Thank you so much for publishing this!! This was beyond informative and really gave me some good ideas about how to continue down this path. My main interest is high school athletes who are injured and going through the rehabilitation process and physical therapy. Backstory was that I had to quit sports after high school due to a shoulder injury, and I wish I had had someone to counsel me and mentally heal from my injury, so I want to do that for others. I will be graduating with my B.S. in Psychology at the end of the month and will be continuing to intern and work with Select Therapy under the supervision and counsel of the mental health practitioners at Health Partners. I am looking forward to continue to work towards solidifying my potential career in sport psychology and helping athletes to grow and become more confident.

Thank you, Dr. Spencer for this video. I am currently finishing my MS in mental health counseling and am working within a hospital setting for my internship. During my journey through graduate school I have found out that I have a holistic perspective to counseling. I believe fully in the mind and body working as one. This is why I have also found so much interest in health/ performance psych. I started to notice this interest come out in some of my papers, which were honestly the most fun that i've had writing. The area that I started focusing on is endurance athletes, specifically I wrote about the female athlete triad. As I enter into my last semester I am starting to think about the next steps I would like to take and I believe that working with an athlete population is part of this path. Again I want to thank you for taking the time to make this video, it has given me a lot to think about.

This was a great resource and help! Thank you so much! I am about a year and a half away from finishing my bachelors and the next steps seem to be the most vital in the process. Your words definitely helped clarify some things for me. I will be joining the sports psychology world and maybe we will cross paths one day. Thanks again!

Awesome video! I began to consider whether to pursue an education in sports psychology after watching the Talking Out Loud podcast. The hosts of the show are both Performance Consultants and I loved the topics of the field but I wasn't sure what it would actually be like to work as a Sport Psychologist. This video is a great introduction into what to expect! Thanks for sharing!

My name is Ella and I am only a freshman in high school. But I am wanting to do something involving helping athletes improve their mental health to improve their performance. I have always wanted to go to Indiana University of Bloomington (go Hoosiers) and I am very interested in how your mindset affects your athletic ability, and vise versa. I would love to learn more about this career, to see if it is right for me. I am a competitive swimmer, and there was a time where my nerves and self doubt affected my performance. I learned how to cope with that and change my mindset through the help of my coach. I am just wondering what I can do now to work with swimmers. Psychology is offered at my high school, and I don’t know what to do. I have looked at Indiana and they do have a class that is all about sports psychology. I know they have BS and BA in psychology, and as far as I know BS is described as going into researching in psychology where as BA is going into specializing in your field of interest. I am completely new to everything and am very confused. The video was very helpful, although I am wondering what I should do in my particular situation. Do you have an email address where I could ask more specific questions about my passions?

Exact same boat as you! I totally want to continue working with swimmers in the world of swimming, maybe working as a personal trainer during the day and a coach during the evenings. But I want to get a degree in Sports Psychology before I pursue anything else. Have you got any answers or tips as of yet?

Sad Sade not really... i’ll have to keep searching. i tried to email a psychologist in my area to see if they could help but they said that they can’t since they aren’t necessarily a sports psychologist. but my school uses a website called career cruising where you are able to talk to people in the field, i haven’t tried that yet but i know that that is an option! i hope this helped a little bit... haha sorry i’m not that much help because i’m pretty clueless at the moment! :)

I heard you talk about doing psychobiology. Does that field go into things like why the body may be more tense during stress, or more focused when relaxed? If that makes sense? I played basketball in highschool and I noticed the more comfortable I was the better I played. the more anxious I became or let’s say forceful; I would play worse. Being comfortable the game seemed to flow more and I just reacted. When I was forceful or uncomfortable the game seemed impossible. In your opinion if I wanted to go into the research or something like this should I go the path I’m on right now and major in psychology or psychobiology? I would appreciate your feed back, thanks!

I am currently getting a BS in Cognitive Science and hope to somehow get involves at the Human and Athletic Performance Research center that is being built at my university. I’ve been looking at masters programs and I’ve found one called Sport and Performance Psychology. I would hope yo get this masters and then a PhD. Would this be a correct route?

Thanks for the info! I have a few questions. Currently in a PsyD program in clinical psychology. The program does not have a sports psychology track. It does have a health psychology track, however. Would you recommend I take this track? Would practicums in health psychology qualify me for sports psych internships? Finally, whether I land an internship in sports psych or not, would you recommend I get a masters in sports psych after I get my PsyD? Thanks in advance!
@jarrodspencer194
@jarrodspencer194 2 жыл бұрын
For sure....go the health psychology track as it will help you in your future career as a sports psychologist. You will be a strong candidate for sports psych internships or just get one in health psych and then go into sports psychology afterwards. I do not believe a masters after that will be necessary; just do a lot of continuing education in sports psych. Good luck!

Great video and I will be purchasing your book! I have recently received my BA in psychology and my goal is to consult for football athletes, ideally at the collegiate and professional level, however I am also open to the high school level. I am considering getting an MS in psychology with a concentration in sport psychology or MA in Performance Psychology. Ultimately I want to work at the team and individual level with athletes in football to improve and retain their confidence. Is this path appropriate and what other valuable steps should I take to ensure my success. Should I consider an LPC or an internship? Is a Masters enough or is a phd absolutely necessary? I would really appreciate your feedback! Nate

I'm glad that this video was of help to you. I do encourage you to get an Master's Degree that leads to licensure and do lots of your research and an internship on sports, particularly football. Many doors will be open to you.

Awesome! Would a MA in Applied Psychology open up opportunities to become a Sport Psychology Consultant with an LPC? @@MindOfTheAthlete
@MindOfTheAthlete
@MindOfTheAthlete 6 жыл бұрын
@@XxAssumedNattxX -- only a master's program that specifically states that it's course work and training culminates in the ability to sit for the LPC license exam would lead to the path you desire w/ having a license. Ideally, such a program with a sports psychology focus too would be optimal. Good luck!

I’m trying to figure out pursuit sport psych or PT I love the idea of both Would it be realistic to be both? Which one has an average high salary as personal experience I value finance highly
@MindOfTheAthlete
@MindOfTheAthlete 3 жыл бұрын
You can do both....it would just be a very long educational path that may not bring the financial benefits worth the journey. Both paths will bring you a good salary but I believe psychology could potentially lead to more free lance consulting opportunities that may yield a higher income. Hope this helps.

Dear Dr. Jarrod Spencer, I want to become a sports psychologist mainly for NBA players (obviously also for other leagues). I basically want to personally work with athletes, helping them with performing at their highest possible level. Right now I am doing my Bachelor in Psychology in the Netherlands. I am planning to do my Master in Sports Psychology, if possible, in the USA, otherwise somewhere else. Would you recommend that? I thought the sooner I specialize the better. According to you I then also need a license. Does this path make sense for my goal? Should I do a Ph D.? I mean to be one of the best the answer is probably yes. I just do not know where to get the money. And how do you get that license? I would be very grateful if you could help me with this! Kind regards Arian
@MindOfTheAthlete
@MindOfTheAthlete 6 жыл бұрын
For professional sports, a license is not as preferred (as of now) as it is in the NCAA. But I think it is wise to get a Ph.D. in clinical psychology with a focus on health/performance/sports. Hope this helps.

Very helpful! And do you think it is ok if I do my Masters and Ph. D. in Europe? I might be able to do a semester abroad (USA). Or is studying in the US worth borrowing money?

I am not sure if it'll be worth it or not; that would be a financial decision that you alone would have to determine. Good luck!
