I don't agree with "thinking positively". I think intelligent people are some of the most emotionally frustrated people out there. It has to do with an analytical mind. If you have a tendency to analyse you will over analyse your own thoughts, feelings and emotional responses. It also has to do with an inability to connect with the average person since as a highly intelligent person you can't find much in common with them. And that can cause a great deal of depression and social anxiety. You're also more likely to be eccentric, further alienation ensues. People of average intelligence are more likely to accept what life throws at them since they won't have a tendency to analyse. They are more likely to accept the happy with the sad since they find meaning in the average lifestyle. And they're more likely to fit in with the people around them as they share a great deal of things in common with the average person. And they're more likely as a result to exhibit social and emotional intelligences rather than the linguistic and logical intelligences of a stereotypical genius with a high IQ.

The "being an atheist makes you more likely to be a genius" line is complete bullshit. Johann Sebastian Bach made quite a name for himself as a genius musician who wrote "The Well tempered Clavier", which has piano/harpsichord pieces written in every major and minor key, in addition to several other types of pieces (I don't know off the top of my head), and he was professed to be a very God fearing man. Most composers and other musical geniuses devoted songs and other pieces to God or other higher powers; look at where we got Gregorian chant from. Albert Einstein, I believe, was also Jewish, and Benjamin Franklin was a Deist who was raised as a Puritan.

I have a very high IQ but I don't match with everything stated here. I do prefer not to sleep at night and sleep is boring, I am an atheist but I'm not left handed. I'm actually ambidextrous. I'm an introvert and some genius inventors were loners. It is difficult to find friends or obtain romantic relations because it's rare to find someone who can carry on discussions with me. Most times I'm my own best company. I don't agree with the lying aspect as I believe lies destroy trust and trust is very important.

I could prove that to you by sending you a picture of her curled up in my lap or you could even come to my house and see her. +Paul Jordan I read your argument and it was extremely interesting to me. So different than the usual "discussion" (quarrel rather or fight) whenever the question of faith is concerned. I see your point and my thoughts on the subject were similar and I'd love to discuss it with you more thoroughly. I am a Christian though, not an agnostic. But I agree that agnosticism is the only truly reasonable approach to the problem. Atheism is not. Atheism is just believing in science and non-existence of God and it's virtually the same as faith in God. It doesn't have much to do with intelligence (in my opinion) but rather with emotions (but here I am stepping onto psychologic territory). This is similar to that: let's say you think that all women are cruel. It's obviously not true but if you think so, does it mean you're stupid? It rather means you are deeply hurt and cannot cope with the emotions which make you think so and say so to anyone who wants or doesn't want to listen. As for faith, it's also unreasonable as it is not based on reason. Then, who says that reason is the perfect tool to know the truth? It's just the only tool we have. As I said, I am a Christian, not because I discovered that God exists and can prove it to everyone. I would never be able to do so as the very concept of God excludes the possibility of proving His existence in a scientific way. In other words, if we assume that God exists, He would be the Absolute and as the Absolute he would not be just the part of the world waiting to be discovered and proved (as physics or chemistry) but He would be beyond the world and the world itself at the same time. As such, He couldn't be discovered and examined within the constraints of the physical world. The truth is we cannot prove the existence of God even if He really exists. Because if He existed He surely wouldn't want to be discovered and "proved" anyway. Thus the only reasonable thing we can do is to accept that we can never know the truth and became agnostics. So why do I believe? Because I have my own personal proof, which for the rest of the world wouldn't be considered proof at all. It's like seeing a thing with your own very eyes but your testimony wouldn't be considered as proof unless other evidence comes in. If there is none - it didn't happen. But you were there and you saw it and you know. Sorry about making it this long. Sometimes I feel compelled to express my opinion thoroughly and your argument truly interested me. PS I might have used an incorrect word somewhere, I'm not a native speaker.

Actually, I read that differently. As a team leader I have sometimes 'bent the truth' in order to encourage people in my charge to think more positively about what they are doing or how they feel and so work more happily and productively. I would call that a form of 'Social Intelligence'. Sociopaths are destructive to social bonds within groups (I've worked with them) and I am definitely NOT one. :)

I know that I am far from genius, a terrible speller and my grammar isn't anything to "write home about" either. I do however make a concerted effort to check my grammar and spelling (thank you spell check) to the best of my ability, so that when people do read my comments, they are at least somewhat comprehensible. After all I believe your thoughts are predominantly a reflection of all you are, and if you are to be understood by others, one should at least attempt to effectively convey those thoughts.

I do agree that this might sound offensive to religious people, that believing in God makes you not smart. What I think what makes non-religious people a few points smarter than other people is the sense of using the brain. Many Religions tell their followers that everything they need to know is found in their religion, in their books or in their tenets. This makes these people's minds think that they already have the answers and that they don't need to question anything or to learn more, everything is already here according to the religions. Whereas trying to find the answers yourself challenges your brain and gets it more active thus making it grow more and increase in IQ. However, this doesn't correlate with people believing in God makes them stupid. Cause there are people out there that are Agnostics, people that say you can't prove or disprove the existence of God, like Neil Degrasse Tyson. I think the matter whether or not God exists is depended upon the definition of God, which Google says "the creator and ruler of the universe and source of all moral authority; the supreme being." I think this is where the people separate themselves from religion. Religions describe God to us as a human-like, male being that sits in the clouds in another realm called heaven that has these pearly gates. I think this is where people are like "Whoa Whoa, just stop". I asked a Christian pastor why are the parts in the Bible so mixed up and he told me that cause the Bible is actually many books and not just one and these books have been written over a period of 2000 years before christ and about 400 years after christ, so the Bible is actually many books and not just one. This made me curious about other books written at that time and it made me realize why so many religions share many common themes cause they share some of the same books. Then there was the Dead Sea scrolls that were discovered that had parts that weren't included into the religious books, so I realized that these religious books were incomplete and that I had to read them all to find out the answer. So I started to study, philosophy, religion and science all together for 10 years until I came with this conclusion: All in the universe is one and every one contained the universe in them. Everything is energy, is intelligent and is magical. God is not some white bearded dude that lives up in the clouds of heaven with the pearly gates and only gives salvation to only a particular religion. God is energy, everything is energy and thus everything is God. That's how God can do anything and see everything. That's one of the things that stumped me was if "God created the universe then what created God in the first place" and pastors would tell me God created himself. It sounded weird at first and then I realized if God was the Universe then God created himself and the Universe cause God is both. God is everything and everything is God, there is no difference. The power of the universe with in us Literally. God is just a name we gave to ourselves and the universe we are apart of. Why does Jedi say "May the Force be with you", cause the Force is another name for the universe and those that live in it, its another name for God. Buddists speak of "chi", which flows through the universe (like the Force), which translate to "breath" and the Bible speaks of the breath of God. Coincidence, I think not. And it even says so in science, If you learn about quantum physics they talk about super-position a state in which a particle and be in multiple places at once and that every particle in existence is actually the same particle spread out across universe, that's science proving what many pagan and other religious practices have been saying, the unification of the universe. And when you think of multiple dimensions, time and parallel universes this just adds on infinitely. And this is the God that I believe the ancients were trying to tell us and we just screwed it all up, not a male being who sits up in the clouds messing around with humanity. No God is the universal collective that we are all apart of. We are God, We can Forgive, but We'll Never Forget. Oh and just to mention, I'm a Atheist :D

Have trouble sleeping makes you probably a genius because geniuses have overly active brains and this can keep you up when you're sleeping. Heck there are some geniuses that can't even do simple tasks like wipe their selves after going to the bathroom and need someone else to help them do it. I guess its sort of a balance, increase intelligence but decrease in knowing how to do basic things.

I hate sleeping, sleeping just takes up time for doing/experiencing things. I often go to bed at 7 or 8am and sleep for 5 or 6 hours. About once a week I simply won't go to sleep to try and reset my schedule but it often doesn't work. I wish I didn't need to sleep. I show all these signs except positivity (I guess it depends, people I meet say I'm positive but inside I'm depressed and pessimistic) and left handedness (although I do own a left hand). I've been called a genius by people I've come to know over the years but why does it really matter when I can't concentrate on any one thing long enough to be successful at it?

Other than the incredibly harsh bullying that i expirienced for well.. all the years of school (In Denmark we just have school and then university and such, no such thing as highschool and other fiddly thingies) my positivity started failing me during my 7th and 8th year of bullying (mostly because more aggresive and harsher people joined my class) and at the 9th i basically snapped.. now im on my 10th year of school in 9th grade (again) on a new school.. parents are really pushing for a 10th grade (optional extra) on the new school aswell... even tho being in school for another damn year is the last thing i want to do... but it's either that or going out and working so yea..
