I enjoyed this video but I was waiting for the crescendo! That moment when you were going to do what no watercolor artist is able to do…adding a lighter color on top of the darks. I was hoping you would add some yellow or white to a dark area so that we could see if it stayed light or just blended in because of the water on the paper. I would love to see some more videos using this product. Making a waterfall, painting highlights on a rock, or doing a portrait and blending flesh tones would be great.

I alternate between using watercolor/gouache and water mixable oils. I started watching your channel for water color techniques and started using them with the oils. These techniques also work well on various painting panels. I’ve found some colors that will separate in beautiful ways when used in a wash, and even granulate. It is well worth playing with these paints.

Steve, I love this! I started out my painting journey using oils and some acrylics. But mostly oils. I gravitated to Layne Johnson and Chuck Black to watch their techniques. I then found your channel and switched to watercolour because I wanted something easier to clean up with no harsh chemicals. Then I was gifted some Cobra WS oils and I love them! I've been eyeing the Holbein Duo Aqua. I have used the Arches Oil paper, but don't like it. I use it for practice now. I will continue to use both mediums, so I would love to see some occasional WS oil videos. Thank you, Steve. I really enjoy your channel and I'm very appreciative of your teachings! Blessings to you and your family.

I’m so glad you did this! I’m primarily an acrylic painter which makes it hard for me to use watercolor (used to painting light over dark as opposed to dark over light) and I struggle with oils because of the drying time. I am definitely going to try this with my water mixable oils! Thanks!

Please do more. I think the spontaneous water part of it worked great. But then to be able to oil paint highlights, etc. is quite an advantage. I think mounting the Arches paper to a panel would really provide an oil experience. I just unsure about the oil drying on paper. But i guess Arches solved that. Loved it.

More! yes please! ive been wanting to try these for awhile, and I dont really like the color shift and mixing of gouache, but watching you with these, i feel like I may like the water soluble oils better! Wow! Good to know Steve! I was in Hobby Lobby last year and they were getting rid of their Winsor Newton water soluble oils and bringing in their brand of oils. I was able to purchase 15ml. tubes of Winsor Newton water solvable oils for around a dollar or two apiece! So I bought every tube they had!😃 Haven’t used them yet however.( I am mainly a water colorist) You inspired me to try this! I love watercolor too but would also love to see more videos using water soluble oils too! So good to have you back! God Bless!

I use water mixable oils a lot but I have never used them quite like this with getting the surface almost completely wet first. Thats really cool. I have used them transparently for under paintings using water because I started using them without the other mediums. I use the mediums now because I have them and because of the mixed info about using water as a medium. I do enjoy the water soluble oils and want to try what you have done here. 😊

I've never tried the water color oils. I'm impressed with having more drying time, and flexibility in going back with a watercolor sky, and it's more forgiving when you do retouch. Will check it out for sure, thank you for the introduction and practice. Perhaps in time these will be the new way to paint with oils, and we will scorn the old days when people painted with that awful toxic solvent! Reason I went to watercolors, however keep in mind there are some watercolor brands that are toxic. Check the labels. Blessings from BC Canada. ☺ ☺

20:37 It is very interesting to see more oil paintings in the style of watercolours. I’ve always been intrigued by that (and whether oil paints granulate), but it was never strong enough to the point of wanting to try water-mixable oil painting. Art supplies are expensive and I much prefer to stick with watercolours. Besides, if I ever want to try to paint in the style of oil paints, I could always try gouache.

Glad you and your family didn't get the worst of the storm. The water soluble oils are pretty interesting. I've heard about them and just couldn't wrap my head around how exactly that works. Not convinced for myself that I'd gravitate to using it. The color looks muddy, even in the spots where you can see it's closer to the pure pigment than others where you'd mixed the colors (ie that phthalo down at the very bottom of your painting.) Thanks for demoing it for us!

It looks to be a fascinating medium to explore, though it doesn't have that magical luminosity we all love so much in watercolour. It just looks 'flatter' somehow.
