When I visited the amazon link for these pencils I read some of the reviews and noticed that someone had a good solution to deal with the issue of the color indicator not being true to life... she colored a narrow strip of paper with the pencil making the values go from light to dark. Then she cut, wound, and taped the strip around the end around the pencil itself. Thought that was clever! I'll do that with my inktense too. Thanks for the video. It still holds up these years later. Joy to you!

I have to tell you the breakthrough I have had from watching this video. I am am comfortable drawing anything with graphite pencils but have been struggling with wc pencil, graphitint and watersoluble graphite, never being please with anything I have created. When I saw how you applied the graphitint and then used the dry brush technique to activate as you applied the colour, the penny dropped. Suddenly a double door opened and I knew what to do. I have been using far too much water and I have been applying the water to activate after all the drawing/color is finished. Your approach makes so much sense. I am so excited. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Marjolein Vanderhoeven Happy 2015 too you also. Glad you enjoy the graphitints. I absolutely LOVE them! I've had a few requests to review the Inktense pencils, so its something I will definitely put on my list to do. Up to now, I've shied away from combining permanent ink with watercolor as a more advance technique for my audience, BUT, I have to admit the possibilities are intriguing. Its still a water-based media and some sort of multimedia approach would be fun to try.

Wonderful tutorial and review, I subscribed :). I was going to ask about some of the supplies you used, but after reading through the comments, I found that you have answered most of them already, but I was wondering if you had a method to seal a drawing and help preserve the colors (light fast)? do you think a coat of workable fixative could do so, or would it harm the color? Also, I see something in your drawing that no one else has commented, so maybe it's just me but, in your background shading, where you have the kind of burgundy and the burnt umber blend, it almost looks like the outline of a laughing child! So I see the piece in my head now almost like a grandfather recalling a grandchild. (Paused at 9:13 is a good shot if anyone else is trying to see it)
@mindofwatercolor8 жыл бұрын
+Shell Sto If my art materials are lightfast I don't worry about sealing. I never seal watercolor especially, but these pencils do have some lightfast issues. If I were going to frame them I might seal them with Krylon UV archival spray. More likely I would just use UV glass. Spray can definitely change color. Usually darkens it. So you always want to spray a test piece first.

@loungejay85553 жыл бұрын
Watercolouring over a pencil drawing, if done well, makes for a nice effect; depending on the subject matter I prefer it to ink and watercolour. If it's a portrait or a figurative drawing I'll use pencil, and if it's a more cartoonish style drawing I use ink.

But how do you get your pencils so sharp? mine break all the time, what am i doing wrong?
@mypandapaints58549 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve. I was wondering if you should put an annotation over the video letting people know that these are not lightfast at all. Some colors disappear completely within 2 months. It is great for journaling though as it won't be exposed to the sun. I love the use of these pencils and have always wanted them but the lack of lightfastness have always made me hesitant to buy especially since money is tight. Handprint.com? Has some great swatches and lightfast tests where the colors almost completely disappear leaving only the graphite sometimes within one month!!
@mindofwatercolor9 жыл бұрын
+My Panda Paints Only 5 of the 24 colors are not considered lightfast. Still better odds than the notorious Copic marker. I can't believe the quantity of "finished" framable art being created by artists with Copics. No pigment whatsoever. But you are correct, Graphitints are probably a better sketching and journaling tool which I think I mentioned in the video.
@mypandapaints58549 жыл бұрын
+The Mind of Watercolor Yea but the problem that people seem to have run into is the difference of what SHOULD be lightfast vs the actual lightfastness of the colors. I think Derwent says 5 are not lightfast but in real world lightfastness tests, less than a handful came back as not shifting in color or completely disappearing? That's why I left the comment. Especially since about half of the line apparently loses all color (no ability to distinguish what color was used) within a month in direct sunlight. But yea. KZbin is notorious for bringing about self-taught artists who don't realize that dye-based materials are for reproductions of graphic arts. Not meant to be used as a final product in itself. Once I get myself on my two feet, I'm probably going to be starting a KZbin channel starting with the Myths from Internet, such as "It's ok to sell art made with student grade/academic materials! No one can dictate to you what you need to use to make (sellable) art!"
@mypandapaints58549 жыл бұрын

Can you give some tips on how to transfer a sketch/drawing onto watercolor paper..... ? That seems to be my challenge at the moment....
@mindofwatercolor10 жыл бұрын
I thought about doing a video on that actually. You can use graphite paper under your drawing and trace back over the lines to transfer it. You can also scribble pencil on the back of your drawing and it works just like graphite paper. If you're using 140lb paper or lighter (thin enough to see through it) you can trace on a light box with your drawing beneath the WC paper. A glass patio door makes a decent light box in a pinch.

Loved it, thank you! Btw, i bought a book on amazon, "Draw Faces in 15 minutes" by Jake Spicer, and i just made my first two (in my mind) successfull portraits ever this weekend, and would like to make one with color. Wanted to ask you, i have watercolor pencils, but never really understood how "mixing" colors with them would work, as in all the different tonal values on the face. In this video, did you just overlap the red and brown before you activated them, or one at a time?
@mindofwatercolor7 жыл бұрын
Yes, overlap and layering is probably the most common way of mixing watercolor pencils.

Reading with interest re the fugitiveness of these pencils....and having looked into them myself a bit....there are many who have had issues with them :( A go-to place for me on reviewing products Wet Canvas.com, and other watercolor blogs has made me leary of getting them. I read that you have had no issues The Mind of Watercolor and I was wondering if you protected your work with a UV spray or??? And was that before you sold it as I did see you had sold it (and no wonder... your art is awesome!). I just do not want to put bucks into them if they are fugitive (and they aren't cheap!) I love how they look!! But being realistic, art supplies aren't cheap lol.
@mindofwatercolor8 жыл бұрын
I do not use UV spray unless a piece is being framed and hung. Then I will also use UV glass. Be careful of the forum reviews. I've found that many people just repeat what they've heard without telling you thats what they're doing. There are very few people that actually go to the trouble of testing stuff or have first hand fugitive issues. I'm sure these pencils aren't as permanent at high quality paints but so far I personally can't attest to problems. One peculiarity about them is they dry to a faded, dusty appearance. Thats only because they are part graphite. I think some people have gotten confused with this aspect thinking the color is fading. All that said I never actually recommended using these as anything but sketching pencils. Great for that purpose I think.
