Mine Falls and Greeley Park | Nashua, NH

Although Nashua boasts nearly two dozen parks,
Mine Falls Park is one of the most instantly recognizable and vital parts of the city of Nashua. The park is located in the heart of the city. With 325-acres, Mine Falls includes forests, wetlands, and open fields; it is bordered on the north by the Nashua River and on the south by the Millpond and canal system. Even though it’s in the heart of the city, it remains amazingly peaceful and scenic.
Residents and visitors enjoy numerous passive recreation opportunities such as walking, boating, fishing, cross-country skiing, and biking. The park also includes several fields for organized sports, The Nashua Canal Trail features 6 miles of trails winding along the canal and river.
The name "Mine Falls" derives from the 1700s, when low quality lead was supposedly mined from the island below the falls. In the early 1800s the potential of the Nashua River to drive the wheels of industry was recognized. Workers used shovels and mules to dig the three-mile long canal, which provides a vertical drop of 36 feet at the mills.
The Gatehouse near the falls was built in 1886 - with the first gates being built in 1826 - and it still brings the river to the Millpond.
In 1987 the Nashua River Canal was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1992 the park trails were designated part of the New Hampshire Heritage Trail system, which extends 130 miles along the Merrimack River from Massachusetts to Canada.
Greeley Park occupies 125 acres adjacent to Nashua’s historic and picturesque North End. In addition to the forests and fields, the park offers residents a number amenities, including a wading pool, softball field, playground, tennis courts, trails, picnic areas, and winter sledding. Greeley Park hosts many citywide events such as the Fairy Tale Festival and a Halloween "Fright Night”.
For more than 60 years, The Nashua Area Artists’ Association has hosted a two day summer art show with dozens of New England painters, photographers, jewelry makers and other artists and performers. Thousands of visitors come to this landmark downtown park, which also boasts two art competitions - one for adults, and the other for ages 6-18. It’s the perfect opportunity to mingle with fellow artists and art lovers, experience local art, support local artists, and to enjoy good, old fashioned fun!
During the spring and summer at the bandshell there are plays, movies and concerts - even Shakespeare in the Park, which has been held every summer for nearly 2 decades.
You never know what you may run into, such as the quirky Ukulele Picnic, where hundreds of Ukulele fans present a 6 hour event with players from all over New England. The park also features hiking trails, ball fields, tennis courts, and a community gardening section. Greeley Park is also home to the Gate City Clangers Horseshoe Club, with 24 lighted clay courts available.
Greeley Park is an enjoyable city retreat.
