It's perspective honestly. I've played soccer nearly my whole life, from AYSO, Club, Fresh, JV, Varsity and a few years in College. Still round up my friends today for a game we play once a month or so. I personally view the Goalkeeper to be one of the most essential pieces to a well built team, where as others might view other positions to be more valuable or all positions of equal value. Would I agree to the Goalie makes half the team? Yes, I would. A good Goalie knows their job is not simply just prevent the ball from entering their own goal, they should also be scanning the field, watching their teammates and the enemy team. The Goalie wants to observe, see how the flow of the game is going, where are there openings, where are we struggling, how should we restructure, etc. Every time I was Captain of my teams, I would always have a Goalie as a Vice Captain. I needed someone who was vocal and loud, someone who you can hear from one end of the field to the other, someone that if for one reason or another was taken out of their role for a game, other team members would be intimidated by filling the role to be such a supporting character, though of course I would always have a backup in the event I lost my Goalie. So yes, I would argue that Goalies are definitely one of the most important key figures on a Soccer field.
