled the trigger and sold my FX-888D to recoup some of the cost.
