I have been vaporing 10 and a 1/2 years now and refused to use a mech mod untell 3 years ago because learning from you about batteries and ohms laws and doing my own study to feel confident and safe enough to do so. So thank you Battery Mooch! Oh and I have had 2 batteries that had A small amount of voltage on then but were dead with no venting or damage on them that just didn't work. I put both on charger for about 4hrs. 1 still dead 1 said full charge on the charger. The full one I got like 2 small hits and then dead and wouldn't charge after that and they were 18650 Efest batteries about 3yrs. A go. I buy 12 batteries every year to year and a half and vaping for 10 + yrs I have seen a lot of batteries lol.

I keep the old ones and use them for flashlights and other things. I luckily have never had a castostrophic failure in the last few years of using mech tubes, however I studied your posts on the forums for years before evem touching a mech! Thanks for making me feel "safe" while mech-ing. Edit: all approximately three dozen batteries ive used are brand name LG , Samsung, or Sony.

I don't believe I've ever had a battery fail in the way you've described. Generally, as they get older, I start to replace them when the charge is not optimal but the battery still functions. I am probably playing it overly safe, but I hold those things mighty close to my face so I figure it's ok to be a little more cautious. I think I've probably disposed of more because I'm clumsy and damaged the can more than anything. Now that I say that I'm going to have to find some wood to knock on. I'm placing an order for some new 20700s next week and now my superstitions are making an appearance. Wishing you and your family good health and well being Mooch!

This happened to me one time, but it’s human error. I accidentally reversed one cell in a parrallel setup.😲 I know! It’s f***ing scary. Luckily for me, it didn’t vent. One of the cells just died, completely. Must be that CID tripping. It was a sony vtc 5a. Since then, I always double check my battery orientations before I fire my parallel mechs. I place both batteries at the same time to make sure they’re in the same orientation. It’s good safety practice. 👊😤

Me too - I put the batteries in with one the wrong way round, saw the wraps start to 'boil' from the negative end - took them out as soon as possible. They were HOT. I left them to cool - checked voltage (around 4.1V), 2 hours later 4.0V - the next day I took them to the recycle bin in my local supermarket. Scary.

Hey Mooch, Great video! As you know (If you remember our discussion) It happened to me with a Molicel 20700A, got it from IMR (where I get 90% of my cells) worked fine for a month or two and just died, 0 Voltage! no damage, no hard use, good charging/cycles (3.3-3.5v to 4.2) on a Hohm Base Charger. Just died out of blue! the CID didn't pop as you saw and no damage guess I just got one of those "1 in a million" I just got 2 more as they are amazing 20700's. I love that you did this video and discussed all you had told me previous and put it all in a great very informative video! Im curious if you have had many more of these cases brought up to you!? Thanks for another great video, Mooch. Weird timing since i literally had a battery die last week. It was a Golisi S35 21700 used only in regulated mods since purchased November 2018. Regularly rotated with another purchased at the same time for my single battery mods. Put it in the charger and ensured it registered as charging (at .5 since a couple other batteries were already in the first 2 bays) but when I came back - nothing. Dead. Weird.

I had a battery (18650, VTC5 or 6) go hot on me once, although I don't think it vented (i.e. released hot gases). I took it outside and set it on the walk away from the house to cool for awhile. When I checked on it later it had cooled off and I was not surprised to find that it no longer worked (even though I didn't know you at that time). When I opened the (regulated) mod to replace the battery I found that it had become hot enough to melt the solder on the microchip which I found embedded it the plastic wrap of the battery.

As per coincidence I got two batteries dying on me the past few weeks: 1 Sony VTC5A and a Samsung 25R. From the first one I don't remeber the circumstances. The Samsung was one of two married batteries I left in a regulated mod (not Yihi) for a couple of months. While one Samsung drained down to 3.4V, the other one drained completely, multimeter showing no voltage at all.

Hi Mooch! Good vid as allways. I've been vaping 8 years now. I've had one battery failure. I was vaping with my og noisy cricket. I'm sure you know that mod but it's a series mech. I had brand new pair of vtc5a's in and an rda with .4 ohm dual coil setup. I pressed the switch and heard a weird sound and felt the mod and the switch get really hot really quick. I screwed the switch lightning fast and pulled it out. The cell below the switch came out with the switch. Yes it had welded itself to the switch. No explosion or fire but I'm sure I was just moments away from that. After a quick change of underwear I checked my setup and everything else and no shorts or anything that would explain this. I know my onions what comes to setups and mechs but don't know why this happened. I guess it was just a bad cell. It was a genuine Sony from a well known supplier. As I said brand spanking new pair first time in use. Keep up the good work Mooch.

This Friday morning I came into the kitchen and instantly smelled the dead battery :( I left the unregulated mod standing over night, it had (!) low voltage, short circuit and polarity protection but something went wrong and the VTC4 in it vented. The top of the mod is discolored, the spring from the switch burnt away and probably nothing left from the electronic above :( Oh, the isolation on the battery still looks fine. I suspect an internal short somewhere between battery and electronics.

I diligently TRY to be as safe as possible and constantly respect my batteries’ power and volatility....and ratings (thanks to you!!!👍). I rest them, rotate them and ALWAYS charge them in a quality external charger. I am dumbfounded by those willing to try to save a couple of dollars on batteries to put in a mod/tank setup that probably cost +$100 *AND THEN PUT IT IN THEIR MOUTH REPEATEDLY!!!!!* 🙄🤦♂️👊 I have (over the years) had many begin to drop too fast, increased internal resistance and piss me off to the point of replacing them....and even had a friend place my MCM Panzer Golden Army down ON THE UNLOCKED TAILCAP FIRE BUTTON....which is how it sat, cooking my coils, flooding ALL the juice out of the air holes and torching my cotton until I HEARD it hissing several minutes later.....somehow the battery survived (though never the same)....it was an Orbtronic SX30 High Drain 30A (rated) button top. I was pissed at my friend....impressed with the battery’s resilience and learned a VALUABLE LESSON..... *I* handle these with care, do research and watch Battery Mooch in a constant effort to be as “safe” as I can.....many (most?) do not and I need to be aware of that when “they” are around my devices!! I have NEVER had one vent or go into a thermal runaway and pray that I never do...which I shouldn’t, as I DO practice the safest informed handling and use of them and ALWAYS operate them with at least a 10% margin of error.

I’ve had an Aspire 26650 randomly pop on me. It wasn’t in use or the charger, it was sat on my side for about 6-7 months and the valve on the positive terminal just popped and it was loud. The battery started to hiss, I grabbed it and it wasn’t even warm at all and I buried it positive terminal down in the mud. It’s still sat there now not doing anything. The cell was about 2 years old and about a year and two months I’ve noticed it wasn’t holding a full charge, it held up to 70-80% charge and would last a day before it got shelved. During the time I was using it I was getting nearly two full days of use out of it. What could have caused it to pop like it did?
@batterymooch3 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is a weird one. It hadn’t been used in months and popped? That you couldn’t fully charge it sounds like it was damaged and/or had reached the end of its life from normal use. I am only guessing but perhaps an internal short circuit from “dendrites” (metal deposits where they shouldn’t be from the cell aging) was slowly growing and finally reached the point where the dendrites could touch and the short circuit created enough gas to pop the top venting disk. I don’t know what really happened though and can only guess. Older cells can lose performance or fail in all sorts of ways from several different causes, each having some effect that adds up. Thanks for telling me about this though!
@metalvape90potv283 жыл бұрын
@@batterymooch No problem. I was chatting to a few people on the Planet of the Vapes forum and they’ve came to the same conclusion that it might have been dendrites shorting out in the battery causing it to randomly pop like it did probably due to a build up of gas in the cell. The cell was old and got good use out of it, would never exceed what the cell can do. It was rated for 20A continuous discharge and the most I would use is 8A so the cell wasn’t abused. Except the negative part of the battery wrap that had peeled a bit. Another user on the Planet of the Vapes forum had a similar incident with two of his Samsung 30Ts.

I have 39 cells in the 21 mods and one flashlight I use daily, plus one trio of 18650s, two pairs of 18650s, 5 single 18650s, 3 pairs of 20700s and a pair and a single 21700 and a solitary 26650 as spares. I've had one Ijoy (26650) and two Vapcell (21700 purple 3750mAh 24A CDR) just go to 0v, in all cases fairly new cells and after resting for a while after charging at a maximum of 1A to 4.20v (and I checked that terminating voltage on the chargers - different ones in each case, using a logging multi-meter, that was far from cheap - both chargers were accurate on terminating voltage as far as I could determine). All being fairly new cells, I am reasonably confident that all were manufacturing defects, as they'd been treated pretty carefully both mechanically and electrically - at least during my ownership. I have no way of knowing if a box of them fell off a forklift somewhere between the factory and me, or the local post office treated the package badly despite the labelling. Even inside a hard case, that kind of shock could break any spot-weld which was less well made, and all were Chinese. I only have 1 26650 mod, so may give up and use 18650s in it (oh how I wish for an extra 5mm height to get a 2n700 in) and only one 20700, so if I lose another set of cells in that I may go to 18650s as well. Or I may strip the mod to see if 5 more mm can be gained - there appears to be space enough vertically, and a 2.5 or 3mm thick adapter (AKA vape band!) should be easy :-) The first two cells (Efest metallic purple 18650s) I ever bought are still in use, although have eventually (3 years) been relegated to the flashlight and its spare. So 3 out of 64 cells, all Chinese, and less common sizes. Seems like hand spot welded to me, and probably faulty from day 1.

In fact, all my batteries live in the cradle until I use em but on only those two mentioned pair of batteries I experienced fully charged but unusable. Heck, my vtc4s live to a ripe old age of 2 years before I decided to chuck em. Again, leaving them on the xtar charger full-time till I'm about to use them.

I have a pair of the Vapcell gold 20700s, so will keep a close eye on their behaviour (they're next in line for cycling through my Ijoy Captain PD270). I store batteries in married sets in silicone condoms in-house, or hard cases for carrying around, never in the chargers. Just about any charger is built down to a price, and one surge on the utility power could blow the protections - although the utility power in my man-cave is protected by a 3kva UPS :-)

@@phillee2814 with mooch's report, I try to reason the deaths to overcharging (CID tripping), but living in the cradle after being fully charged, if anything else, the batteries actually go into discharge without triggering the charger into an auto charge mode. Xtar will only go into charge mode again if: you happen to break contact or, if the mains breakers reset. And those didn't happen when the batteries died. Thankfully in 6 yrs ive only had 1 battery vent, it was a samsung a that i took out of a battery pack. Ive not had any go into thermal runaway(knock on wood). Usually i just stop using batteries because they dont hold as much charge as they used to. Like a pair of vtc5a will usually get me thru the better part of a day, but after ive been using them for a year theyre only lasting for a couple hours. When i recharge them instead of my charger showing that 2000 mah was put back into them when theyre new, the charger will say they only took in 7 or 900mah. Or like with sig mods the chip shows "real time" sag and the mod will say weak battery, even though it says the batteries are at 90%, when i go to take a drag it'll sag down too far and give me a weak battery warning. Thats when i stop using my batteries. One of the reasons i really enjoy my xtar chargers because it tells me roughly how many mah is being put into a battery. My most recent ones that i recycled were some 30qs. When they were new they would take around 2200mah from 3.4v to 4.2, but after about a year they were only taking in 1000mah. Chargers that tell you the mah can be a big help and tell/show ya when your batteries are on their way out.

Watching power hour #13 ATM. I haven't gotten around watching this episode yet. But I have had 4 real VTC5a's (bought from IMR and 18650batterystore) go dead on me. the first one happened 3 or 4 years ago and I asked you about it on a live show and I guess you hadn't had much experience with them going dead because you gave a "well your charger may have or mod blah blah" (I can't remember exactly what you said. It wasn't mean or harsh just not an explanation that was helpful I know you tried I am not berating you if it sounds that way). Basically dismissed it as a user error. To be fair I do use them pretty hard. About 0.07 - 0.08 in a single battery mech. Which I know is pretty hard but I only take a couple pulls then sit it down. But I am glad that it is now a known thing. I will watch this later to get my explanation. I just came to comment to give you more info to add to how many have failed or whatever they do.
@batterymooch4 жыл бұрын
A charger fault or mod fault is definitely not user error and I was not even trying to hint that it was user error. 🙂 There’s just no way I could have figured out what happened to your batteries so I mentioned the most probable causes...device failure. There were certainly other possible things, also not user error related, that could have been the cause but there just wasn’t time to go into detail. Using any cell with a 0.07-0.08 build will can definitely cause failure though as it severely stresses the tabs, spot welds, and other hot spots inside the cell. Is this “user error”? Folks could debate that for years. It is above the cells’s rating though and that causes damage that can accumulate and cause the battery to fail. So, it might have been one of the devices or it might have been the way they were used. No way to know though. Thanks for posting about your failures here!
@korgeth4 жыл бұрын
@@batterymooch Thx for the reply. Further info is the ones that have failed for me have all been new. They failed within the first 10 charges. I no longer use VTC5a's in my mechs as the 20s have them beat by miles in voltage and they stay so much cooler.

Is it normal for a device to drain batteries unevenly. Like to the point where they are drastically different or is this possibly a bad batch of batteries? I tend to the side of the mod of course since I'm using Samsung and I don't see how this can happen to a whole lot of them but I find it odd when I put in Sony batteries and they come out just fine, totally even. Very confusing. Wismec RX Gen3 Dual was the mod this happened with...has anyone else noticed this with that mod?
@batterymooch4 жыл бұрын
The big manufacturers won’t release bad batches of batteries so it could be batteries that are old, were stored badly by the reseller, or they are fakes. Or one of the Samsung batteries has started to reach the end of its life so it drops its voltage faster. Some mods are badly designed and can unevenly drain their batteries but it would happen with any brand battery I would think. How are you seeing that they are uneven? The display in mods can be very inaccurate. Mark the one battery that seems to be lower than the other and note which slot in the mod you used. Then fully recharge the batteries and swap slots in the mod. If the same battery is still lower then it’s probably the battery. If the other battery is lower then it’s just the mod not showing you accurate voltages/levels.
@anthropicPanda4 жыл бұрын
Battery Mooch Good idea. I was contemplating doing a similar thing with marking them. An old pair of VTC4s are the only other batteries that go in this mod and they’re in perfect shape, haven’t been unevenly drained at all. I’m mainly getting my info from my charger. The mod itself I hardly ever trust since I’ve had a few Fuchai 213s that have crazy weird readings. I’ll definitely give that a try though. Appreciate the thoughts. I get all my batteries from imrbatteries, I’d like to think they’re respectable. If it is the batteries, I guess I’ll have to watch the others since I bought a big order of 30Qs and 20S’s. None of my 20s have had any issues thankfully since they’re going in a series mod. The others are in a regulated, I made sure to tell my gf not to let them get past 50% charge just in case.

Kris Wk if the charger doesn’t have a voltage display then don’t use the “bars” to estimate how full a battery is. It only takes a tiny fraction of a volt to switch a bar on or off if the battery is right at the threshold. It looks like a big difference between the batteries but it’s not. I don’t know if this is what is going on with your batteries but percentage displays and “bars” can fool us.

I've never had a battery die on me. I have dented some postive contacts, especially a new batch of 25R's I bought recently. From the 20-30 people I've known to regularly vape, I've only ever heard of two people that had an actual issue, besides general degredation over time. One put the battery in a loose pocket with keys and it short-circuited and ignited the bag. Totally his misuse. The other was a friend using a very questionable cell and a shitty mechanical clone mod that short-circuited. The battery "bloated" and was very hot. He just threw in some part in his yard and left it there for a few days.

Yes i have experienced that.... I buy authentic VTC4 ever since and i couldn't count anymore how many batteries died..... Suddenly, or due to use.... Specially before when I tried the LG Choco one, i used it before on my RDTA BOX, and it just died after 2 uses..... Since maybe 2015, i got more than 20 pairs, some of those pair is a triple battery pair..... So it's not that frequent

I think my vtc4 is 18 years old and does not drop beyond 4.16v even after months, but it loads in 9 hours from 3.7v to 4.20v and it drops instantly to 4.18v does not hold 4.20v and in any case I think this be fantastic!!

IIRC, the VTC4 was released in 2013 but I’m glad yours is still working well for you!

I use Samsung 30Q cells pretty much exclusively. Never had a failure. Had them get weaker over time as all batteries tend to do, but never a total failure with one. I DID have one 0v failure with an LG chem cell once. Worked fine one minute, totally dead the next. Never figured out what happened.

I bought four Basen 26650 60A, I charged them up and kept them in the drawer, never used them yet. One cell after 4 months leaked (vented) out the positive cap and left clear slippery stuff under the terminal and rusted by the time i realized this. Basen is made in China. I left messages but got no reply from them.

Ouch...the dangers of using the cells from the smaller China factories, higher failure rates. Unfortunately none of the big companies make 26650’s. 😔

@@batterymoochI also have bought some Sofirn 26650 with 5500 mAh, again out of 4 cells, 1cell self discharges to almost nothing in 1 week. I got a refund from them at least.

Actually that is such a coincidence that you mention how a battery was good as said by my mod and it wont fire a .3 ohm coil. Just last night this happened granted my batteries are about 3-4 months old but I ahave a system of battery alternation so it's just one big cycle of 15 batteries. They were good just before I recharged them . Perfectly fine. After that they would charge really fast, drain really fast. Never got hot. Just ended up throwing them away. They were imren 18650 on the wrapper they say 3000 mah 40A ( I know I know) 20CD . The I'd number I guess you would call it, under the actual wrap reads imren80515c. I just figured they were old but a coincidence none the less. Oh yeah yellow wrapper red print. Also if I use a molicel 18650 35A I dont remember the mah. If I use it on a reliable mech mod single cell at anywhere from .12-.18 ohm dual coil, how long would you say those batteries should be renewed?
@batterymooch4 жыл бұрын
It depends on how often you take a draw, how they are charged and stored, etc. IMO you should get a couple years from them, at least, unless there’s some abuse going on somewhere. There’s just no good way for me to estimate that though.

@@batterymooch ok , because I had these for a little over a year but during so I was kinda rough on them as they were my hardest hitting batteries I had so I ran pretty low ohms. I was recently noticing they started to lose their performance. Looks like I'll get some newbies. Thanks much. As always great content in your videos. Super informative.
